At the 16th meeting of the Animals Committee, the Secretariat informed the Committee that it had decided to review the implementation of all recommendations that have been formulated by the Committee in the context of Resolution Conf. 8.9 (Rev.) and that the Committee would be informed of the results of this review, which was expected to become available over the following 12 to 18 months. The Committee supported this initiative. 2. The Secretariat was requested to provide a list of animal species that were or had been subject to the Review of Significant Trade for the 17th meeting of the Animals Committee. 3. Parsons Entomology Section, Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County 900 Exposition Blvd., LosAngeles, California 90007, U.S.A.*' (Received December 13, 1995) Abstract In order to reappraise the interrelationships of genera in the tribe Troidini, and to test the resultant theory of troidine evolution against biogeographical data a cladistic analysis of troidine genera was performed. Data were obtained mainly from immature stages, providing characters that appeared to be more reliable than many "traditional" adult characters. A single cladogram hypothesising phylogenetic relation ships of the troidine genera was generated. This differs markedly from cladograms obtained in previous studies that used only adult characters. However, the cladogram appears to fit well biogeographical data for the Troidini in terms of vicariance biogcography, especially as this relates to the general hypotheses of Gondwanaland fragmentation and continental drift events advanced by recent geological studies. The genus Ornithoptera is shown to be distinct from Troides. Based on input data drawn equally from immature stages and adult characters, a single cladogram hypothesising the likely phylogeny of Ornithoptera species was generated. Annual Portfolio Overview Wallacea Biodiversity Hotspot 30 June 2018 (FY 18) 1. Introduction The Wallacea region, which includes the whole of Timor-Leste and the central portion of Indonesia, including the major island groups of Sulawesi, Maluku, and the Lesser Sundas, qualifies as a hotspot due to its high levels of plant endemism and extensive habitat loss. The chief causes of habitat loss include overexploitation of natural resources, degradation, fragmentation, and conversion, and pressure from human population growth and economic development. Wallacea is an island landscape, with over 1,680 islands and 30 million people, the majority of whom live in coastal areas earning their living from farms, forests, wetlands, and the sea. The Wallacea region, first described biologically by Alfred Russel Wallace in 1869, is noteworthy for having fauna and flora that are distinct from the Asian biogeographic realm to the west and the Australian-Pacific biogeographic realm to the south and east. The many islands are varied – volcanic, non-volcanic, continental crusts, and composites – and are separated by shallow seas in some cases and trenches as deep as 7,000 meters in others. Powerful currents connecting the Pacific and Indian Oceans flow through the region, creating barriers to dispersal of species. The complex geography and barriers to movement have led to the region’s high biodiversity. Among the hotspot’s endemic species are 1,500 vascular plants, 127 mammals, 274 birds, 99 reptiles, 33 amphibians, 50 freshwater fish, and 110 marine fish. There are also as many as 400 species of coral in the region. Notable endemic species include tarsiers, macaques, Flores hawk-eagle (Nisaetus floris), and Komodo dragon (Varanus komodoensis). -

T. GILLIARD In 1950 the junior author made a representative collection of birds in the previously only poorly known Hagen, Bismarck, and Kubor Mountains. The descriptions of one new species and 17 new subspecies from this collection have already been published (Mayr and Gilliard, 1950, 1951, 1952). Further study of the collection revealed six additional new subspecies of New Guinea birds, the descriptions of which are herewith pub- lished. The full report on the collection, including the field notes, is in preparation. Melampitta lugubris longicauda, new subspecies TYPE: A.M.N.H. No. 420120; adult male; Mt. Tafa, near Wharton Range, Papua, 2400 meters; September 10, 1933; A. L. Rand. DIAGNOSIS: Very similar to lugubris of the Arfak Mountains but tail much longer (see measurements). Differs from rostrata of the Weyland and Nassau Mountains by being of smaller size (see Rand, 1942, p. 467). RANGE: Mountains of central and eastern New Guinea from Owen Stanley Range west through the Saruwaged, Bis- marck, Kubor, Hagen, to the Oranje Mountains.
