About this Release

Beethoven’s three final sonatas constitute one of music’s great spiritual journeys, one which only a very few pianists are qualified to undertake. Steven Osborne, whose Beethoven has been widely acclaimed, need fear no comparisons.

Three composers whose contributions to the Anglican choral tradition are rich in historical significance: no less than the Abbey itself, much of this music is inseparably bound up with the national celebrations or commemorations appropriate to war, coronation and royal marriage.

About this Release

Saint-Saëns’s Symphony No. 2 is, by any standards, an outright winner and deserves to be much better known. Here, it’s one of two substantial works flanking a rambunctious account of ‘Danse macabre’.

CHSA 5232 1 CD 03/05/19 CHANDOS

About this Release

The Norwegian vocal ensemble Edvard Grieg Kor is the resident acappella ensemble at Troldhaugen, the home of Edvard Grieg. Displaying versatility across all musical genres, they perform regularly with Philharmonic and also form the core of the Chorus for Bergen National . They have had numerous works and arrangements written specially for them by leading composers including Jonathan Rathbone, and David Lang, both of whom are represented here on this the choir’s debut recording. Greig’s Fire Salmer, (Four Psalms) after Norwegian folk tunes (his final opus) and his shorter Ave Maris Stella (performed here in an a cappella arrangement made by the composer) are two rare examples of religion in Greig’s output. Works by fellow Norwegian composers Ole Bull and Agathe Backer Grøndahl, and a sensational and virtuosic arrangement of Greig’s Holberg Suite complete the programme.

CHAN 20034 1 CD 03/05/19 CHANDOS

About this Release

The Romanze is Strauss’ first attempt at writing for a soloist and orchestra. The influence of Mozart’s piano concertos, which Strauss was studying at the time, is apparent, not least in the writing for solo clarinet and the orchestral bassoon, and re-visited by Strauss in his final instrumental work the Duett-Concertino from 1947. Like other of his late compositions, this work seems to reject the full-blown expressionism for which we know Strauss best, and reflects a more neo-classical sound. Another early work, the Violin Concerto was first performed in 1882, and demonstrates Strauss’ growing technical skill and developing compositional voice. Strauss ultimately came to distance himself from a piece which he presumably regarded as unrepresentative of his mature style. Many commentators on the works of Strauss have felt that the Burleske was a significant turning point in his development, seemingly pointing the way ahead to the technical dexterity and emotional palette of his later tone poems. Originally written for Strauss’s mentor in Dresden Hans von Bülow, the work was premiered by Eugen d’Albert, in 1890 following von Bülow’s rejection of the work.

CHAN 10980 1 CD 03/05/19 CHANDOS

About this Release

The three great chamber works, the String Quartet, Piano Quintet, and Violin Sonata, were among the very last works that Elgar wrote, composed during an intensive and productive period in 1918 and 1919 whilst living at Brinkwells in Sussex, and under the twin shadows of the horrors of the Great War and the terminal illness of his wife, Alice. The String Quartet was dedicated to the original Brodsky Quartet (the name subsequently taken by the current group when they arrived as students at the Royal Northern College of Music) and was championed by this new Brodsky Quartet from the off, sitting alongside Delius’s Quartet on their debut recording (1984). It has remained a cornerstone of their repertoire ever since. The Brodsky Quartet took the opportunity of the centenary year of both works to perform the String Quartet alongside the Piano Quintet with their frequent co-performer Martin Roscoe, and this recording is a result of that commemoration.

Il Cembalo Transalpino: Music from the Fitzwilliam Collection

Sophie Yates

CHAN 0819 1 CD 03/05/19 CHANDOS CHACONNE EARLY MUSIC

About this Release

All the music in this programme comes from the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, and most of it was collected by its founder, Richard, Seventh Viscount Fitzwilliam of Merrion. A polymath, lover of music, amateur composer and harpsichordist, musically active from about 1760 until his death, Fitzwilliam created a legacy of exceptional importance to English musical culture. The recording features the Boni harpsichord from the Fitzwilliam Collection, was originally made by Giovanni Battista Boni who worked in Cortona in Tuscany. In some ways it is conventional for its time, having a slab sawn cypress soundboard and light cypress case, but its original set-up was a highly unusual one, with three sets of strings at the same 8 ft pitch. During a previous restoration, by Trevor Beckerleg in 1975, the third register, which had been out of use, was re-instated and this gives the player more resources than does the usual Italian harpsichord: both the front and back rows of jacks pluck the same set of strings but in different places, which gives them a distinctly different timbre, and the various combinations of the three registers provide the player with five distinct sounds to choose from.

Elly Ney: The Complete Brunswick & Electrola solo 78-rpm recordings

Elly Ney, Willem van Hoogstraten, Fritz Zaun

APR_7311 3 CD 03/05/19 APR

About this Release

German pianist Elly Ney (1882–1968) came to be regarded as one of the great Beethoven interpreters of the 20th century and her Pre-War recording of the Op. 111 sonata must still be considered one of the very finest. That recording, and all the other solo and concerto recordings she made for Electrola before the war are included here. Particularly noteworthy are the three landmark concerto recordings, the Mozart and Beethoven vivacious and stylish, the Strauss revealing just what a virtuoso Ney could be. Though she specialized in Austro- German repertoire, another side to her art is shown in her early, almost unknown, American Brunswick acoustic recordings, reissued in this set for the first time. Here the repertoire choice is broader and lighter and there is even a stunningly articulated Debussy ‘Feux d’artifice’ – the work’s first recording.

BIS2300 1 SACD 03/05/19 BIS

About this Release

Jean-Jacques Kantorow and the Tapiola Sinfonietta have championed the music of Saint-Saëns on a series of acclaimed discs, and are now joined by the young Alexandre Kantorow –son of the conductor – for a survey of his works for piano and orchestra. In 1858, Saint-Saëns became the first major French composer to write a piano concerto, but on this first disc of two the Kantorows present the three last concertos. Composed over a period of almost 30 years (1868 – 1896), these are highly individual works: Piano Concerto No. 3 is a bold attempt to reconcile Classical form with a Lisztian pianistic brio, No. 4 employs an unusual formal scheme in which themes are reused in a cyclic manner and, finally, the ‘Egyptian’ (No. 5), named after the second movement, which in the composer’s own words describes ‘a sort of Eastern journey that goes all the way to the Far East’.

About this Release

In terms of genre, Allan Pettersson was uniquely single-minded: during his entire career as a composer (1953–80) he produced only a dozen or so works that were not symphonies. By name, Violin Concerto No. 2 is one of these, but it is fair to say that it straddles the divide. Pettersson himself remarked: ‘In reality my work was a Symphony for violin and orchestra. From this results the fact that the solo violin is incorporated into the orchestra like any other instrument.’ It should therefore not come as a surprise that Christian Lindberg has chosen to include this massive 53-minute work in his acclaimed and award-winning series of Pettersson’s symphonies, released in collaboration with the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra.

About this Release

On the 3rd January 2019, only a few weeks after winning the 10th Hamamatsu International Piano Competition, Can Çakmur returned to the ACT CITY Concert Hall in Hamamatsu in order to record his debut disc. Can’s chosen programme reflects his wide-ranging musical interests – from Haydn’s late F-minor set of variations and Schubert’s early Sonata in E flat to Sacrifice from 2017, composed by Fuyuhiko Sasaki for the competition. Opening with Liszt’s transcription of the Beethoven song Adelaide, the amply filled disc also includes Bartók’s challenging Out of Doors and Black Earth by Can’s compatriot, the Turkish pianist and composer Fazıl Say.

Reports: choral works by Perttu Haapanen

Helsinki Chamber Choir, Nils Schweckendiek

BIS2452 1 CD 03/05/19 BIS

About this Release

Playful and with an acute ear for the full range of possibilities of the human voice, Perttu Haapanen has established himself as one of the most exploratory and intellectually curious composers of vocal music active in the Nordic countries. His output includes works for a wide variety of musical formations, but the human voice is central to much of it. He combines a deep understanding of traditional choral sonority with a modernist fascination for extended techniques and structural rigour and a post-modern interest in the deconstruction of text. In his writing, Haapanen examines the full range of sound production available using the human vocal apparatus. We hear singing, of course, but also whispering, speaking, shouting, Sprechgesang, breathing sounds, whistling, lip smacks, tongue clicks, grunting as well as nasal tone and falsetto.

About this Release

It was in 1905, an entire decade prior to Wilhelm Stenhammar’s second symphony, that Hugo Alfvén completed his third symphony. In this work Alfvén, like many other Scandinavian composers, found the typical Nordic tone of his music in the sunny south. Like Sibelius’ second symphony and Stenhammar’s Serenade for Orchestra, this symphony is Swedish through and through. In addition, it is pervaded by the longing for home repeatedly felt by Alfvén during his years of wandering. He composed his Uppsala Rhapsody in 1907 for the commemoration of the two hundredth anniversary of the birth of the great botanist Carl von Linné (Linnaeus) held at the University of Uppsala in May 1907. Like its counterpart by Johannes Brahms, this work turned out to be an ‘Academic Festival Overture’ including some student songs. The Concert Suite from Alfvén’s ballet The Mountain King offers a masterful wealth of colour. His excellent knowledge of the art of instrumentation was the product of his earlier activity as a violinist in the Royal Court Orchestra, which also served as the Opera Orchestra.

About this Release

A magnificent oratorio, long forgotten, has been rediscovered in Leipzig. Gregor Meyer conducts the Gewandhaus Chorus and the camerata lipsiensis in Friedrich Schneider’s Das Weltgericht. The composer, pianist, organist, and Anhalt-Dessau court music director Friedrich Schneider was one of the most creative and productive minds in the Central German music world during the first half of the nineteenth century but today is unfortunately a forgotten man. Das Weltgericht was once one of the most famous German oratorios, inspired euphoric headlines everywhere when it was first composed, and occasioned genuine storms of enthusiasm among concertgoers. The libretto is by August Apel, who based his text on the biblical accounts of the Last Judgment in Matthew 24-25 and the Revelation of John. A plot in the strict sense is not narrated; rather, the persons are biblical messengers who tell us of heaven, hell, and earth. This oratorio situated between classicism and romanticism was often performed but then was forgotten for many decades.

About this Release

Erich Wolfgang Korngold greatly revised the comic operetta A Night in Venice by Johann Strauss (Jr.) on the basis of the libretto version by Ernst Marischka. The original Straussian version initially rapidly made its way around the world, with performances in the lands of the Danube monarchy as well as in Hamburg, Munich, and London and even in New York. Nevertheless, until the end of World War I it experienced only about five hundred performances, which means that it was clearly overshadowed by Die Fledermaus. Again and again the attempt was made to reinterpret the text with interventions revising its content. took an additional step in 1923, when he not only adapted the text but also changed the original instrumentation and integrated inserts into the work from other operettas by Strauss, for example, from Simplicius (1880). For several reasons Korngold’s revised version was a success when it was performed at the Theater an der Wien on 25 October 1923: the stage set was lavish and magnificent, the new orchestration displayed tonal sophistication, and the great Richard Tauber was heard in the role of the Duke in quest of erotic adventures.

About this Release

Our gigantic edition of Carl Loewe’s complete song and ballad oeuvre proved to be a great success and revealed a genuine cosmos of great dramatic works and enthralling genre miniatures. However, it is known only to a few that Loewe not only composed some six hundred songs and ballads but also produced . In 1831 the Allgemeine musikalische Zeitung described his Piano Trio or Grand Trio op. 12 as ‘magnificent, finely invented, sustained, and intelligently developed.’ Robert Schumann expressed himself in a similar vein: ‘It is perhaps one of the most fundamentally genuine and most imaginative works by Loewe, one of those worthiest of the best master. Every trio circle must have it.’ In his last instrumental work, the Duo Espagnôla for viola and piano, the composer once again ventured onto national terrain and took with him the viola as a special expressive means conveying the Spanish character. The work is melodious throughout and shows both instruments in their best light. The Scottish Pictures for clarinet and piano from Loewe’s late period are demanding genre scenes inspired by the composer’s interest in the Scottish landscape and the country’s vicissitudinous history.

About this Release

Reinhard Keiser’s Der blutige und sterbende Jesus is not only the very first German Passion oratorio but also a highly suspenseful contribution to the Passion season. Lost for many years, it is now available for listening on CD in the revised version of 1729. The dramatic and musical design of Keiser’s work is astonishing. As in the Italian oratorio type that gained currency after 1700, there is no Evangelist or other narrator, which means that the work has a purely dramatic structure. Even though Keiser’s librettist Christian Friedrich Hunold, whose pseudonym was ‘Menantes’, did not cite any one of the four Evangelists word for word in his adaptation of the Passion narrative, it is quite evident that the poetic elaboration is (primarily) modelled on Luther’s translation of the Gospel of Matthew. As might be expected, Hunold and Keiser based their work on the dramatic means of the opera typical of their times while working on the one hand with contrasts between short, often homophonic five- part choirs of the two different groups of participants and on the other hand with multipart, interior monologues by the main characters.

About this Release

As Adolf Tegtmeier, the alter ego of Jürgen von Manger, knew quite well, overtures exercise an important function in the opera: ‘They begin, you see, right off with the curtain and start by playing all the melodies in a row, everything that happens to come up later. But this is just to give you the chance to familiarize yourself with the music. And of course it’s important … so that later on you don’t get such a big shock’. The orchestral overtures brought together on the present recording make the listener eager to hear each of the particular works following them. Even those who do not recognize the fine details of their design will enjoy the inexhaustible wealth of their melodies, the irresistible rhythms and lyricisms, and the skilled details of their instrumentation. In their entirety the works on this CD invite us to approach Jacques Offenbach’s sumptuous oeuvre by way of unknown paths on the occasion of the two hundredth anniversary of his birth – without having to worry about ‘later getting such a big shock’.

About this Release

Duo Åstrand/Salo follow up their first instalment of sonatas by Friedrich Kuhlau with a selection of some of the composer’s most impressive works for violin and piano. Included is what some consider the first Danish violin sonata in the Romantic style, a work that glances towards the composer’s idol Beethoven but contains plenty of individual spice and allure. It is followed by sonatas in all but name, the Trois Duos brillants from late in Kuhlau’s career. They are brilliant, as the title suggests – three varied, evocative snapshots of the great cosmopolitan of Denmark’s Golden Age.

About this Release

The prizewinning Copenhagen Piano Quartet presents works by composers cosmopolitan and conservative, but each brimming with charm. German-born Friedrich Kuhlau (1786-1832) declared his Piano Quartet No. 3 ‘my best to date’, speaking of a large-scale work of drama offset by grace and highlighting the composer’s contrapuntal gift. A century later, the C minor quartet by the ‘Danish Saint-Saëns’ Otto Malling (1848-1915) presents a perfect picture of this master craftsman’s clarity and concision while showing tantalizing signs of his sensuality too.

About this Release

This release has been sourced from the Richard Itter archive of ‘live’ BBC recordings. The collection is very important for collectors because it has never been on the market before. Following the archive’s launch in October 2017 with successive releases featuring Beecham, Böhm, Cantelli, Casadesus, Karajan, Menuhin, Monteux, du Pré, Klemperer, Rostropovich and Walter, it has received universal praise from both the classical media and record collectors for the excellent sound and performances. Carlo Maria Giulini’s celebrated studio recording of Le nozze di Figaro was recorded in September 1959 following a live performance at the Royal Festival Hall a few days earlier. Nearly 18 months later on 6th February 1961 there was another RFH performance but with a substantially different cast from that on disc. Only two roles – the Countess (Elisabeth Schwarzkopf) and Antonio (Piero Cappuccilli) – were sung by the same artists.

Rob Cowan wrote in Gramophone about the first volume (ICAC 5148) featuring Sir Thomas Beecham: ‘numerous live Beecham releases have appeared over the last few years, some more successful than others (in both recording and performance terms), but this collection is certainly one of the best’. This second volume continues with rare performances which as far as is known have never been made available before covering a period from 1952 to 1959.

About this Release

Rautavaara began work on an unaccompanied mass, the ‘Missa a cappella’, in March 2009, its first performance taking place on November 25th 2011 at Jacobikerk, Utrecht, by the Netherlands Radio Choir under Celso Antunes. ‘Our Joyful’st Feast’ came into being only a few years earlier when the Helsinki Chamber Choir and Nils Schweckendiek commissioned a choral work to be performed at the European Broadcasting Union Christmas concert. Rautavaara decided to set texts by two English Renaissance poets: two extracts from Shakespeare and a section from an extensive Christmas poem by George Wither, a contemporary of the Bard.

Le Concert de l’Hostel Dieu, Franck-Emmanuel Comte

ICSM 012 1 CD 03/05/19 ICSM RECORDS

About this Release

Since the middle of the 18th century, Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater has been an absolute triumph all over Europe. Its initial success in Lyon can be accredited to the booming musical societies. Franck-Emmanuel Comte found a very unusual manuscript of the Stabat Mater. This manuscript is presented in an unexpected arrangement. Apart from a few minor modifications in the instrumental parts, the second solo voice part is entrusted to a baritone (without a doubt because of the disappearance of the castrati), while the fugues and verse O quam tristisare arranged for five voices. Thus, the Latin poem takes on a whole new dimension, gaining theatricality and dramatic emphasis.

About this Release

Adam Summerhayes presents Stone Soup. Our intention was to create an album of bodhran and fiddle music but inspired by the folk tale of the ‘Stone Soup’, we began to assemble raw ingredients for the appropriate additional sounds, seeking to include instruments that I had yet to experiment with in the recording. By incorporating a variety of instruments and sounds, the result is linked improvisations that appear almost as a pre-mediated through composed work, a gradual emotional journey, a story felt but not fold.

About this Release

Vireo: The Spiritual Biography of a Witch’s Accuser, composed and conceived by Lisa Bielawa on a libretto by Erik Ehn and directed by Charles Otte, will be released as a double package on DVD and CD by Orange Mountain Music. Vireo is an opera in 12 episodes, created for television and online viewing. The opera removes the set limitations of a staged opera, visiting locations across the country – Alcatraz Prison, a monastery on the Hudson River, an abandoned train station in Oakland, the California Redwoods. An orchestra in the pit is replaced with world-class musicians on camera, inside the action. The eponymous heroine Vireo, played by Rowen Sabala, is a fourteen-year-old girl genius entangled in the historic obsession with female visionaries, as witch-hunters, early psychiatrists, and modern artists have defined them. Vireo was shot on location from New York’s Hudson River Valley to California’s Redwood forests.

ORC100097 1 CD 03/05/19 ORCHID CLASSICS

About this Release

To mark the 60th birthday of British composer Jonathan Dove, Orchid Classics presents an album devoted to his extraordinary orchestral music, performed by the BBC Philharmonic. Under the direction of Timothy Redmond, the BBC Philharmonic performs works which span nearly two decades, from The Ringing Isle of 1997, to Gaia Theory, premiered at the BBC Proms in 2014. The Ringing Isle was inspired by Handel’s observation about the bells he heard upon arriving in England; Dove uses bell-ringing patterns and allusions to Gaunt’s famous ‘scepter’d isle’ speech from Shakespeare’s Richard II. Other highlights include Run to the Edge, a thrilling, vibrant work bursting with energy and colour; Airport Scenes, extracted from Dove’s comic opera, Flight; and Hojoki, a setting of a Japanese text which, appropriately, reflects on the significance of reaching the age of 60, and is sung here by countertenor Lawrence Zazzo, who gave the work’s premiere.

About this Release

If the legend of the ‘sermon to the birds’ constitutes a magnificent example of narrative art on the piano, for this way of expressing extra-musical ideas solely with notes the three series of Années de Pèlerinage would seem to be a salient cycle in Liszt’s oeuvre. These ‘years of pilgrimage’ contain a total of 26 character pieces, forming a kind of musical diary for Liszt’s years of travelling. After the very successful release of Volume 1 (C944182) the young and talented italian pianist Francesco Piemontesi takes care of the second part, “Italy”. Again, an impressive movie accompanies the pianist on his trip throug Italy, on the traces of Franz Liszt. This DVD shows not only the beauty of the landscape but also interesting statements of Francesco Piemontesi about his actual recording.

About this Release

Hardly any other singer was more associated with and devoted to the nigh 300 songs by the Austrian composer Hugo Wolf than Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. Utterly convinced by the richness of Wolf’s oeuvre, Fischer-Dieskau took Wolf’s previously hardly heeded songs to many stages throughout the world. Reger was frowned upon as an ‘awkward traditionalist’ and ‘piece worker’, but Reger’s songs show a completely different, moving and profound side of the composer, who takes a significant position in the song composition of the turn of the century. Even Fischer-Dieskau did not devote himself to Reger exactly frequently, unlike his downright encyclopaedic approach in other fields. In his recording of a number of particularly fine gems among Reger’s orchestral songs, he was supported by Gerd Albrecht. The outcome is an artistic symbiosis of the highest quality, testifying to a passion and ardency that can be found seldom: a veritable sound document!

About this Release

Like so many Bohemian composers, the eastern Bohemian Vanhal had moved to Vienna early in his career and can thus be viewed as a member of the select core of composers consisting of Haydn, Salieri, Mozart and Beethoven, to whom we owe Viennese classicism. The Missa Solemnis is noteworthy not just for its quality and opulence, but surprises the listener above all with three prolonged concert solo arias. By comparison, Vanhal’s Stabat Mater seems formally more conservative in its usual alternation between choir parts and solo numbers. It is above all the rich melodic imagination that is captivating.

Rafael Kubelík: The Munich Symphonic Recordings

Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, Rafael Kubelík

C981115 15 CD 10/05/19 ORFEO

About this Release

From 1961–79, Kubelík was principal conductor of the Symphony Orchestra of Bavarian Radio in Munich. He had found there his new musical home. He led the BR Symphony Orchestra to new heights, developing a unique sound and performance culture in a perfect diversity of repertoire from Baroque music up to free tonal Expressionism and to Karl Amadeus Hartmann and Benjamin Britten. As a musician, his prime directive was lyrical phrasing as well as clear and conscious articulation of the harmonic tensions and the vitality of the rhythmical and metric flow. He always had all these elements in mind, seeking to balance them. And Kubelík loved the gorgeous, lush sound, but never at the price of diaphanousness. This CD Edition gives us a detailed overview about his legendary interpretations and is also a time document of his long time working period in the city of Munich.

Cracow Singers, Marc Lewon, Agnieszka Budzińska-Bennett

RK3801 1 CD 03/05/19 RAUMKLANG

About this Release

SUB URSAE can be translated as ‘under the northern sky’. This expression comes from a popular sixteenth- century prayer for the Commonwealth and the king, with a melody by Wacław of Szamotuły (ca. 1520/25–ca. 1560), the most known Polish Renaissance composer and the birst to be published abroad alongside works by the most acclaimed contemporary European composers. The anthem, calling upon Christ to protect the subjects of Sigismund Augustus, could have been sung in times of war and peace by both Catholics and Protestants, by Poles and Lithuanians, joined in the common praise of the splendour of the happy and prosperous land under the sky of the Great Bear (Ursa Major). The Cracow Singers directed by Basle specialist Agnieszka Budzińska-Bennett and accompanied by Marc Lewon (lute), present the birst ever complete songs of the Renaissance master: Latin motets, Polish monophonic and polyphonic hymns as well as the premiere reconstruction of recently discovered fragments Wacław’s Lamentationes, long thought to be lost.

About this Release

Acclaimed harpsichordist Guillermo Brachetta returns to Resonus to begin a major recording of the complete Pièces de Clavecin by the French Baroque master, François Couperin. Often wistful and valedictory in tone, the fourth and final book of this landmark collection of keyboard music was completed at the very end of Couperin’s life and in the grip of failing health. Containing many vivid musical representations of real characters, Couperin’s grace and elegance in writing for this instrument is evident to the very end.

About this Release

Bill Coleman, was part of a select group of inspired players who not only enhanced every jazz setting in which he found himself but also, somehow, made his demanding instrument sound easy to play. Coleman’s effortless, silver-toned contributions to great recording sessions are never overlooked by jazz connoisseurs. But for newer arrivals to the music this CD collection conclusively re-illustrates that the contributions to jazz discography of this ‘American in Paris’ were – and are – as gracefully executed and creatively strong as any Gene Kelly routine in or beyond his immortal movie.

About this Release

Blenda (1876) composed by Per August Ölander, often regarded as both the crowning achievement and closing of the circle in Ölander’s artistic development. Blenda portrays the legend of a Swedish heroine, who led the rural women of Värend in an attack on the Danish army. Blenda demonstrates the depth and breadth of Ölander’s musical talent, as well as a unique and culturally transcending eclecticism. The music is well entrenched within its own cultural context whilst at the same time displays a creative blend of other sources of inspiration.

Johann Sebastian Bach Stay, ye angels - Cantatas

Gaechinger Cantorey, Lenneke Ruiten, Anke Vondung, Benedikt Kristjánsson, Peter Harvey, Hans-Christoph Rademann

ACC30466 1 CD 10/05/19 ACCENTUS MUSIC

About this Release

Two cantatas written by Johann Sebastian Bach for Michaelmas in 1726 and 1728/29 respectively build the framework of this recording. They tell of the Archangel Michael‘s victory over Satan. At the center of the cantata ‘Es erhub sich ein Streit’ is the tenor aria ‘Bleibt, ihr Engel’ (Stay, ye angels), which gives this recording its name. Embedded in these two magnificent, dramatic works with timpani and trumpets are two more intimate cantatas that sing the song of peace. In the introductory Sinfonia and the two alto arias of ‘Gott soll allein mein Herze haben’, the organ is highlighted as a virtuoso solo instrument - perfect for the Hildebrandt organ in the Naumburg Wenceslas Church, which lends a special color to this recording. The final chorale contains a message that can also be found in the subsequent solo cantata ‘Friede sei mit Dir and can be regarded as a statement of the entire program: ‘So that we love one another from our hearts and remain with one mind in peace’. Recorded at the Stadtkirche Sankt Wenzel, Naumburg, in September 2018, in co-production with Deutschlandfunk Kultur.

Janne Rättyä, Patrick Demenga

ABCD441 1 CD 03/05/19 ALBA

About this Release

On Tango Ladeado accordionist Janne Rättyä leads the listener into the world of tango with the assistance of cellist Patrick Demenga on the final track. This album includes rare, previously unreleased tango gems from various composers from 1757 to 2017. It represents a collection of some of Rättyä’s favorite tangos among those which became the backbone of his concert programs, the pièces de résistance. Classical accordionist Rättyä went through an inner battle before diving into the project, for he had previously avoided any association with popular music genres like the tango. Privately, though, he did enjoy slumming in this genre once in a while, and slowly he began to discover tangos written by serious composers, some of which found their way onto regular recital programs. In the years following, a number of new tangos emerged and several composers contributed their own arrangements or suggested arrangements for him to work on. In the older tangos of his repertoire the original tango idiom is clearly present.

Symphony No. 1; Pictures and Tales

Deutsche Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz, Jürgen Bruns

C5365 1 CD 10/05/19 CAPRICCIO

About this Release

‘I have always viewed Dr. Weigl as one of the best composers of the old generation; one of those continuing the illustrious Viennese tradition’ – Arnold Schönberg. This statement indicated that Weigl remained faithful to the late-Romantic aesthetic and use of tonality, shunning the more progressive contemporary trends being explored at the turn of the 20th century, as might be found in the music of Zemlinsky, Reznicek or Franz Schmidt. Weigl’s style is well reflected in this programme that pairs the first of his six symphonies (written in 1908) with Pictures and Tales, a suite for small orchestra written in 1922. In the autumn of 1938, Weigl emigrated from Vienna via France and Great Britain to the USA, where he initially had to accept musical odd jobs, gave private lessons, and was finally able to work as a teacher at different musical institutes such as the Boston Conservatory and the Philadelphia Academy of Music.

About this Release

Joseph Martin Kraus, also known as the Swedish Mozart, has for many years been a shadowy figure in music history. Gluck and even Joseph Haydn saw ‘a real genius’ in his virtuosic works that carried the stamp of early Romanticism. They were not mistaken. His position as composer at the Swedish court under Gustav III made it possible to enjoy a fixed income and unfettered creativity. This collection gives us an overall musical impression of his compositions in all genres: from the incidental music to Amphitryon to the virtuosic Italian cantatas, his dozen symphonies, and the early string quartets.

Alexander Brailowsky

DACOCD336-339 4 CD 03/05/19 DANACORD

About this Release

At the end of the 1920’s and the beginning of the 30’s, the German gramophone company Polydor issued a number of much sought-after Brailowsky recordings, and even today the technical quality of these recordings as regards to resonance and tonality is astonishing. These old Berlin recordings, the matrices of which were unfortunately destroyed during the 1940-45 bombardment, must surely be some of the most inspiring; here the commercial 78 rpm pressings are presented in brand new digital transfers preserving the art of the ‘Keyboard Giant’ Alexander Brailowsky, a Chopin player of rare distinction renowned for his prodigious technique and beautiful tone.

About this Release

Named by Musical America as the 2018 ‘Composer of the Year’, Grammy-winning composer Mason Bates is widely renowned for his pioneering practice of creating music for conventional performing forces enhanced by electronic sounds. Of the two works presented in this remarkable album, Mass Transmission—in its world premiere recording—is a particularly winning example of Bates’ use of ‘electronica’, blended here with music for mixed choir and organ. Sirens, lacking electronica, still achieves mesmerizing vocal effects through its complex scoring for 12-part a cappella choir.

DDA25182 1 CD 10/05/19 DIVINE ART

About this Release

Unfairly named ‘The Lady with the Hammer’ for her uncompromising use of massive thunderous chords and ostinato rhythms, Ustvolskaya was a pupil of Shostakovich but forged her own unique way into many genres. Recently, artists have concentrated, as here, on bringing out the richness of the works and their innate lyricism. This album includes all of the composer’s music for violin and piano in two major works – the Sonata and the Duet. Russian violinist Evgeny Sorkin was a child prodigy and performed for Isaac Stern at the age of 10 and was compared at 16 to David Oistrakh by no less than Yehudi Menuhin. He moved to Australia and balanced teaching at Sydney Conservatory with a busy recital schedule. Natalia Andreeva is a Russian pianist who is currently Lecturer in Piano at the University of Sydney, Australia. Her 2015 recording of the complete solo piano music of Galina Ustvolskaya was very well received; she is a pianist of consummate skill who can express the power and lyricism which exist side by side in these works.

About this Release

Nicola Vaccaj belonged to the Neapolitan School. He was a pupil of Paisiello and a contemporary of Rossini, whose fame somewhat obscured his own. But he was well enough known and appreciated during his day that an extract from the last Act of his Giulietta e Romeo was chosen as a substitute for the same aria in Bellini’s I Capuleti e I Montecchi for an 1832 performance. This arrangement remained common practice until the end of the 19th century. It’s hard to believe, therefore, that Vaccaj’s most notable success has been neglected for such a long time, since it is “an opera that could easily hold its own among the better-known works in the bel canto canon. It has a taut plot, with a strong libretto written by Romani, and is full of well-constructed ensemble pieces.” (Operawire)

About this Release

This album is the third volume of Tartini’s works for violin and basso continuo, adding another significant recording to Dynamic’s releases of music by the Baroque composer. The performers are the duo Črtomir Šiškovič (violin) and Luca Ferrini (harpsichord), the same artists as on the first two volumes (CDS7744 and CDS7775). Both musicians are acclaimed specialists in this repertoire. The sonatas recorded here are taken from the manuscripts numbered 1905. This rare recording is currently not matched elsewhere on the market.

About this Release

This album features new arrangements for harpsichord and guitar of Bach’s Six Trio Sonatas for Organ, BWV 525-530. Luigi Accardo and Francesco Molmenti dig deeply into Bach’s historical background and create a musical language of their own.

About this Release

Reflections of the soul, fruits of pleasure, places of longing: we find all of these when we listen to Eva Resch’s new GENUIN release. Following the two productions Being Beauteous and Insights, both nominated for the German Record Critics’ Award, Eva Resch and pianist Eric Schneider devote themselves to songs that offer remarkable contrasts to the violent, even disastrous times when they were written. The program features cycles by Ullmann, Schoenberg, Webern, and Schreker. Eva Resch’s full-bodied and supple voice and Eric Schneider’s precise piano playing do complete justice to this shimmering, virtuoso and at the same time almost sensual and drunken literature. Enthusiastically recommended repertoire from a forgotten era!

About this Release

Freude, schöner Götterfunken!’ (Joy, fair sparks of the gods) seems to be the cry of the fifth and penultimate GENUIN CD by the Camerata Limburg of the complete recording of Schubert’s works for male choir. The title of the program is ‘Elysium’, which says it all. The CD is a pleasurable stroll through heavenly realms: known and unknown, from poems by Schiller, Klopstock and many, many other wonderful poets. The interpretation is on par with the entire collection: an immaculate ensemble sound and an interpretation wonderfully worked out by conductor Jan Schumacher and his masters. The only drawback? The next CD in autumn will be the last of this series.

About this Release

Young violinist Liv Migdal ventures a journey to the limits of the speakable, playable, and tangible: the winner of numerous international prizes (including at the Ruggiero Ricci Competition Salzburg and Hindemith Competition Berlin) performs music by Bach, Bartók, and refugee from Germany Paul Ben-Haim. What could be more fragile than Liv Migdal’s lonely violin playing Bach, and what more existentially violent than the same instrument with Bartók? A true discovery is the work of Israel’s national composer Ben-Haim: a firestorm of energy, a melancholy meditation on lost happiness. A fabulous violinist presents a bold program!

About this Release

From the nature sounds of the opening to the edgy “heavy metal” of the conclusion: this GENUIN release by the Lake Brass Ensemble is a production full of good humor and meaty sounds! About this Release

Humour in music is the theme of this album by the 25-year-old pianist Hanna Bachmann from Austria, who plans debuts in the Berlin Philharmonic and concerts in the UK and US next season, and whom the conductor Kirill Petrenko attested “great musicality, creativity, high technical ability, fine sound and a matured personality”. The spectrum of variety of this program spans from the childlike cheerfulness of Mozart (Variations on “A Woman is the Most Delightful Thing” K. 613) to the profound wit and deliberate irony of Beethoven (“Diabelli Variations” Op. 120) to the pungent laughter of Prokofiev (“Sarcasm” Op. 17).

About this Release

In 2005 Helene Kenyeri, oboe, Mirjam Schiestl, clarinet and Marion Biber-Janda, bassoon came together to form the ensemble Trio Mignon Vienna. This special kind of ensemble first established itself as independent chamber music formation in France at the beginning of the 20th century, when renowned composers such as Henri Tomasi, Eugene Bozza and Jean Francaix, whose works are featured on this CD, wrote for this special cast. Besides arrangements of Baroque and Renaissance repertoire, another focal point of the young musicians’ artistic work constitutes contemporary music by (Austrian) composers such as Thomas Heinisch and Helmut Hödl, whose works also appear on this album. Above all, it is the passion for the beautiful, enchanting and inspiring sound of this combination of instruments that from the start provided impulses to the ensemble for conveying music to the young and elderly.

About this Release

The great Russian violinist Elena Denisova presents a solo album which centers around the three sonatas by Ivan Khandoshkin (1747–1804), who is little known in our latitudes and also known as “the Russian Paganini”. These virtuoso works are influenced by classical and rococo, but also folk music. Further works for solo violin include the Caprices No. 14 and No. 24 by Niccolo Paganini and Fritz Kreisler’s “Recitative & Scherzo”. The title of this album “Obsession” stems from the title of the first movement of the second solo sonata by Eugène Ysaÿe, which he dedicated to Jacques Thibaud. In general, according to Elena Denisova this CD is dedicated to “composers who were primarily outstanding violinists”.

About this Release

This fourth volume in Nicholas Walker’s complete edition of Balakirev’s piano music is structured around his three Scherzos, which take us from the youthful influence of Chopin and Liszt in the First Scherzo, to the music of his prolific final decade, from which the Second Scherzo is one of his finest compositions. Balakirev’s interest in Spanish music was kindled by his mentor Glinka, creating surprisingly authentic sounding textures and rhythms, and the programme is topped with the elegantly masterful poetry of the two Valse-Caprices.

Lopes-Graça transformed traditional songs into poetic and hard-edged statements, helping to create a ‘national collective spirit’ that would not be bowed by dictatorship. Vasques-Dias’s approach to folk culture is based on more personal feelings and emotions, recalling the countryside of his childhood and its landscapes today.

About this Release

Distinguished Hungarian composer Sándor Balassa’s philosophy on his music is that it ‘has to be whole, beautiful, interesting and appealing; as natural as if it were this way since the beginning of time, and so that anyone can pick it up with a feeling of joy.’ Balassa’s uniquely sophisticated textures, timbres and lyrical style can be heard here in pieces for young pianists, remarkable works originally written for cimbalom, and in the Baroque references and sweeping momentum of the Szonatina No. 1. This is the first of three volumes of Balassa’s complete piano music.

Ann-Helena Schlüter

HC18090 1 CD 03/05/19 HANSSLER CLASSIC

About this Release

My own music is influenced by the music of Bach. Having studied in the “Bach city” of Leipzig, fallen in love with his fugues as a child and won with his Preludes in the Jugend musiziert competition, achieved my first Bach cycle with the Goldberg Variations, then I was moved more and more deeply by the Credo, the inner conviction, in Bach’s music. My imaginative powers, my musical energy (timbres, sounds, creativity, and poetry) must be imbued with this richness. New music looks quite different from what it was in Bach’s day (some even say it is all philosophy now, no melodies, notes or harmonies required). If modern music is still to be music, even today, and if it is still to enrich people’s lives, a thing of value that they can and will remember, then Bach’s store of wealth can always come to the aid of us composers. And so it is that J.S. Bach, who never left Germany and spent so long in Leipzig for want of a better position, today more than ever embraces the whole world with a web of his music, in all the places he never travelled to, whether Spain, Franconia, Hesse, Sweden, or far beyond Europe. (Ann-Helena Schlüter)

AMERICAN SOUL: ...from Broadway to Paris is the title of Duo Rosa’s second opus, featuring art songs, Broadway melodies and cabaret tunes. To grasp the audience’s attention and hold them spellbound, the duo has selected a series of highly popular songs combined with less well-known classical melodies.

KL1529 1 CD 03/05/19 KLANGLOGO

About this Release

With his compositions for keyboard instruments, Pachelbel left the type of instrument, on which each work could be played, open to the musician. Thus, Márton Borsányi had to consider carefully whether he should play these pieces on the harpsichord or the organ. For those pieces where the virtuoso chose the harpsichord, he is playing on a reproduction of the Mayer harpsichord from 1619. Where the organ is his choice of instrument, he is playing on the euphonious Deutschmann organ in the Kálvin Square Reformed Church in Budapest. Borsányi presents not only a historically accurate interpretation but also one of exceptional musicality and sensitivity.

Many great composers flourished writing for its churches, publishers and musical amateurs, and this piano recital illustrates what a rich diversity of music was born here. J. S. Bach was probably Leipzig’s most famous resident, and his association with Leipzig is shown in his daring Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue in D minor. Felix Mendelssohn not organised funding for a new conservatoire, but also spearheaded the movement that rediscovered the works of J. S. Bach. Edvard Grieg’s formal musical training was at the Leipzig Conservatoire; and Neils Gade was invited by Mendelssohn to be his assistant conductor, as well as teaching at the Leipzig Conservatoire. Johannes Brahms was introduced to Leipzig by a friend or Robert Schumann, and Brahms gave piano recitals in the city. This recital uses a Feurich piano which dates from 1909, which was manufactured in Leipzig.

NMP1066 1 BOOK 03/05/19 NIMBUS MUSIC PUBLISHING

About this Release

At the core of Richard Blackford’s Pietà is a setting of the Stabat Mater; but it also includes two poignant poems by the celebrated Russian Anna Akhmatova from Requiem. The poems echo the words in Stabat Mater reflecting the grief of a mother for her son. Her struggle is immortalised in ‘Requiem’, her most famous work. Alternating between elegy, lamentation and witness. When the Bournemouth Symphony Chorus studied the work for the first time, conductor Gavin Carr wrote: ‘It is so compact, and so powerful: the intensity is incredible, and the release at the end is remarkable.’

About this Release

It was the conductor Wilhelm Furtwangler who first gave Gottlob Frick the nickname “Der schwarzeste Bass”. This accolade has been picked up time and again, gone through various manifestations, and became a sort of trademark of the German bass Gottlob Frick. That said, the attribute “black” is often applied to define the vocal range of a basso profundo’s ability to produce sonorous deep notes. However, the definition of “black bass” means far more than that: it applies primarily to the deep, dark timbre, the rich and sonorous sound and the lasting flexibility of the voice even in the deep registers, paired with strength, momentum, natural resonance and abundant expression in the entire vocal range.

About this Release

Unlike the last Karl Böhm CD box with gramophone recordings of overtures and concert pieces (Edition Staatskapelle Dresden Vol. 43) the recordings in this new CD box are all radio broadcasts. The exciting thing is that the Schubert Fifth Symphony is one of the earliest radio magnetic tape recordings that we have. The use of magnetic tape opened up a new and more varied world of sound to the broadcasting technicians. Whereas music programmes had previously broadcast longer works from discs playing for three or four minutes, involving constant changes of disc, the broadcasting engineers now had a “sound scribe” and the associated “magnetic tape” medium that would record and transmit recordings lasting up to 20 minutes per tape plate. That meant that complete movements of symphonies could be recorded and played without a break. The 1942 recording of Schubert’s Symphony No. 5 presented here is a priceless early audio document, surely the first attested Magnetophone recording by the Dresden Staatskapelle.

About this Release

Ekaterina Derzhavina records ‘Variations & Pieces for Piano’, a double disc with Haydn classics. The release of Haydn’s Complete Piano Sonatas on 9 CDs in 2013 was critically acclaimed throughout the world and nominated 2014 for the International Classical Music Award. The Boston Globe, USA, wrote: “Ekaterina Derzhavina’s name was new to me, but this 9-CD set of Haydn’s complete piano sonatas should broaden her recognition considerably. Her playing is elegant, stylish, and above all imaginative, showing just how creative the composer was ... her feel for Haydn’s originality comes through brilliantly.”

About this Release

A gorgeous new recording from the PaTRAM Institute! They are rising choral stars whose debut album (Chesnokov: Teach Me Thy Statutes (FR-727SACD) recently garnered a Grammy® nomination for Best Choral Performance. The music performed on this new recording of Russian Orthodox choral music in the English language was written by Dr. Kurt Sander. Conductor Peter Jermihov writes: ‘The Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom by Kurt Sander is unique in several respects. Within the body of repertoire contained in the Russian-based jurisdictions of North America (Moscow Patriarchate, Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia, and the Orthodox Church in America), it is the first and only complete setting of the Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom in English. Rooted in the 19th Century Russian models of such masters as Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, Gretchaninoff, and others, Sander’s Liturgy grows out of the monumental choral edifices of these masters and rightfully belongs in their midst’.

About this Release

“For me, tradition does not mean persistence, but transformation and growth. It might seem that a composer who still pays homage to tonality remains in such tradition-boundness out of comfort. It turns out, however, that the pursuit of tonal order constantly challenges him with new questions and decisions for which there are no recipes’. With his commitment to tonality, Müller-Zürich seemed to justify itself at a time when the avant- garde after the Second World War vilified all sound and harmony. In fact, however, his works are neither epigonal nor even retrogressive, but have their very own tone, which, a quarter of a century after his death, must be rediscovered. His large-scale string works (quintet with 2 violas 1919 & quartet 1921) are lush, colorful sound paintings full of passion and sophistication that can compete with Reger, Mahler and young Strauss. The later string trio from 1950 shines as a virtuoso, neoclassical bravura piece. With these three first recordings on CD, casalQuartett and Razvan Popovici set a magnificent sounding monument to the great Swiss.”

About this Release

Just like Johann Sebastian Bach before him, Ludwig van Beethoven played a significant role in the development of the cello. His six sonatas for cello and piano, three cycles of variations and the Triple Concerto all enhanced the instrument’s expressive scope to an extent that has not been bettered to date. With his unparalleled ability to endow the instrument with highly lyrical and elegantly cantabile qualities, he blazed the trail for composers who would follow him. So in what way and to what extent did Beethoven’s last sonata, the through- composed and visionary op. 102, no. 2, influence Johannes Brahms and Richard Strauss, two composers with such very different and idiosyncratic styles? The present album takes listeners on a journey through the German Romantic repertoire encompassing the power of tradition, the effect of original ideas and the ramifications of the innovative. In his last Sonata for cello and piano, Beethoven breaks with the traditions of the genre, as if he wanted to appeal to future generations. When this met with incomprehension in his contemporaries, he simply responded: ‘You will come to understand’.

Philippe Entremont

SM311 1 CD 03/05/19 SOLO MUSICA

About this Release

In a world sometimes tired of contemplating its own treasures, a plethora of discography with immediate and commonplace access can make the release of a new recording dedicated to some of Beethoven’s 32 sonatas surprising. More particularly, the choice made by an artist such as Philippe Entremont, after 70 years of a phenomenal career, to focus on one of the Viennese Master’s most recorded parts, reflects the complexity and intensity governing the relationship between the performer and the work, the relationship between his instrument and the orchestral aspects of the writing. This year, the exceptional artist celebrates two anniversaries. 70 years on the international stage and his 85th birthday. The few sonatas on this CD, milestones in Beethoven’s oeuvre, are just a short list for the audience. For the very choice of the works testifies to a passionate commitment, a gourmet and jubilant approach to do justice, with style and elegance, to a long journey initiated in 1957, during a recording made at Pathé, nowhere to be found.

About this Release

20 years ago, Helen Buchholtz was an enigmatic unknown. In 1999, two suitcases containing around 250 music manuscripts were found, which have since become accessible to gender in the archive of Helen Buchholtz in CID | Fraen. Only by chance had they survived: the notes, packed in sacks after the death of the composer, has been saved from the fire by a nephew at the last minute ...Helen Buchholtz, daughter of a wealthy brewery owner, received early lessons in music. At the age of 36, she married a German doctor and moved with him to Wiesbaden. Widowed early, she returned to Luxembourg, where she frequented poets and musicians. There her music came to the performance. But in concerts or on the radio she was heard ... The double CD presents a selection of the best of her 51 songs and ballads, which are selectively placed in a dialogue with contemporary music: Inspired by Helen Buchholtz late Romantic music, Catherine Kontz, Albena Petrovic-Vratchanska, Stevie Wishart and Tatsiana Zelianko composed four new ones ‘Songs’. Film director Anne Schiltz also shot the documentary ‘Im Dialog mit Helen Buchholtz’.

About this Release

Hans Richter-Haaser (1912–1980) hailed from Braunschweig. He held a piano lectureship at the Braunschweig Academy before moving to Detmold. From there he pursued a busy concert career in Germany and abroad, especially in the USA. His specialist field was classical and early Romantic repertoire. Nikita Magaloff (1912– 1992) was born in St. Petersburg. After the October Revolution his family first moved to Finland and later to Paris. From 1949 Magaloff lived in Switzerland, where he taught at the Geneva Academy. He was not only a renowned Chopin interpreter, but also a keen chamber musician. The focus of Chopin’s concertos is always on the virtuosity of the soloist, whereas the orchestra’s function is to provide the accompaniment. Latterly, conductors tried to make the orchestration sound much more complex and colourful. This Hans Rosbaud recording, however, finds him scrupulously following the score’s original intentions, with single-instrument tonal colours especially shown to their best advantage.

About this Release

Halina Czerny-Stefańska was connected to the old Polish aristocratic family Schwarzenberg-Czerny. She was born in Kraków on 30 December 1922 into a family of musicians. Her mother was a pianist and her father, Stanislaw Schwarzenberg-Czerny, a pianist and piano teacher, who gave his daughter her first lessons. In 1934 she won the Alfred Cortot prize which enabled her to study with Cortot in Paris. In 1949, she was awarded the first prize at the international Chopin competition in Warsaw together with Bella Davidovich. Even though this award promoted the start of her artistic career, it did not guarantee international success. Halina Czerny-Stefańska owed her international recognition to her talent and to the fact that she was a hard worker. She performed in public until the end of her life, all the while maintaining her great form.

About this Release

When Edward Elgar first ventured into symphonic music with his Op. 55, he had just celebrated his fiftieth birthday. Fame had come to him only a few years earlier with the premiere of the Enigma Variations in June of 1899. Unusual harmonic idioms, sudden changes of tempo, energetic rhythms and often abrupt dynamic gradations are hallmarks of Elgar’s First Symphony. The tremendous success the work enjoyed at its premiere in December 1908, with the Hallé Orchestra conducted by Hans Richter, proved to be no fluke, and it soon began a march of triumph through the world’s concert halls. Elgar’s work marks the first real breakthrough for English symphonic music. Reviewers lauded it as the most noble work ever penned by an English composer.

About this Release

Kurt Weill was one of the most important composers of the first half of the 20th century. He can be regarded both as a German and an American composer in that he emigrated to America the year the Nazis came to power. Kurt Weill met Bertolt Brecht in 1927. They were around the same age and both desperately keen to modernise the theatre. They produced a number of works together, among them the famous Dreigroschenoper (1928); their last co-production was the choral ballet The Seven Deadly Sins. Weill created Quodlibet, which he himself defined as “light music”, in 1923. The orchestral suite is derived from his pantomime of the same name.

About this Release

It was in the mid-eighteenth century London that the eclectic figure of Felice Giardini (or Degiardino: Turin, 1716 – Moscow, 1796) made his first appearance. He was a violin virtuoso with eye-catching executive skills, conductor, composer, impresario in contact with leading intellectuals. His musical production is multifaced. He experimented mainly with duet, trio, string quartet. His music is a perfect mixture of Italian and German tradition (Johann Christian Bach, Johann Stamitz and Manheim School that has typical features of the “Style Galant”). Evidence of this can be found in the Six Duos for Two Violins Op. II (1751), dedicated to Prince Heinrich of Prussia. Giardini’s style is spontaneous, easy to listen to, characterised by freshness and lyricism cantabile, joyous naturalness and refinement. Generally, it appears to be an essential musical writing, coming back to the formal clarity and to the contrapuntal simplicity. It develops a great tonal sensibility, supported by a dynamic rhythmic structure: the pure melody, without ornaments, is becoming increasingly important.

About this Release

Artists who fit completely into their place and time, their schools and background of peers, are fairly plain sailing. The starting point is one and the same, like a word that begins in basic form before being overlaid with individual aesthetic, professional and productive connotations. It may not be that easy, but it certainly remains so. None of this applies to Luciano Simoni (1932-2010 who lived and thought in lofty style at Bologna, Italy, across the second half of the twentieth and into the twenty-first century without kowtowing to principles or any contemporary rules of art or life – which may be well and good, but are not to be taken on board acritically. Unlike many a colleague, Simoni approached classical music from every possible angle. Which of them, for example, threw themselves enthusiastically into sacred music? Simoni did, and among other things produced a full-scale Missa solemnis for chorus, orchestra and soloists. His fondness for chamber music was, of course, less unusual: he left some memorable scores such as those collected on the present CD whose programme includes three of the nine quartets and one trio for strings and piano.

About this Release

To journey into these works is like taking a stroll in an imaginary, flourishing middle-age garden where a multitude of contained aromas blend together to surprise and prepare the beholder to refine his senses. Just as the host of unique species within create marvel, so one is struck by the eclecticism that is at the core of this collection, starting from the different textures of which the works are made. The internationally acclaimed young composer Carlo Forlivesi moves in a geographical and temporal space led by electronic, orchestral, chamber music and ethnic instruments, digging the past of the ancient Latin hymns, Bach and Haydn, and exploring a traditional culture completely different and far from ours like the Japanese one. Vivid, multi-faceted thoughts lie underneath this music and reflect Forlivesi’s attitude towards life: deeply curious, inspired to research, tireless traveller and cosmopolitan soul (just note the six different languages in which the compositions are titled).

Since 2005 he lives in Germany and gives concerts and masterclasses there and abroad. His repertoire includes classical works of the European and Latin American guitar, as well as the folkloric music of South America and the Argentine Tango. Jaime B. About this Release

The term ‘hautboïstes’ can by no means be translated as ‘oboists’ or ‘oboe players’, since besides the mastery of various oboes and bassoons, skills on many other instruments were expected of them. The repertoire of the hautboistes ensembles included a wealth of diverse kinds of Gebrauchsmusik. They played dance music, marched in funeral processions, joined with the town musicians in cantata church services, and played whenever music was required at official events. A representative selection of such music, featuring compositions by Georg Philipp Telemann, is offered on this CD. The members of the ensemble “les hautboïstes de prusse,” founded in 1996 by Georg Corall, endeavor to bring out the tonal and technical characteristics of historical oboe instruments. Double reeds scraped in the historical manner are in many ways more flexible and versatile in terms of timbre and dynamics than their modern versions.

About this Release

Carl Loewe (1796–1869), known as ‘the north German Schubert’, is remembered today chiefly as a composer of ballads. Yet there is a considerable body of piano music that is strikingly innovative in content, expression and harmony, and it contains the germs of ideas later taken up by composers such as Wagner and Liszt – Loewe was unquestionably a brilliantly original talent, a major figure in ushering in the Romantic era.

About this Release

Heinrich Sutermeister (1910–95) belongs to the generation of Swiss composers after Bloch, Honegger, Martin and Schoeck. The runaway success of his operatic version of Romeo and Juliet – in the 1950s it was the most widely produced modern opera after Der Rosenkavalier – soon spread his reputation far afield, and conductors as prominent as Böhm, Karajan and Sawallisch championed his works. Although his star has waned in the quarter-century since his death, the four orchestral works recorded here – ranging from the dramatic suite he drew from that first Shakespearean operatic success via the easy-going charm of two lighter suites to his deeply felt response to the Swiss landscape – bring a salutary reminder of why his music appeals so directly to its audiences.

About this Release

The Swiss composer Émile Jaques-Dalcroze (1865–1950) is best remembered for his development of Eurhythmics, which teaches the appreciation of music through movement. But Jaques-Dalcroze, who studied with Delibes and Fauré in Paris and with Bruckner and Fuchs in Vienna, was a considerable composer in his own right, with operas, cantatas and orchestral works among his substantial output. His 20 Caprices and Rhythmic Studies constitute an important but hitherto unknown set of character-studies, combining a relaxed lyricism with technical challenges of considerable subtlety for the player. This release is the second of a project of three – each performed by a different pianist – presenting an unsuspected side of Jaques-Dalcroze’s musical activity.

About this Release

The organ music of Joan (or Juan) Cabanilles (1644–1712) is virtuosic and colourfully Baroque, and touched with a distinctively Spanish intensity. Cabanilles is claimed as the most prolific of all composers for the organ, and publication of his works, begun in 1927, has not caught up with his output. But the surviving manuscripts can be seriously corrupt, requiring extensive editing and sometimes even detailed recomposition. This recording – Volume Three of an ongoing series – therefore uses a number of new editions to present the music as never heard before, as close as possible to what the composer might have intended. It was made using the historic (1732) organ in the Basilica of Sant Jaume in Vila-real, Valencia.

About this Release

Stormy sounds of widely varying ‘wind quality’ blow through the pieces on the new CD by Edition Musikfabrik. In Steffen Schleiermacher’s ‘Das Tosen des staunenden Echos’ (The roar of the amazed echos) the paradox of a ‘roaring stillness’ unfolds in a kind of cantus firmus - echoing ritual recitations from Laos - which meanders amongst the various instruments and moves towards its finale with sonic force. Kaija Saariaho’s storm references are more literary in nature: Shakespeare’s play ‘The Tempest’ serves as a backdrop for her Songbook of the same name and provides the lyrics for the pieces sung finely nuanced by Olivia Vermeulen and Peter Schöne. In antagonisme contrôlé, by Michael Wertmüller, the storm takes place in the formal structure of the work, where the different temperatures of free jazz and new music collide: Peter Brötzmann - on of the leading free jazz artists today - together with Ensemble Musikfabrik’s percussionist, Dirk Rothbrust, on drums and Marino Pliakas on e-bass create a high pressure system to face the headwind of the full ensemble.

About this Release

The continuous change of timbres, lines and textures characterizes the three ensemble pieces on the portrait-CD of Lula Romero. Instrumental and vocal parts merge with the manifold interacting live electronics to fluctuating, surreal soundscapes. Sometimes transforming other sounds, sometimes acting as an autonomous sound producer, the live electronics are in first line constructing space. The composer considers spatial elements as an integral part of her compositions and relates them with musical structure and sound material. The ensemble installation ins Offene is – like Romero writes in the score preface – ‘a trial to superimpose different spaces and to blend them’. The recordings were produced in collaboration with the Deutschlandfunk and the SWR Experimentalstudio. Interpreters include the ensemble Vertixe Sonora, the Zafraan Ensemble and the vocalists Aki Hashimoto, Silke Evers and Noa Frenkel.

About this Release

The accordion virtuoso Teodoro Anzellotti, a pioneering interpreter of contemporary music, meet one of the most extraordinary composers of the musical world of the 18th century, an era when the ‘Roi Soleil’ (Sun King) resided in France and high-ranking men wore grey curly wigs. Anzellotti dedicated himself to harpsichord pieces that he selected personally, and he inspired some of today’s composers to deal with Rameau. And here the circle closes. Six contemporary accordion miniatures after Rameau were created in reflection with 21 works of Rameau’s baroque art. Teodoro Anzellotti: ‘There are always surprises … I never have seen such music before, not even written by Scarlatti, such turns, such surprises … does anyone believe that compositions like that were possible 300 years ago … that someone had the courage to risk music which was ahead of its time … to write down things that didn’t exist at that time, simply courageous … the forty years old Rameau was an avant- gardist in his time ... he was a revolutionary!’

About this Release

What makes a King? What makes a father? Shakespeare’s monumental history play travels to the heart of family, duty and country. This innovative film, recorded before a live audience, documents the Donmar Warehouse’s all-female stage production, adapted from William Shakespeare’s two plays about King Henry IV, Prince Hal and Falstaff. The bold, contemporary production is presented as if played by inmates of a women’s prison and was described by critics as ‘unforgettable’. The director for both stage and screen is Phyllida Lloyd, and Harriet Walter is Henry IV. The Donmar Shakespeare Trilogy began in 2012 with an all-female production of Julius Caesar led by Dame Harriet Walter. Set in a women’s prison, the production asked the question, “Who owns Shakespeare?” Two further productions followed: Henry IV in 2014 and The Tempest in 2016, all featuring a diverse company of women. The Trilogy enthralled theatre audiences in London and New York and was shared with women and girls in prisons and schools across the UK. The film versions were shot live in a specially built temporary theatre in King’s Cross in 2016.

About this Release

Verdi’s opera Attila takes as its starting point Attila’s plans to storm Rome with his army of Huns and the Romans’ attempts to prevent him. As with Nabucco and I Lombardi, Verdi spiced up the action with a number of patriotic choruses, guaranteeing that – against the background of the Italian movement for unification – the opera was a great success. ‘Michele Mariotti owes much to the fact that this evening became a celebration of voices’ (Opern-Kritik). Ildebrando D´Arcangelo is ‘perfect for the serious Verdi roles’, Fabio Sartori has a voice of immense brilliance’ (Opern-Kritik), ‘Simone Piazzola was an impressive Ezio’ (theoperacritic.com) and ‘the real warrior of this Attila is the soprano Maria José Siri … with her voice, touching each primordial sentiment in every note of the opera, she commanded ‘Attention’ from everybody’ (La Repubblica).

About this Release

Axel Köhler’s production of ‘Der Freischütz’ at the Dresden State Opera was described by Die Presse as “a minor miracle in Dresden”. In the words of the Salzburger Nachrichten, Köhler “scored a bullseye” with his sombre and satanic interpretation of Weber’s Romantic opera about love, temptation, souls sold to the Devil, obsession and faith. According to the Financial Times, Christian Thielemann and the Dresden Staatskapelle conjured up a sense of “mortal terror from the orchestra pit. […] Thielemann is in command of every detail. That makes for utterly gripping listening.”
