No conventions in October, which is rare these days, but there was the Steampunk Fortnight on Tor.com. They had some seriously good stuff, including writing from Diana Vick, who also appears in these pages, and myself! There was a great piece from Nisi Shawl that mentioned the amazing panel that she, Liz Gorinsky, Michael Swanwick and Ann VanderMeer were on at World Fantasy last year. Jaymee Goh had a piece on Commodification and Post-Modernism that was well-written, though slightly troubling to me. Stephen Hunt’s Steampunk Timeline was good stuff, and the omnipresent GD Falksen (who has never written for us!) had a couple of good piece. Me? I wrote an article about how Tomorrowland was the signpost for the rise of Steampunk. You can read it at http://www.tor.com/blogs/2010/10/goodbye-tomorrow- hello-yesterday. The second piece is all about an amusement park called Gaslight in New Orleans. I’ll let you decide about that one - http://www.tor.com/blogs/2010/10/gaslight- amusement. This much attention is a good thing for Steampunk, especially from a site like Tor.com, a gateway for a lot of SF readers who aren’t necessarily a part of fandom.

    READING 3: Steampunk Guide to Subgenres Not all of the following terms are actual official subgenres. They are methods, however, to divide up the different fads and avenues (or should I say backalleys) that Steampunk has taken over the years. Boilerpunk The blue-collar answer to aristocratic Steampunk, incorporating the experiences and hardships of the workers actually shoveling coal to brain steam to the upper classes. Cattlepunk A setting which otherwise more or less resembles your typical John Ford film will have things like robots, super-weapons, and wacky gadgets tossed in. Interestingly, the heroes of such stories are usually pretty normal considering the setting- they'll use weapons like pistols and shotguns to take down warmechs. This kind of plot usually takes place either on another planet or in a very obvious Alternate History, since making it work on Earth seriously messes up the space time continuum. This setting is unusual among the Punk Punk subtropes in that it actually predates Steam Punk, which is generally considered the ur- trope. For this we can thank The Wild Wild West, which pioneered the genre by thinking in terms of The Western meets Spy Drama- which, in practice, ends up looking a lot like Steam Punk. Expect ample Schizo Tech in this setting. This a bit of a variation on the IN SPACE! model, though characters here rarely ever actually go into space, at least for extended periods of time. See the inversion, Space Western. A related genre is the Weird West, for when the west gets a supernatural treatment. Not to be confused with Cowpunk, a form of music combining (you guessed it!) Country and Punk, which existed mainly in the 1980s.

They then launched into a rapid-fire parade of sketches filled with gleeful raunch and pokes at racial stereotypes. The performance had the usual trappings of a night out at any comedy club around town. But little about this invitation only night was typical.     Fred Steiner Memorialized by Stephanie Wolf Obituary by JON BURLINGAME Posted in Variety on Sun., June 26, 2011 Composer Fred Steiner, who wrote the themes for "Perry Mason" and "Rocky and Bullwinkle" and who later became a respected film-music historian and musicologist, died of natural causes Thursday at his home in Ajijic, Mexico. He was 88. Steiner was Oscar nominated for his contributions to Quincy Jones' 1985 score for "The Color Purple.” He also scored, on his own, a handful of features including "Man From Del Rio," "Time Limit," "The St. Valentine's Day Massacre" and "The Sea Gypsies." But it was in television where Steiner made an enduring mark, with memorable scores for seven early- 1960s episodes of "The Twilight Zone" and a dozen scores for the original "Star Trek" including such now- classic episodes as "Charlie X," "The Corbomite Maneuver" and "Balance of Terror." His TV work -- which spanned the 1950s through the 1990s -- also included dozens of episodes of "Gunsmoke," "Have Gun -- Will Travel," "Rawhide," "Daniel Boone," "The Wild Wild West," "The Virginian," "The Guns of Will Sonnett," "Hogan's Heroes," "Mannix," "Hawaii Five-O," "Dynasty," "Amazing Stories" and "Star Trek: The Next Generation.” He also penned the themes for TV's "Navy Log" and "Boots and Saddles." Steiner's most famous piece is probably the 1957 theme for the long-running lawyer series "Perry Mason," although his fun music for the 1961 cartoon series "Rocky and His Friends" (later, in primetime, "The Bullwinkle Show") is an equal favorite of baby boomers; Steiner's music included the Broadway- style "Bullwinkle Show" theme and a sendup of silent-movie-music clichés for "Dudley Do-Right of the Mounties." His facility with animation also resulted in the theme for "Beany and Cecil" plus several scores for "Tiny Toon Adventures" in the early 1990s.
