Ulster Orchestra, Howard Shelley

Howard Shelley and the Ulster Orchestra return for a second volume in Hyperion’s new Classical Piano Concerto series. The Seasons, Op. 37a; Grand in G major, Op. 37

Freddy Kempf

Pyotr Tchaikovsky composed one of the most popular piano concertos in the repertory, but in solo recital programmes his name is rarely seen. His output includes two large- scale – a youthful work in C sharp minor, and the Grand Sonata in G major recorded here. A work of big, public gestures, in the sonata Tchaikovsky keeps the lyrical ideas that came so naturally to him firmly under control. By contrast, lyricism was given free rein two years earlier, in the twelve pieces that make up The Seasons. As with much of his work in this genre, the ultimate model is Schumann: January, for example, combines hints of Schumannesque Innigkeit with Tatiana’s music in Eugene Onegin. Freddy Kempf, who made his acclaimed début recording with Schumann’s Carnaval and has demonstrated his versatility in programmes taking in Bach, Liszt and BIS2140 Stravinsky, now adds Tchaikovsky to his discography. £9.00 (Hybrid SACD)

Henri DUTILLEUX (1916-2013) Le Loup, complete ballet score (1953); Trois Sonnets de Jean Cassou; La Fille du Diable (1945-46), extracts from the film score; Quatre Mélodies for voice and orchestra (1941-43); Trois Tableaux symphoniques d’après Les Hauts de Hurlevent (1944-46) - Includes World Première Recordings Vincent Le Texier Orchestre National des Pays de la Loire, Pascal Rophé In the centennial year of Henri Dutilleux’s birth, the Orchestre National des Pays de la Loire and Pascal Rophé present a programme which focusses on works composed before 1954, and offers the opportunity to discover a less familiar but by no means negligible side of his creative activity. Several of the works BIS1651 on this disc are recorded for the first time in these versions, or indeed at all. Performed by the French £9.00 (Hybrid SACD) baritone Vincent Le Texier, Éloignez-vous – one of the Cassou settings – and Quatre Mélodies appear for the first time on disc in the version for orchestra. The complete score of the balletLe Loup only exists in a recording made in 1954, while the Trois Tableaux symphoniques and extracts from the film score La Fille du Diable are here made available on CD for the first time.

Johannes BRAHMS Variations on a Hungarian Melody, Op. 21 No. 2; Piano Pieces, Op. 76; Waltzes, Op. 39; Piano Pieces, Op. 118 Jonathan Plowright Critical acclaim for Jonathan Plowright’s two previous discs in his series of Brahms’s works for solo piano has been extensive. On his third disc Plowright presents the listener with two seemingly contradictory aspects of : the deeply serious and emotionally charged Piano Pieces Op. 118 and their precursor Op. 76 appear side by side with the unapologetic extroversion and scintillating verve of the 16 Waltzes Op. 39, and the flamboyant Variations on a Hungarian Melody. BIS2127 Brahms’s fascination with Hungarian gypsy music stemmed from his friendship with the violinist £9.00 (Hybrid SACD) Eduard Reményi, and found an outlet in several works, among which the Hungarian Dances are probably the most famous. The composer was also a friend and admirer of Johann Strauss II, and in his Op. 39 trespassed – with great success – into the domains of ’s ‘Waltz King’.

Anders HILLBORG Sirens; Beast Sampler; Cold Heat; O dessa ögon Hannah Holgersson, Ida Falk Winland, Eric Ericson Chamber Choir, Swedish Radio Choir Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Sakari Oramo, David Zinman, Esa-Pekka Salonen Sirens, the closing and culminating work on this disc, is Hillborg’s largest work to date in terms of both scoring and duration, and its emotional depth is unmatched in his output. Inspired by the dangerous yet alluring sirens in Homer’s Odyssey, Hillborg has constructed a score and libretto in which the sirens – two soprano soloists and a large mixed choir – with increasing desperation attempt to manipulate Ulysses. Performing this colourful programme is the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, joined BIS2114 by the sopranos Ida Falk Winland and Hannah Holgersson and two of ’s foremost choirs, the (Hybrid SACD) Eric Ericson Chamber Choir and the Swedish Radio Choir. The performances are led by three different £9.00 conductors: the eminent trio of Sakari Oramo, David Zinman and Esa-Pekka Salonen, dedicatees of the works they conduct here.

In three of these Beethoven uses themes of his own, including the Ruins of Athens Variations, Op. 76. The two remaining sets both use English themes; £9.00 (Hybrid SACD) Beethoven’s choice of God save the King and Rule Britannia may well reflect his often expressed respect for Britain – as well as his interest in the English market for sheet music.
