Discover some of Aiken’s amazing treasures through “Horse Around Aiken”! Aiken Center for the Arts is partnering Aiken’s equestrian history with our famous Horseplay horses in a project entitled “Horse Around Aiken.” It provides an interactive map and informative videos for all participants to navigate Aiken to learn about the Horseplay horses, the artists who created them, and to discover the historic sites where they are located. It addresses our mission by drawing local families and visitors to experience art at work through visiting life-size painted horses located at historically significant sites. Horse Around Aiken is a self-guided treasure hunt where people follow an interactive map housed on the Aiken Center for the Arts (ACA) website. Upon arrival at each site there will be a scannable QR code enabling visitors to watch a video of the history of the horse, the artist and the historic site. Visitors would begin and end their journey in downtown Aiken at Aiken Center for the Arts. Our mission is to inspire and educate by providing unique visual and performing arts experiences. We believe a treasure hunt that invites visitors to experience historic Aiken, to appreciate the artists’ talent, and to recognize our rich equestrian history meets that mission. Our famous Horseplay horses have been in the community since 2004 when they were created to raise funds for the ACA. They have become landmarks in the community and the stories of their creation have been lost. This project will breathe new life into the Horseplay horses and educate a new generation of followers. The Horseplay sites are well recognized and include the Aiken Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame and Museum, Hopelands Gardens, the Train Depot, the Amentum Center for Performing Arts, SRS Museum, and others. This is a well designed concept and provides a free and educational art experience for all ages. It creates an engaging website space, it pays homage to our area artists, it appreciates our historic roots and it brings guests to our galleries and classroom spaces in the Center. Throughout our 49-year history as a nonprofit community arts center we have searched for opportunities to celebrate the rich history of our unique city and to integrate stimulating and educational art experiences for residents and visitors to enjoy. We believe the Horse Around Aiken Treasure Hunt does exactly what we are seeking to offer. For those visitors that complete the interactive map adventure, they will be invited to collect a special take-away gift that is awaiting them at the Aiken Center for the Arts. This Hollywood author is coming to Aiken. You will want to read her book and get to 5 & 12 know Casey Maxwell Clair through this Literal Blast! before she arrives in town to con- duct a Memoir Writing Workshop Oct 29-31.

Casey’s tale of a truly bizarre Hollywood life is both unique as well as universal. Descrip- tive scenes of pain and neglect live side by side with moments of humor, humility and triumph. How did she beat the odds…when her sister did not?

Exhibition Opening - Oct 21, 6:00-8:00pm Main Gallery | “Dogs Interrupted” Heather LaHaise 21 Brooks Gallery {upstairs} | Hollywood Secrets Aiken Artist Guild Gallery | Pamela Moore, Madelene Sherman

Exhibition runs Oct 21 - Dec 3

“Dogs Interrupted” Heather LaHaise Born in New York, Heather LaHaise moved to South Carolina at the age of 8. Heather is a graduate of the University of South Carolina with a degree in Studio Art. She moved back to New York upon college graduation and took art classes at Pratt Manhattan while living at the 92nd Street Y. The urban land- scape influenced her work and she noticed how dogs were often a part of city life. Her compositions soon began to combine abstraction and realism. Layers of color and graphic spaces with dripping paint would become the backdrop for her dogs. Still, she strives to transcend the singular category of dog art. Everyday objects, modern art and design also inspire her work. Heather currently has a piece available at Crate & Barrel online and in stores. Her work has been featured in The NY Post, HGTV, Apartment Therapy, Bark Magazine and Modern Dog.

Hollywood Secrets Aiken Resident, Jacqueline Osborn curates the Hollywood Secrets Exhibition from the memorabilia of Casey Maxwell Clair and Christopher Beaumont’s families. As kids growing up in Hollywood, Casey and Chris knew their lives were different than the other kids. Sometimes in a good way—visiting a movie set, going to famous people’s homes, getting an inside look at the “magic” of Hollywood. At other times, their lives were tragic and sad and all the glamour of Tinsel Town couldn’t make it right again. Each had their own path to take before they met as adults and as they say, “are still living happily ever after!” Casey’s mother, Eve Whitney was a pin-up Vargas model and a starlet under contract at MGM while her father, Eddie Maxwell Cherkose was a debonair and successful comedy writer and songwriter for stage, tv and the big screen. How does a kid (and her sister) fit into that scene? It’s an incredible journey which sent Casey see-sawing between glamorous parties of Hollywood’s elite and nights spent sleeping in a carport in the rain. Her best-selling memoir An Only Child and Her Sister –A True Hollywood Memoir of Two Little Girls Lost and One Found has been on the top ten of Kindle autobiographies for over a year. Chris grew up around the legendary writers who created …Bradbury, Serling, Matheson and Charles Beaumont, his father. When Chris’s father was only 38, he died with early onset Alzheimer’s and shortly thereafter Chris’s mother lost her battle with cancer. So, at age 19 Chris took over as the sole “parent” to his three younger siblings. Again, a story so tragic and triumphant that it was turned into two separate Movies of the Week on ABC and NBC. Movie Stars. Glamour. Magic. Welcome to Hollywood--back in the day…When pretense was honed to Perfection, And a different Reality lived behind the Façade. Yes, long before the tell-all of today… Hollywood had its Secrets.
