Materials Safety Considerations

● Computer with internet access ● When creating a scratch account, ensure you are doing so with parental approval and supervision.

Key Words & Concepts This lesson builds off of the previous lessons from Comics, Cartoons, and Coding.. Please review those lessons and it’s concepts for further context.

Scratch: a free block-based visual computer programming language and website. Users can create online projects using the block-like interface. Here are some common features of a Scratch program: ● Sprites: objects in our scene. They can be characters or props. Each sprite has its own script. ● Blocks: they control what the sprites and the backdrop do. They are used to code the behaviour of our characters. They can be attached together to make a list of instructions for a sprite to follow. ● Script: a list of instructions written using the blocks

Some of the categories of Blocks: ● : blocks that control the movement of the sprite ● Looks: blocks that control what costume your sprite is wearing, whether the sprite is visible, and the size of your sprite ● Events: These must start every piece of code in order for it to run. ● Control: these help your sprite wait or repeat pieces of code Scratch Publishing Account Creation To share a project to the public on Scratch, you will first need to create an account. Visit https://scratch.mit.edu/ and select Join Scratch.

Follow the steps to create your account and finish this process by confirming your email address (necessary for publishing your projects). After you have confirmed you account’s email, head to your project and select share. Fill in all necessary information sections to add the finishing touches to your project.

Privacy When Publishing to Scratch Do not include any identifying information about yourself in your project. Keep your privacy safe! Before sharing your Scratch project, make sure it doesn’t include: ● Your full name ● Where you live ● Your birthday ● Any other private information ● Scratch has a great function where you can “remix” other’s work and make your own version of their project. This means you can make a copy of the project and edit the code. Remember to be respectful when creating a new version of other people's’ work. Additional Resources
