North Fork Mono Meadow Restoration, Fire, and Water: The Tribe’s Land and Water Rights and Tenure by Jared Dahl Aldern Just as fire is important in the Great Plains ecosystem (see the “Growing Prairie” activity at http://pbs.org/saf/1106/teaching/teaching.htm ), fire is a crucial component of the ecosystems throughout North Fork Mono homelands (see the map of North Fork Mono homelands). The dynamics of the forest ecosystem that gold miners, ranchers, and United States military officers, forest rangers, and scientists encountered in the central Sierra Nevada in the nineteenth century were the results of centuries of small, high-frequency fires propagated along a complex network of trails by Native American people. From the Native American perspective, these fires were gifts from the people to the land, and the intentional exclusion of fire since 1900 has reduced the gifts -- the food, medicine, and material or cultural resources -- that the land had offered for centuries in return for the people’s offerings. Prior to the arrival of Europeans, the use of fire by the North Fork Mono and other California Indian people enhanced plant and animal resources and sustained a higher human population density than intensive, seed-crop agriculture could have supported. Recent studies have suggested that Indian people in some areas of California might have once raised corn, but they subsequently abandoned the practice in favor of carefully designed cycles of burning the land (see Jared Aldern’s dissertation and the book by Kent Lightfoot and Otis Parrish listed in the resource section below). M. Kat Anderson (2009) interviewed Dan McSwain, a North Fork Mono elder who confirmed that his people‘s traditional practices included such thoughtfully arranged and timed cycles of fires. -

The Layers in Time archeology field trip introduces students to the people who once lived at Setting: Hospital Rock through the artifacts they left behind. Through Hospital Rock Picnic Area several different hands-on activities students will have an Sequoia National Park opportunity to discover and investigate Native American pictographs, stories, trade routes, economics, and culture. Duration: 3.5 hours Essential Question: What can we learn about Native American art and culture, and the tools and methods they used to survive in the Sierra Nevada foot- Standards Addressed: hills based upon the artifacts they left behind? Grade 3: Essential Understanding: Through the science of archaeology, we can study the artifacts left Social Science 3.1, 3.2, 3.4 behind by the Native Americans in order to gain a more complete Visual Arts: 2.1 understanding of how they lived, what they ate, their art, and their culture. But ethnographic, linguistic, and archaeological evidence also suggests widespread borrowing from California cultures and the development of complementary social and economic relationships with California groups. This indicates a negotiated and elastic, rather than an overtly competitive, process of territorial expansion. The Mono are an offshoot of the Nevada Indians, and should be properly classified with them, but they have been so long on the western slope of the Sierra, and acquired so many habits and usages, that they may be included here [i.e., in California]. Many years ago—it is impossible to ascertain how long ago—they came over from Owen’s River Valley, and conquered for themselves a territory on the upper reaches of the San Joaquin and King’s River [Powers 1877:397]. -

CSU, Chico is proud to host this event and we are pleased to welcome all participants to the conference, our campus, and our community. This event supports the promotion of excellence in collaborative, multidisciplinary, cutting-edge scholarship in Native American studies, anthropology, history, social and environmental sciences, and other disciplines. It is our hope that this conference will provide a positive atmosphere for discussion and collaboration.
