The monthly data from the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZIMPARKS) for the period January 2010 to December 2016 was used. The time series plot indicated mixed fluctuations in tourist arrivals and exhibited seasonality. The series became stationary after a logarithmic transformation and a seasonal difference. The Akaike Information Criteria (AIC) and the Bayesian Information Criterion was used in selecting the best model and a SARIMA(1,0,1)(1,1,0)12 model fitted well to the data. The residuals of the model confirmed to all tests. Accuracy measures like the mean absolute error (MAE) and the mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) supported the model and an out of sample for the next 24 months (2017 to 2018) were done. From the forecasts, an increase in tourist arrivals was noted. The results imply the need for enough accommodation facilities in and around the recreational centre. The district is occasionally affected by floods caused by overflowing rivers and, partly, by backwaters from the downstream Cahora Bassa hydropower dam. This flooding affects soil properties due to rapid moisture fluxes and deposition of fine sediments and nutrients. Despite the hazards associated with the floods, the riparian communities benefit from high moisture levels and the nutrients deposited in the floodplains. The residual moisture after flooding events enables the cultivation of crops just after the rainfall season with harvesting taking place around July-August. These periods are outside the normal rainfed agricultural season elsewhere in Zimbabwe where such flooding is not experienced. This study sought to investigate the soil moisture and nutrient dynamics in relation to natural and man-made flood occurrence in the Middle Zambezi valley of Zimbabwe. Twelve trial pits were dug using manual methods along four transects at three different study sites across the floodplain during the period April 2011 to May 2012. At each trial pit, three soil samples were collected at depths of 0.2 m, 0.5 m and 1.2 m and these were analysed for moisture content, nutrient status, pH, texture and electrical conductivity. -

Zimbabwe Rural Electrification Study ESM228 Energy Sector Management Assistance Programme Report 228/00 EJol AD March 2000 JOINT UNDP / WORLD BANK ENERGY SECTOR MANAGEMENT ASSISTANCE PROGRAMME (ESMAP) PURPOSE The Joint UNDP/World Bank E nergy Sector Management Assistance Programme (ESMAP) is a special global technical assistance program run as part of the World Bank's Energy, Mining and Telecommunications Department. ESMAP provides advice to governments on sustainable energy development. Established with the support of UNDP and bilateral official donors in 1983, it focuses on the role of energy in the development process with the objective of contributing to poverty alleviation, improving living conditions and preserving the environment in developing countries and transition economies. ESMAP centers its interventions on three priority areas: sector reform and restructuring; access to modern energy for the poorest; and promotion of sustainable energy practices. GOVERNANCE AND OPERATIONS ESMAP is governed by a Consultative Group (ESMAP CG) composed of representatives of the UNDP and World Bank, other donors, and development experts from regions benefiting from ESMAP's assistance. The ESMAP CG is chaired by a World Bank Vice President, and advised by a Technical Advisory Group (TAG) of four independent energy experts that reviews the Programme's strategic agenda, its work plan, and its achievements. Pleasant, Harare, Zimbabwe Abstract The Mzingwane River is a sand filled channel, with extensive alluvial aquifers distributed along its banks and bed in the lower catch- ment. LandSat TM imagery was used to identify alluvial deposits for potential groundwater resources for irrigation development. On the false colour composite band 3, band 4 and band 5 (FCC 345) the alluvial deposits stand out as white and dense actively growing veg- etation stands out as green making it possible to mark out the lateral extent of the saturated alluvial plain deposits using the riverine fringe and vegetation . The alluvial aquifers form ribbon shaped aquifers extending along the channel and reaching over 20 km in length in some localities and are enhanced at lithological boundaries. These alluvial aquifers extend laterally outside the active channel, and individual alluvial aquifers have been measured with area ranging from 45 ha to 723 ha in the channels and 75 ha to 2196 ha on the plains. The alluvial aquifers are more pronounced in the Lower Mzingwane, where the slopes are gentler and allow for more sediment accumulation.
