  • Aesthetically Driven Design of Network Based Multi-User Instruments
Aesthetically Driven Design of Network Based Multi-User Instruments by Curtis McKinney A thesis submitted to the faculty of Bournemouth University in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the School of Design, Engineering, and Computing July 2014 This copy of the thesis has been supplied on condition that anyone who consults it is understood to recognise that its copyright rests with its author and due acknowl- edgement must always be made of the use of any material contained in, or derived from, this thesis. I Aesthetically Driven Design of Network Based Multi-User Instruments Curtis McKinney Abstract Digital networking technologies open up a new world of possibilities for mu- sic making, allowing performers to collaborate in ways not possible before. Net- work based Multi-User Instruments (NMIs) are one novel method of musical collaboration that take advantage of networking technology. NMIs are digital musical instruments that exist as a single entity instantiated over several nodes in a network and are performed simultaneously by multiple musicians in real- time. This new avenue is exciting, but it begs the question of how does one design instruments for this new medium? This research explores the use of an aesthetically driven design process to guide the design, construction, rehearsal, and performance of a series of NMIs. This is an iterative process that makes use of a regularly rehearsing and performing ensemble which serves as a test-bed for new instruments, from conception, to design, to implementation, to performance. This research includes details of several NMIs constructed in accordance with this design process.

  • The Dwarvenhold Campaign Geography
The Dwarvenhold Campaign Geography Domain Name: Deep Root This is the region of the underdark in which you live. It includes areas of dwarf, drow and deep gnome control. A domain is the equivalent of an island. City-State: DwarvenHold DwarvenHold is the name of the city-state of the mountain dwarves. It includes mines, giant caverns with conventional buildings, and dwellings built along caverns that dig deep into the surrounding area. Dwarvenhold feeds itself on miles of cavern-corrals, caves used for fungus cultivation. There are also multiple lakes stocked with cave fish. Dwarvenhold is formed in concentric circles. The innermost circle, called the Great Hall, is a giant cavern with conventional buildings. The center of the Great Hall is The Courtyard, a vast cavern where the king holds his audience. A giant stalactite lies in the center of the cavern and reaches nearly to the ceiling, hundreds of feet above. The stalactite has been hollowed out and used as the seat of power for the city-state. Many younger dwarves live in the Courtyard, preferring its new style of dwarven architecture and constant activity. Many of these dwarves live in apartments carved into the cavern walls. The apartments extend nearly a hundred feet up from the surface. Concentric circles of caverns extend out from The Courtyard. Those with wealth and power tend to live in inner circles, while outer circles are used for mining, poorer housing and military outposts. The farther away from The Great Hall, the more dangerous it is. There are well established routes, considered roads within the kingdom, as well as private caverns and routes that are off limits to those who don't belong.

BLIZZARD ENTERTAINMENT, INC. v. JUNG 422 F.3d 630 (8th Cir. 2005) SMITH, Circuit Judge. Davidson & Associates, Inc. d/b/a Blizzard Entertainment ("Blizzard") and Vivendi Universal Games, Inc. ("Vivendi"), owner of copyrights in computer game software and online gaming ser- vice software sued Ross Combs ("Combs"), Rob Crittenden ("Crittenden"), Jim Jung ("Jung"), and Internet Gateway, Inc. ("Internet Gateway") (collectively referred to as "Appellants"), for breach of contract, circumvention of copyright protection system, and trafficking in circumvention technolo- gy. Both parties moved for summary judgment. The district court granted summary judgment in fa- vor of Blizzard and Vivendi, and determined that: (1) Blizzard's software end-user license and terms of usage agreements were enforceable contracts; (2) Appellants waived any "fair use" defense; (3) the agreements did not constitute misuse of copyright; and (4) Appellants violated the anti- circumvention and anti-trafficking provisions of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act ("DMCA"). We affirm. [*633] I. Background A. Factual Background Blizzard, a California corporation and subsidiary of Vivendi, creates and sells software games for personal computers. This appeal concerns the particular Blizzard games "StarCraft," "StarCraft: Brood War," "WarCraft II: Battle.net Edition," "Diablo," and "Diablo II: Lord of Destruction." Combs and Crittenden are computer programmers, Jung is a systems administrator, and Internet Gateway is an Internet service provider based in St. Peters, Missouri. Jung is also the president, co- owner, and day-to-day operator of Internet Gateway. In January 1997, Blizzard officially launched "Battle.net," a 24-hour online-gaming service available exclusively to purchasers of its computer games. ELEGY by Christie Golden © 2018 Blizzard Entertainment, Inc. By the moons’ glow, listen. Beside the river, listen. Holding those you love, listen: To the cries of the dying, To the whisper of the wind over the silent dead, To the song my broken heart will ever sing Of the story of the Tree of the World And the death of all the dreams It once cradled in its mighty boughs. 1 PART ONE: IN THE IVORY TOWER In purity, all things are born. The eldest tree was once a tender sapling, And even the stars were young. O Lady Elune, Weep tears so sweet At the thought of the innocence That once was ours. Clang! The martial music of swordplay rang out as the two blades clashed. The combatants sprang apart, circling. The older man, hair and beard as white as moonlight, feinted, then brought his weapon arcing up and around. But the younger man was quick and deftly blocked the blow. Sparks flew, and the colliding blades glinted in the sunlight. “Nicely done,” Genn Greymane grunted even as he lunged. Again, the youth parried. “But one of these days, you’ll have to go on the—” Greymane barely got his sword up in time to prevent King Anduin Wrynn’s blow. “Offensive?” Anduin grinned. He bore down with the weapon, feeling the older man’s blade straining against it. His sun-colored hair had come loose and was falling into his eyes, and he grimaced as he realized Greymane had noticed. The Gilnean king abruptly pulled back. Caught off balance, Anduin stumbled forward.

  • Sociality and Materiality in World of Warcraft Nicholas Anthony Gadsby
Sociality and Materiality in World of Warcraft Nicholas Anthony Gadsby University College London Department of Anthropology A thesis re-submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy May 2016 1 Declaration I, Nicholas Anthony Gadsby, confirm that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Where information has been derived from other sources, I conform this has been indicated in the thesis. 2 Abstract The focus of my thesis is the role and status of control in the MMO World of Warcraft where one of the primary motivations for player engagement was to eliminate and marginalise contingency at sites across the game that were perceived to be prone to the negative effects of contingency, a process that its developers were to a significant degree complicit in. My field sites traced the activities and lives of gamers across the physical location of London and the south east of the United Kingdom and their online game locations that constituted World of Warcraft and occasionally other online games which included the guild they were a member of that was called ‘Helkpo’. It examines how the transparency attributed to the game’s code, its ‘architectural rules’, framed the unpredictability of players as problematic and how codified ‘social rules’ attempted to correct this shortcoming. In my thesis I dive into the lives of the members of Helkpo as both guild members and as part of the expansive network that constituted their social lives in London. It demonstrates how the indeterminate nature of information in the relations in their social network contrasted with the modes of accountability that World of Warcraft offered, defined by different forms of information termed ‘knowing’ and ‘knowledge’.
