Almost a century after its foundation, production of the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 also sees the Bugatti marque returning to its roots in Molsheim. In 1909, Ettore Bugatti moved to Molsheim, where he had secured financing to start manufacturing ten automobiles and five aircraft engines. Over the next three decades, until the outbreak of the Second World War, some 7 900 vehicles left the Atelier in Molsheim. Despite such a relatively small number of cars sold, the Bugatti brand has remained an automobile legend. Inside the light and generously dimensioned Atelier, inspired by an artist‘s workplace, Bugatti is once again producing works of art with every Veyron A legend returns built. Since 2003, Molsheim, Chateau St. Jean and the Atelier are at the centre of the renaissance of Bugatti. Te Bugatti Veyron 16.4 represents the rebirth of this myth. Te achievement of developing a car built in series with 1 001 hp and a special double-clutch gearbox to cope with the acceleration was an enormous engineering challenge. One worthy of the Bugattis of the past. Yet Bugatti was always up to the challenge and one step ahead of the field. For example, Ettore was one of the first manufacturers to use aluminium for the chassis and wheels – making the Type 35 lighter than its contemporaries. And today‘s Veyron equally makes use of innovative lightweight components taken from aeronautic design and racing cars. Bugatti Veyron 16.4 In short, Ettore would have been proud of the Bugatti Veyron 16.4. Te Bugatti Veyron 16.4 was designed to explore the limits of technical possibilities. Te idea was to build a car of extremes. To build a Bugatti. With its 16 cylinders, each of 0.5 litre capacity, four valves per cylinder and a turbocharger per four cylinders, the Veyron houses the world‘s most powerful engine in a series vehicle. Te perfect combination of the high performance power unit (1 001 hp) and torque machine (1 250 Nm) makes for an unrivalled piece of precision technology. With Launch Control for a quick start and Cruise Control to maintain a high speed. Te seven-gear, twin-clutch gearbox (DSG) is the first to handle such high torque values. It combines the dynamic advantages of manual transmission with the convenience of an automatic: the next gear is pre-engaged, ready to take up the propulsion without interruption. Allowing for pure and smooth acceleration with extremely short shift times of less than 150 ms – from 0 to 400 km/h. Engine and Gearbox A top speed of 407 km/h reached in just under a minute. 0 to 100 km/h in 2.5 seconds and just 9.8 seconds to cover the classic quarter-mile. On a par with the fastest Formula 1 cars, and unparalleled in a series automobile. Yet thanks to its aerodynamics, intelligent four-wheel drive and specially developed tyres, the Veyron reassuringly and safely transfers this power to the road surface. And if there is one thing the Veyron can do better than accelerate, it is the opposite: Large, internally ventilated brake disks with a specially developed cooling system will stop the car from 400 to 0 in under 10 seconds. Above 200 km/h the rear wing also serves as an air brake for additional deceleration. Bringing the car to a standstill from 100 km/h after just 32 metres. Acceleration and Decelaration Outstanding speed requires special and applied aerodynamics. Te standard configuration is sufficient up to 220 km/h. Beyond this point a handling configuration with reduced ground clearance and the wing set at an angle of 15 degrees enables the Veyron to climb up to 375 km/h. Unlocking the top-speed mode with a special key sets the wing to 2 degrees, minimizing downthrust and freeing the Veyron to reach its top performance, up to 400 km/h and beyond. Further safety at speed is guaranteed by the four-point electronic stability program in the Veyron. At the heart of the stability control system is the four-wheel drive: Te Haldex clutch distributes the torque to the front and rear axles as required, while the rear differential lock ensures the dynamics of the rear drive wheels for smooth negotiation of fast curves. Te third control system is the ESP, which acts on each individual wheel with previously unmatched reaction times. ESP also controls engine management via ASR anti-slip control and MSR thrust reduction – increasing or reducing thrust as required. At the centre of such sophistication is a telemetry computer that monitors all vehicle data. Tis can be called up by the Veyron‘s own PDA, which is also used to enter the destination in the GPS navigation, which in turn is discreetly displayed in the rear-view mirror. Te overall result is a minimalist aesthetic – Speed reduced to the essentials. Form and function in perfect harmony. BUGATTI DIATTO AVIO 8C WORDS CLAUDE TEISEN-SIMONY & DAVID LILLYWHITE ARCHIVE PICTURES BUGATTI TRUST A mysterious chassis fitted with a one-off Bugatti aero engine, discovered in a Turin museum, turns out to have links to a famous pilot and to Maserati’s first car. But could it also have been the first step towards the super-luxury Bugatti Royale saloon? The lost Bugatti 90 / MAGNETO MAGNETO / 91 BUGATTI DIATTO AVIO 8C T This is one hell of a tale. It’s controversial at times, it brings in threads involving World War One fighter pilot Roland Garros, surprising links to Maserati, and the likely origins of not just Bugatti’s Grand Prix engines, but also the legendary Bugatti Royale. Most exciting of all, it introduces a remarkable aero-engined Bugatti that’s never been seen before. To whet your appetite, it’s a 14.5-litre and develops 250bhp at 2160rpm – Bugatti’s equivalent of the ‘Beast of Turin’ Fiat or the Benz-engined Scariscrow. Crucially, a large proportion of it is original, rescued from decades in hiding by a legendary Bugatti expert before moving on to its current owner. It’s been painstakingly researched, restored and part-recreated in secret by craftsmen in Denmark and the Czech Republic. To all but a select few, its existence remained unknown until its big reveal at the Rétromobile show in Paris on February 6. So, how did we get to this point? Let’s start with the engine, because actually it’s more important than the car itself in many ways. The story begins with French pilot Roland Garros, who in 1913 made the first-ever non-stop flight across the Mediterranean, flying a fast Morane-Saulnier monoplane.

The Bugatti EB110, Veyron and Chiron1 are seen as milestones in automotive engineering from the 1990s, 2000s and 2010s. Bugatti enthusiasts and owners worldwide dream of having all three vehicles complete in their own collection as “the trilogy of modern Bugatti”. They are both coveted collector’s items and an investment. All three models came together for a photo shoot – unique photos of a collection which rarely exists in the world. Bugatti EB110 Super Sport At the beginning of the 1990s, Romano Artioli created the first super sports car of modern times with the EB110. EB are the initials of Ettore Bugatti, while 110 stands for his 110th birthday. At the presentation in Paris on 15 September 1991 – on Ettore Bugatti’s 110th birthday – Bugatti revealed a vehicle featuring sensational technology: the lightweight monocoque weighs just 125 kilograms, and is the first series-production car to be made of carbon. Aluminium and carbon, among other things, are used for the body, the wheels are cast from magnesium, and the bolts are made of titanium. The car is powered by a 3.5-litre V12 mid-engine with four turbochargers and a maximum engine speed of 8,250 rpm. Sixty valves ensure fast gas exchange, while the four turbochargers operate with a boost pressure of between 1.05 and 1.2 bar and reduce the turbo lag to a minimum.

  • Bugatti: with Our History at Heart and Our Eyes on the Future
Bugatti: with our history at heart and our eyes on the future Bugatti celebrates its 110th anniversary with two world premieres at Geneva Motor Show Molsheim, 5 March 2019. What a start to an anniversary year. At the first major international motor show in 2019, Bugatti is presenting two world premieres. At the Geneva Motor Show, the French luxury brand is showing the hyper sports car “La Voiture Noire1“ and the Chiron Sport “110 ans Bugatti”. The special edition of the Chiron Sport , which is being produced in a limited series of 20 cars, celebrates the brand’s 110th anniversary as well as its French identity. However, the highlight will be the unveiling of “La Voiture Noire”, which had been kept secret up to the beginning of the show. This is a homage to the legendary Bugatti Type 57 SC Atlantic. This one-off grand tourisme has already been sold and is the world’s most expensive new car, at €11 million. “In 2019, we are celebrating a special anniversary. Bugatti was established 110 years ago. These two models pay homage to our long tradition and to our French homeland,” says Bugatti president Stephan Winkelmann. The third model on the Bugatti stand is also in line with this approach: the Bugatti Divo2, is a hyper sports car which is being produced in a limited edition of 40 vehicles. With its modified aerodynamics, it is designed for even higher lateral acceleration than the Chiron3 and ensures extreme driving pleasure. With “La Voiture Noire“, the French luxury automobile brand has once again shown that it produces the world’s most precious and exclusive hyper sports cars.

Ettore Bugatti – perfectionist and inventor MOLSHEIM 12 05 2020 FROM FIVE-TOED SHOES, TO SPECIAL CUTLERY AND THE BÉBÉ BUGATTI – A LITTLE JOURNEY THROUGH THE BUGATTI FOUNDER’S LIFEWORK. A technical product is not perfect until it is aesthetically impeccable as well, Ettore Bugatti once said. And the company founder applied this standard not just to his own automobiles but to other everyday items too. If he was not satisfied with something he had bought, he often improved it or decided to produce his own version of it. The following small selection of examples demonstrates just how wide-ranging his inventive talent was. The henhouse Ettore Bugatti loved pasta more than anything and always had it freshly prepared by an Italian cook. For this he needed chicken eggs. When he went out to get some one day, he returned in an angry state without having purchased a single egg: the prices had gone up yet again. He then decided to keep chickens himself and set up his own little chicken farm. He designed the henhouse with wheels so that he could move it around his large grounds. Of course, the investment required meant that the eggs were subsequently much more expensive than if he had bought them individually. But at least they were fresh and he was no longer dependent on the farmers. The pasta machine with a steering wheel One day Bugatti’s cook complained about a malfunctioning pasta machine in the kitchen. It would take several weeks before a new machine could be delivered to the Alsace region.
