So called for the use of stone as the main building material together with wood and straw, Villa Petra is a superb example of craftsmanship and restorative architecture, successfully preserving the villa's distinctive rural identity. The accommodation is arranged around the ancient courtyard, which connects the main villa and the charming one-bedroomed cottage complete with an airy art studio and a lovely rooftop sun-terrace. Surrounded by a dry-stone dwarf-wall and olive groves, the pool is particularly suitable for children and is the ideal spot in which one can keep cool and refreshed during the hottest hours of the day. When you tire of the tranquillity of the villa's rural surroundings, head to the beautiful and wealthy town of Ragusa Ibla (= meaning old town), just ten miles away. Used as the setting of the popular Inspector Montalbano’s TV series, this spectacular Baroque town was re-built at the beginning of the 18th century like nearby Vittoria, Scicli and Modica. These towns have a unique atmosphere which can only be found in this part of Sicily; the dramatic views, decorated buildings and steep winding lanes lined with a wealth of elegant shops and restaurants. The coast is also remarkable in this area, mostly featuring sandy beaches as opposed to the cliffs and rocky bays typical of the northern coast. La ricerca vuole offrire spunti di riflessione su un’ area della Sicilia dalla storia antica: la Contea di Modica. Una storia, quella della Contea, che affonda le proprie radici indietro nel tempo, scandita da diverse dominazioni che hanno lasciato i “segni” impressi sul territorio, interessato da nefasti eventi naturali che hanno determinato via via l’assetto urbanistico, politico, economico e sociale. Per meglio comprendere le caratteristiche dei centri, che un tempo fecero parte della gloriosa Contea, si è cercato di cogliere gli aspetti percettivi anche attraverso la cartografia storica, che contribuisce a dare il “senso dei luoghi” e la loro “immagine”. Obiettivo del lavoro è quello di evidenziare le forti potenzialità turistiche di questo territorio, non soltanto per la presenza di un patrimonio artistico di valore inestimabile, eredità delle variegate ed alterne vicende umane espresse nelle diverse forme di cultura materiale ed immateriale, ma anche per i grandi giacimenti naturali. Sono stati, inoltre, indagati i punti di forza di Ragusa, Modica e Scicli, città che appartennero all’antica Contea. Questi tre centri fanno parte con Caltagirone, Catania, Militello in Val di Catania e Noto di un ampio progetto denominato il “Piano di Gestione del Val di Noto” che ha come obiettivo l’analisi di tutte le risorse comprese in questa vasta area avente come unico comune denominatore il Barocco, già riconosciuto dall’Unesco patrimonio dell’umanità, e coglierne nel contempo le differenze.

Saint George’s Church in Modica Historical chocolate’s art in Modica The Cioccolato di Modica ("Chocolate of Modica", also known as cioccolata modicana) is an Italian P.G.I. specialty chocolate,[1] typical of the municipality of Modica in Sicily, characterized by an ancient and original recipe using manual grinding (rather than conching) which gives the chocolate a peculiar grainy texture and aromatic flavor.[2][3][4] The specialty, inspired by the Aztec original recipe for Xocolatl, was introduced in the County of Modica by the Spaniards, during their domination in southern Italy.[5][6] Since 2009 a festival named "Chocobarocco" is held every year in the city.     [email protected] The Barocco Valley – Noto, Modica and Ragusa Today meet our staff and departure for Noto. In the Arab period the town was the capital of one of the three districts of Sicily (the Val di Noto) and once defeated by the Christians, Noto became a rich Norman city. Unfortunately it was - totally destroyed by the 1693 Sicilian earthquake and rebuilt in a new position nearer to the Ionian Sea. But the new Noto is a masterpiece of Sicilian Baroque! Most of the buildings, including churches and noble palaces, follow one another along the main street - and are characterized by the honey tonality of tufa stone. Facades and balconies are all skillfully decorated by grinning masks, lion heads, putti and other embellishments. Unmissable is Noto Cathedral, dedicated to Saint Nicholas and built in perfect Sicilian Baroque style. - Then to Modica. Like the other towns in the Val di Noto, was badly damaged in the 1693 earthquake and largely rebuilt in Sicilian Baroque style. It is divided into two parts, “higher” Modica and “lower” Modica, which are connected by numerous flights of steps. Palazzi and houses rise from the bottom of the gorge Italian, English seemingly stacked one on top of the other. Magnificent churches, with their inspiring domes, bell towers and intricate facades, punctuate the red-tiled roofs and one is struck by the uniform beauty of the whole. Modica has a long and varied history, complete with the usual toing and froing of successions of invaders. It came to real prominence in 1296, when Frederick II of Aragon (not to - be confused with Frederick II “Stupor Mundi”) formed the “County of Modica”, a kind of “state within a state” that was initially governed by Mandfredi I Chiaramonte.

Swetzer. This 50th Anniversary edition contains much of the same structure of the earlier history, but the narrative has been edited, revised, and expanded to encompass events from the end of the Cold War to the emergence of today’s Global War on Terrorism. However, certain sections in the earlier edition dealing with each of the countries in the theater and minor bases have been omitted.
