This collection documents the guidance systems work for NASA's lunar program that took place at Delco Systems Operations of Goleta, California, during the 1960s and 1970s. A portion of the collection is located at the Southern Regional Library Facility (SRLF). Access Restrictions The collection is open for research. A portion of the collection is stored offsite. Advance notice is required for retrieval. Use Restrictions Copyright has not been assigned to the Department of Special Research Collections, UCSB. Scope and Content The collection contains materials related to Delco Systems Operations of Goleta, California, AC Spark Plug, and GM, gathered by Delco Retirees Group members. In 1962, GM created the General Motors Research Laboratories, based in Santa Barbara, California, to conduct research and development activities on defense systems. GM Motors Research Laboratories merged into Delco Electronics and was renamed Delco Systems Operations. The company was involved in developing early missile guidance systems during the Cold War, guidance systems for NASA's Apollo lunar program, and systems engineering for the Apollo (LRV). Many of the items in this collection were generated from this activity. The collection includes organizational charts, brochures, corporate publications, Apollo guidance packets, miscellaneous Apollo documents, oral histories, photographs, artifacts, film, video, and ephemera. Arrangement The collection has been divided into three series: Series 1. Delco, Series 2. AC Spark Plug, and Series 3. General Motors (GM); Series 4. 2019 Accession Separated Material 40 issues of the General Motors Engineering Journal (from, roughly, 1953 to 1966), as well as other published materials, have been separated for cataloging and are accessible through the UC Santa Barbara Library online catalog.
