Initially a community lobby and advocacy group on human rights issues encompassing HIV and AIDS issues, livelihoods and governance issues was founded within the Godlwayo (Filabusi) community (Matabeleland South, Zimbabwe). The need to improve schools pass rate within Filabusi area greatly informed the formation of this initiative as the community well wishers started making financial donations towards paying school fees for disadvantaged but ably performing school kids and this gave birth to a program called Godlwayo Education scholarship Program (GESP). Also the community identified gaps in information dissemination since there is a media blackout in the area so the idea of a community radio initiative was then muted and supported and this gave birth to a community radio initiative by name Godlwayofm specifically for information dissemination currently using bulk sms facility to share community news. After a year of operating in Godlwayo (Filabusi) it has been noted that the services of the organization are needed in other district and surrounding areas and since this means growth and expansion, the need to register as a formal organization was then realized.

  • Malaria Outbreak Investigation in a Rural Area South of Zimbabwe: a Case–Control Study Paddington T
Mundagowa and Chimberengwa Malar J (2020) 19:197 https://doi.org/10.1186/s12936-020-03270-0 Malaria Journal RESEARCH Open Access Malaria outbreak investigation in a rural area south of Zimbabwe: a case–control study Paddington T. Mundagowa1* and Pugie T. Chimberengwa2 Abstract Background: Ninety percent of the global annual malaria mortality cases emanate from the African region. About 80–90% of malaria transmissions in sub-Saharan Africa occur indoors during the night. In Zimbabwe, 79% of the population are at risk of contracting the disease. Although the country has made signifcant progress towards malaria elimination, isolated seasonal outbreaks persistently resurface. In 2017, Beitbridge District was experiencing a second malaria outbreak within 12 months prompting the need for investigating the outbreak. Methods: An unmatched 1:1 case–control study was conducted to establish the risk factors associated with con- tracting malaria in Ward 6 of Beitbridge District from week 36 to week 44 of 2017. The sample size constituted of 75 randomly selected cases and 75 purposively selected controls. Data were collected using an interviewer-administered questionnaire and Epi Info version 7.2.1.0 was used to conduct descriptive, bivariate and multivariate analyses of the factors associated with contracting malaria. Results: Fifty-two percent of the cases were females and the mean age of cases was 29 13 years. Cases were diag- nosed using rapid diagnostic tests. Sleeping in a house with open eaves (OR: 2.97; 95% CI± 1.44–6.16; p < 0.01), spend- ing the evenings outdoors (OR: 2.24; 95% CI 1.04–4.85; p 0.037) and sleeping in a poorly constructed house (OR: 4.33; 95% CI 1.97–9.51; p < 0.01) were signifcantly associated= with contracting malaria while closing eaves was protec- tive (OR: 0.45; 95% CI 0.20–1.02; p 0.055).

  • An Investigation Into the Spatial and Temporal Distribution of Fallow Land and the Underlying Causes in Southcentral Zimbabwe
Journal of Geography and Geology; Vol. 4, No. 4; 2012 ISSN 1916-9779 E-ISSN 1916-9787 Published by Canadian Center of Science and Education An Investigation into the Spatial and Temporal Distribution of Fallow Land and the Underlying Causes in Southcentral Zimbabwe Emmanuel Manzungu1 & Linda Mtali2 1 Department of Soil Science and Agricultural Engineering, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Zimbabwe, Zimbabwe 2 Department of Science Technology, Harare Polytechnic, Zimbabwe Correspondence: Emmanuel Manzungu, Department of Soil Science and Agricultural Engineering, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Zimbabwe, Zimbabwe. E-mail: [email protected] & [email protected] Received: July 11, 2012 Accepted: August 10, 2012 Online Published: September 24, 2012 doi:10.5539/jgg.v4n4p62 URL: http://dx.doi.org/10.5539/jgg.v4n4p62 Abstract The purpose of the study was to assess the spatial and temporal distribution of fallow land in Zimbabwean communal lands and the underlying causes against a backdrop of reports of an increasing proportion of agricultural land being left fallow, which has also been reported in other parts of Africa. Chivi district, that is located in the south central part of the country, was used as a case study. Landsat images complemented by field assessments were used to assess changes in fallow land between 1984 and 2010. Standard soil and social science analysis methods were used to assess the likely biophysical and/ or socio-economic causes. The proportion of fallow land was found to increase up to 51.5% during the period, mainly because of socio-economic rather than biophysical factors. Draught power shortage was ranked as the major cause (34%) followed by labor shortage (24%), lack of inputs (22%), and poor soil fertility (16%).
