New Constructions of House and Home in Contemporary Argentine and Chilean Cinema (2005 – 2015) Paul Rumney Merchant This thesis explores the potential of domestic space to act as the ground for new forms of community and sociability in Argentine and Chilean films from the early twenty-first century. It thus tracks a shift in the political treatment of the home in Southern Cone cinema, away from allegorical affirmations of the family, and towards a reflection on film’s ability to both delineate and disrupt lived spaces. In the works examined, the displacement of attention from human subjects to the material environment defamiliarises the domestic sphere and complicates its relation to the nation. The house thus does not act as ‘a body of images that give mankind proofs or illusions of stability’ (Bachelard), but rather as a medium through which identities are challenged and reformed. This anxiety about domestic space demands, I argue, a renewal of the deconstructive frameworks often deployed in studies of Latin American culture (Moreiras, Williams). The thesis turns to new materialist theories, among others, as a supplement to deconstructive thinking, and argues that theorisations of cinema’s political agency must be informed by social, economic and urban histories. The prominence of suburban settings moreover encourages a nuancing of the ontological links often invoked between cinema, the house, and the city. The first section of the thesis rethinks two concepts closely linked to the home: memory and modernity.

Complicit with Dictatorship and Complacent with its Legacy: Accomplices and Bystanders in Chile after Pinochet Audrey Hansen University of Michigan—Ann Arbor What responsibility do we have to the people around us when we narrate our own stories? How does making ourselves vulnerable to judgement for our prior actions affect our community? These are just a few of the important questions about accountability and community that Michael J. Lazzara considers in his book Civil Obedience: Complicity and Complacency in Chile since Pinochet. Going beyond an emphasis on the importance of restoring memory surrounding the human rights violations of General Augusto Pinochet’s dictatorship (1973-1990), the works examined in this book shed light on the present-day impact of narratives by complicit and complacent subjects. Crucially, Lazzara argues that Chile’s protracted struggle to reckon with its violent past is exacerbated not only by the failure of civilian actors who were complicit with the regime to meaningfully account for their actions, but also by the complacency of Hansen 362 those who benefitted from the continuation of the dictatorship’s neoliberal economic model. Civil Obedience: Complicity and Complacency in Chile since Pinochet draws on a wide variety of mostly nonfiction primary texts to construct its argument, including biographies, autobiographies, films, and television interviews. Each chapter deals with one specific subject position, although Lazzara is careful to acknowledge that this is only a selection from the endless variety of subject positions possible on the spectrum of complicity.

    El día que Mariana Callejas ganó el concurso literario de una revista de izquierda en Chile “Estoy muy orgulloso de la decisión que tomamos, no podíamos convertirnos en lo que nosotros despreciábamos y anotarnos como censores”. Así resume Álvaro Godoy lo que pasó entre agosto y septiembre de 1981 en la redacción de la mítica revista “La Bicicleta”, uno de los escasos medios escritos que durante la dictadura daba cuenta de lo que pasaba en el perseguido mundo cultural juvenil. Godoy era subdirector de la publicación que durante su tercer año de edición se animó a organizar un concurso literario. Grande sería la sorpresa al confirmarse que el cuento ganador estaba escrito por Mariana Callejas, esposa de Michael Townley, implicados ambos en los asesinatos del ex canciller del gobierno de Salvador Allende, Orlando Letelier, en pleno corazón de Washington; y del ex comandante en jefe del Ejército durante la Unidad Popular, el general Carlos Prats, en el barrio de Palermo en Buenos Aires. Complicity has taken many forms throughout the dictatorship (1973-1990) and transition to democracy (1990-) and demands to be studied in various spheres: among intellectuals, the Church, the political right, the media, and certain “renovated” leftists who have overtly and tacitly upheld Pinochet’s project. This presentation will examine the case of Mariana Callejas, a literary writer who married the American-born DINA henchman Michael Townley, infamous for his complicity in the deaths of ex-President Eduardo Frei Montalva, Orlando Letelier, and General Carlos Prats (a general loyal to Salvador Allende). After many years living in impunity, Callejas, who continued to write literary fiction up until her death in 2016, spent time in prison as an accomplice to the Letelier assassination. In many ways, her case emblematizes the complicities of the Chilean intelligentsia with the dictatorship, while also revealing how common citizens committed themselves ideologically to state-sponsored violence.

Augusto Pinochet (1973-1990). Gen. Prats was Army commander in chief under President Salvador Allende (1970-1973) but was replaced by Pinochet in August 1973. Less than a month later, Pinochet led the coup against Allende. Prats and his wife then went into exile in Argentina; they were killed when a bomb planted in their car exploded in a Buenos Aires suburb on Sept. 30, 1974. The Chilean courts opened the investigation in December 2002, and the Santiago Appeals Court assigned the case to Special Investigating Judge Alejandro Solis in January.

Sombras que amenazan dos columnas claves de la transición, la cívica y la militar, si se comprueba que los asesinos del químico de la DINA y el DINE Eugenio Berríos fueron militares y que se lo ejecutó para tapar otro asesinato: el del ex Presidente Eduardo Frei Montalva. Matar a Berríos también tuvo otro objetivo no menor y que aún perdura: impedir que emergiera la caja negra del capítulo de la guerra química que protagonizó uno de los escuadrones más secretos de los servicios de seguridad de la dictadura. El epicentro del conflicto se instala hoy en los tribunales chilenos. El segundo informe de la Brigada de Homicidios debe llegar a manos de una jueza en estos días. Bastante polvareda levantó en mayo del año pasado el primero de ellos, uno que contenía la identificación de seis militares –dos oficiales y cuatro suboficiales– como los presuntos participantes en la operación para sacar al bioquímico Eugenio Berríos de Chile, a fines de 1991. El Ejército reaccionó airado, se quejó de no haber sido informado por La Moneda y de falta de “coordinación” con la policía de Investigaciones. No esperó la citación judicial y presentó “voluntariamente” a los mencionados en el informe. Pero la jueza Olga Pérez –Sexto Juzgado del Crimen– no tenía aún el informe en sus manos ni pauta de interrogatorio. Todos quedaron en libertad por falta de méritos.

Una simple revisión de las producciones de los escritores latinoamericanos muestra sobremanera el alto grado de referencialidad que existe entre la ficción y la facticidad. Los autores latinoamericanos, sea por conveniencia propia o por razones más profundas, no vacilan en utilizar recursos no ficcionales para construir sus obras. Las páginas siguientes se centrarán en evidenciar cómo el chileno Roberto Bolaño se vale de datos históricos y biográficos reales para entretejer el tejido ficcional de su novela, Nocturno de Chile. Palabras-clave: Chile, ficción, facticidad, verosimilitud, intertextualidad. Abstract. A simple review of the productions of Latin American writers shows the high degree of referentiality between fiction and facticity. Latin American authors, whether for their own convenience or for deeper reasons, do not hesitate to use non-fictional resources to construct their works.
