The Lost Bugatti
BUGATTI DIATTO AVIO 8C WORDS CLAUDE TEISEN-SIMONY & DAVID LILLYWHITE ARCHIVE PICTURES BUGATTI TRUST A mysterious chassis fitted with a one-off Bugatti aero engine, discovered in a Turin museum, turns out to have links to a famous pilot and to Maserati’s first car. But could it also have been the first step towards the super-luxury Bugatti Royale saloon? The lost Bugatti 90 / MAGNETO MAGNETO / 91 BUGATTI DIATTO AVIO 8C T This is one hell of a tale. It’s controversial at times, it brings in threads involving World War One fighter pilot Roland Garros, surprising links to Maserati, and the likely origins of not just Bugatti’s Grand Prix engines, but also the legendary Bugatti Royale. Most exciting of all, it introduces a remarkable aero-engined Bugatti that’s never been seen before. To whet your appetite, it’s a 14.5-litre and develops 250bhp at 2160rpm – Bugatti’s equivalent of the ‘Beast of Turin’ Fiat or the Benz-engined Scariscrow. Crucially, a large proportion of it is original, rescued from decades in hiding by a legendary Bugatti expert before moving on to its current owner. It’s been painstakingly researched, restored and part-recreated in secret by craftsmen in Denmark and the Czech Republic. To all but a select few, its existence remained unknown until its big reveal at the Rétromobile show in Paris on February 6. So, how did we get to this point? Let’s start with the engine, because actually it’s more important than the car itself in many ways. The story begins with French pilot Roland Garros, who in 1913 made the first-ever non-stop flight across the Mediterranean, flying a fast Morane-Saulnier monoplane. -

Over the Years
Over the Years Indra Rai Sharma Over the Years -A Photo Autobiography In 2010 before going to US, I had been going through my old papers. As it appeared, I had wished to pen down my autobiography long back. In my diary on February 10, 1963, I had written that if I would ever write my autobiography, I would caption it ‘My Life and Dreams’. In 1997 again, in my acceptance letter to the notice regarding my impending retirement that I sent on June 23, to Mr. A. Sankara Narayanan, Executive Director, M/S Hindustan Motors, I wrote: “I wish I could pen down my years at HM some day and hope that it would provide useful insight for our budding engineers as Lee Iacocca’s biography or the book ’On a clear day you can see General Motors’ provided to millions of it readers.’ I knew that I was not that great a name in HM or industry, though I aspired to be one. Perhaps I didn’t select the right profession or I couldn’t take advantage of the opportunity that I got to convert the same to become big. I remember my teasing of my grandmother and later on my mother in school days by telling them time and again that they should not expect me to do routine household work, as I would be a big man. Later on I joked with some close friends and their wives that one day I would get into number 1 Rajpath. I meant Rastrapati Bhawan. I failed to become as great or big as I wanted but I did work very hard for every assignment that I got. -

Bugatti EB110, Veyron, Chiron – the Trilogy of Modern Bugatti
Bugatti EB110, Veyron, Chiron – The Trilogy of modern Bugatti MOLSHEIM 31 03 2020 EXCEPTIONAL VEHICLES: THREE BUGATTI SUPER SPORTS CARS FROM THREE DECADES All-wheel drive, four turbochargers and a monocoque made of carbon – Bugatti’s proven and continuously improved ingredients for super sports cars from the last three decades. The Bugatti EB110, Veyron and Chiron1 are seen as milestones in automotive engineering from the 1990s, 2000s and 2010s. Bugatti enthusiasts and owners worldwide dream of having all three vehicles complete in their own collection as “the trilogy of modern Bugatti”. They are both coveted collector’s items and an investment. All three models came together for a photo shoot – unique photos of a collection which rarely exists in the world. Bugatti EB110 Super Sport At the beginning of the 1990s, Romano Artioli created the first super sports car of modern times with the EB110. EB are the initials of Ettore Bugatti, while 110 stands for his 110th birthday. At the presentation in Paris on 15 September 1991 – on Ettore Bugatti’s 110th birthday – Bugatti revealed a vehicle featuring sensational technology: the lightweight monocoque weighs just 125 kilograms, and is the first series-production car to be made of carbon. Aluminium and carbon, among other things, are used for the body, the wheels are cast from magnesium, and the bolts are made of titanium. The car is powered by a 3.5-litre V12 mid-engine with four turbochargers and a maximum engine speed of 8,250 rpm. Sixty valves ensure fast gas exchange, while the four turbochargers operate with a boost pressure of between 1.05 and 1.2 bar and reduce the turbo lag to a minimum. -
There May Be Trouble Ahead…
There may be trouble ahead… The latest book in our Bite-Size Brexit range is now published! ‘Carmageddon?: Brexit & Beyond for UK Auto’ looks at the manufacturing industry at the heart of the issues around Brexit, with the industry’s sophisticated just in time and other major logistical challenges. The book, edited by Professor David Bailey, Professor Alex De Ruyter, Neil Fowler and John Mair, brings together a wide spectrum of industry experts and world-renowned auto industry figures, providing a real perspective on Brexit at the raw edge. Contributors include leading auto analysts, top automotive journalists, politicians and academics. Today, we are delighted to share Ian Henry’s contribution to the book. Ian Henry is the Owner and Managing Director of AutoAnalysis and Visiting Professor at the Centre for Brexit Studies. Enjoy… There may be trouble ahead… Car production in the UK for the 11 months to November 2019 was just over 1.23m units1, a fall of 14.5 per cent year-on-year. The full year figures (due out at the same time as this book was published) will likely be around 1.32m. The November fall was actually 16.5 per cent, due in part to scheduled shutdowns at some vehicle plants in anticipation of the UK leaving the EU without a deal on October 31. Disappointing sales of old models and planned model changeovers (e.g. the Nissan Juke switch to a new model led to zero output for several months in 2019) did not help the production environment last year. As well as declining production volumes, the vehicle manufacturing sector had – according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders SMMT – borne Brexit-related costs and contingency measures valued at more than £500m. -
