Supporting candidates learning from home to prepare for computer-based practical tests Supporting candidates learning from home to prepare for the practical tests in Cambridge IGCSE ICT (0417), Cambridge IGCSE (9–1) ICT (0983) and Cambridge International A Level IT (9626) We understand that many centres and candidates are facing challenging times, and that some centres are having to teach practical IT skills remotely. Practical IT skills are a vital part of our IT syllabuses. We assess these skills through formal tests under controlled conditions. To maintain the integrity of the tests, and the value of our qualifications for students, we encourage centres to teach the full syllabus content, whether remotely or face to face. There are currently no adaptations to the practical skills requirements for March or June 2021. However, we understand that candidates do not always have access to proprietary (non-free) software that is licensed through their centre. This may be a significant barrier to candidates practising practical IT skills at home. The Uses of Animation 1 1 The Uses of Animation ANIMATION Animation is the process of making the illusion of motion and change by means of the rapid display of a sequence of static images that minimally differ from each other. The illusion—as in motion pictures in general—is thought to rely on the phi phenomenon. Animators are artists who specialize in the creation of animation. Animation can be recorded with either analogue media, a flip book, motion picture film, video tape,digital media, including formats with animated GIF, Flash animation and digital video. To display animation, a digital camera, computer, or projector are used along with new technologies that are produced. Animation creation methods include the traditional animation creation method and those involving stop motion animation of two and three-dimensional objects, paper cutouts, puppets and clay figures. Images are displayed in a rapid succession, usually 24, 25, 30, or 60 frames per second. THE MOST COMMON USES OF ANIMATION Cartoons The most common use of animation, and perhaps the origin of it, is cartoons. Most of the educational organizations have already adopted smart learning environment by upgrading their infrastructure and with proper capacity building among staff members. But in the education sector, sustainability of technology is always being a challenge. To develop learning materials, many institutions have already started using free and open source software (FOSS) tools. FOSS gives freedom to the developer with the provision of various customization options as per the requirements of the class or subject. Moreover, in the longer run, free and open source software could be considered as the best option in education for e-learning implementation, for sustainability. There are many tools which are available for e-learning resource development. Some of them are available online and some are available as an installer for the various platform. In order to adapt ICT in education, especially in non-IT specialization, the faculty members need the training to learn and implement these tools in their classes. -

Updates and related discussions are posted at: http://exploringtech.wordpress.com/ Why should we use technology for PD, TA, and Dissemination? • In particular, technology can help us to efficiently, effectively, and creatively: 1. Create content; 2. Share knowledge; and 3. Build and support relationships. We should consider ALL applications that are available to us. This includes applications that are expensive, moderately priced, inexpensive (shareware), and free (freeware). This includes software that we download to our computers and software that runs on the web. Some expensive applications enable us to us to communicate in very unique and effective ways, while the functions of other expensive applications can be easily replicated, or even improved upon, by the use of freeware. Likewise, some free applications are all we need to get the job done, while other free applications have significant limitations or involve the use of paid advertisements that detract from our purposes. I use some relatively expensive applications for tasks such as video editing and authoring online learning modules. But I also use many free applications for things such as document sharing, web conferencing, video conferencing, media transcoding, audio editing, screen capturing, media posting, and building and hosting wikis, blogs, and web sites. Why, in particular, should we explore free applications? • Sometimes, free applications are all that we need. Why purchase or license expensive software when there are free solutions? • The budgets in PD and TA programs are being dramatically reduced. -
