Famous Portuguese People No âmbito do projeto “We are Europe”, os alunos do clube “Ludoletras”, em conjunto com os alunos do 5ºC e 5ºD, dão a conhecer à Europa um pouco de Portugal. Famous Portuguese people Selection made by the students of the “Ludoletras” club and classes 5C and 5D Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa He is the President of the Portuguese Republic since March 2016. He is the 20th president of the republic since its beginning, in 1910. D. Afonso Henriques Afonso I (25th July 1109 / 6th December 1185), also called Afonso Henriques, and known as “the conqueror”, was the first King of Portugal, from 1139 until his death. In 1140, after winning the battle of Ourique, Afonso clamed himself as King of Portugal. José Saramago José de Sousa Saramago was a very important Portuguese writer. He was born in Santarém, in 1922 and died in Lanzarote Island, in Spain, in 2010. Saramago won the Literature Nobel Prize in 1998. Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen Sophia was one of the most important poets in Portugal, but she has also written many lovely stories for children. At school we read many of these stories. She was born in 1919 and died in 2004. Alice Vieira She is one of the most famous Portuguese writers, but she has also worked as journalist and in many TV series for children. Her books are translated in many languages and she has won many prizes. She is now 73 years old. Mariza She is a singer. She sings “fado”, a traditional Portuguese music. He played in the Portuguese Football team and in Benfica. He is considered one of the best footballers of all times. Cristiano Ronaldo He was born on the 5th February 1985 in Madeira Island. He played in many teams, in Portugal and other countries: Sporting (Portugal), Manchester Football Club (England), Real Madrid (Spain) and others. He won the golden boot for four times and was considered the best player in the world for three times, the last one in 2014. José Mourinho He was born in 1963 . He is a very famous coach and in 2013 he was elected best European Coach. In 2015 he was coach of the year. The last team he represented was Chelsea Football Club, in England. Nelson Évora He is a Portuguese athlete, but he was born in Cape Verde, in 1984. He is a specialist at triple jump, but he also practices long jump. He represents Benfica, but he has already represented Portugal many times. He won the golden medal at the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008. Telma Monteiro She was born in 1985, in Portugal. She is a judoka and she has already won many world championships. She was at the Olympic Games in 2004, 2008 and 2012 and she is going to be at the Brazilian Olympic games in 2016 too. Telma Santos She is 33 years old and she is the national champion of Badminton. She has won 332 cups and more than 200 medals, in Portugal. She is also the European champion. She will be representing Portugal in the Olympic Games in Brazil..
