Antonucci © 2013 iii ABSTRACT Scholars of Italian-American history have traditionally asserted that the ethnic community’s media during the 1920s and 1930s was pro-Fascist leaning. This thesis challenges that narrative by proving that moderate, and often ambivalent, opinions existed at one time, and the shift to a philo-Fascist position was an active process. Using a survey of six Italian-language sources from diverse cities during the inauguration of Benito Mussolini’s regime, research shows that interpretations varied significantly. One of the newspapers, Il Cittadino Italo-Americano (Youngstown, Ohio) is then used as a case study to better understand why events in Italy were interpreted in certain ways. -

We are therefore tempted to believe the nationalist rhetoric that accompanied many urban projects of the early 20th century. Taking the example of Marcello Piacentini, the most successful architect in Italy during the dictatorship of Mussolini, the article traces how international trends in civic design and urban planning affected the architect’s work. The article aims to show that architectural and urban form cannot be taken as genuinely national – whether or not it may be called “Italian” or “fascist”. Concepts and forms underwent a versatile transformation in history, were adapted to specific needs and changed their meaning according to the new context. The challenge is to understand why certain forms are chosen in a specific case and how they were used to create displays that offer new modes of interpretation. The birth of town planning as an architectural discipline When Marcello Piacentini (1881-1960) began his career at the turn of the 20th century, urban design as a profession for architects was a very young discipline. -
Italian Fascism Between Ideology and Spectacle
Fast Capitalism ISSN 1930-014X Volume 1 • Issue 2 • 2005 doi:10.32855/fcapital.200502.014 Italian Fascism between Ideology and Spectacle Federico Caprotti In April 1945, a disturbing scene was played out at a petrol station in Piazzale Loreto, in central Milan. Mussolini’s body was displayed for all to see, hanging upside down, together with those of other fascists and of Claretta Petacci, his mistress. Directly, the scene showed the triumph of the partisans, whose efforts against the Nazis had greatly accelerated the liberation of the North of Italy. The Piazzale Loreto scene was both a victory sign and a reprisal. Nazis and fascists had executed various partisans and displayed their bodies in the same place earlier in the war. Indirectly, the scene was a symbolic reversal of what had until then been branded as historical certainty. Piazzale Loreto was a public urban spectacle aimed at showing the Italian people that fascism had ended. The Duce was now displayed as a gruesome symbol of defeat in the city where fascism had first developed. More than two decades of fascism were symbolically overcome through a barbaric catharsis. The concept of spectacle has been applied to Italian fascism (Falasca-Zamponi 2000) in an attempt to conceptualize and understand the relationship between fascist ideology and its external manifestations in the public, symbolic, aesthetic, and urban spheres. This paper aims to further develop the concept of fascism as a society of spectacle by elaborating a geographical understanding of Italian fascism as a material phenomenon within modernity. Fascism is understood as an ideological construct (on which the political movement was based) which was expressed in the symbolic and aesthetic realm; its symbolism and art however are seen as having been rooted in material, historical specificity. -

Martin Uppsala University, Sweden Abstract Italian fascists presented corporatism, a system of sector-wide unions bring- ing together workers and employers under firm state control, as a new way to resolve tensions between labour and capital, and to reincorporate the working classes in na- tional life. ‘Cultural corporatism’ – the fascist labour model applied to the realm of the arts – was likewise presented as a historic resolution of the problem of the artist’s role in modern society. Focusing on two art conferences in Venice in 1932 and 1934, this article explores how Italian leaders promoted cultural corporatism internationally, creating illiberal international networks designed to help promote fascist ideology and Italian soft power. Author: Reitz, Bettina Title: Building in words : representations of the process of construction in Latin literature Issue Date: 2013-05-08 Epilogue Constructing romanità: The Obelisk at the Foro Mussolini Roman representations of construction and destruction have undergone 2000 years of reception and have in their turn become available to be manipulated and strategically employed by others. This afterword offers some reflections on one particular moment in the history of this reception and appropriation and aims at opening up avenues for future exploration. We remain in the city of Rome, but travel forward in time to the 20th century and the fascist regime under Benito Mussolini. The entrance to the Foro Italico, a complex of mostly sports-related buildings in the north of Rome constructed in the 1920s and 1930s, is dominated by a huge monolithic marble obelisk, which to this day bears the inscription MUSSOLINI DUX (fig. 20).1 The obelisk was placed there in 1932, and the story of its creation, transportation and erection was told and retold by the Italian fascist regime. No other type of monument depends for its impact so much upon the viewer’s ‘memory’ of its creation as does an obelisk.2 In chapter 1, I discussed how in antiquity inscriptions, visual representations, and literary texts were employed to activate and manipulate a viewer-reader’s awareness of the effort, difficulty and spectacle of the transportation and erection of an obelisk. The fascist propaganda surrounding the obelisk of Mussolini, even though conveyed via a different set of media, displays a range of comparable strategies. -

THE WEST VIRGINIA PUBLIC EMPLOYEES GRIEVANCE BOARD EDWARD SMARR and JOSHUA SCHULTHEISZ, Grievants, v. Docket No. 2020-1488-CONS DIVISION OF CORRECTIONS AND REHABILITATION/ BUREAU OF PRISONS AND JAILS/ ST. MARYS CORRECTIONAL CENTER AND JAIL, Respondent. DECISION Grievants, Edward Smarr and Joshua Schultheisz, were employed by Respondent, Division of Corrections and Rehabilitation, at St. Marys Correctional Center and Jail (SMCCJ). Respondent dismissed Grievants during their probationary period of employment. On January 17, 2020, Grievant Schultheisz filed his grievance (Docket No. 2020- 0858-MAPS) stating, “Wrongfully accused of actions according to WV DCR, Commissioner, and Governor. Religious representation sought by state officials before investigation concluded. Wrongful Termination Resulting in permanent dismissal. Penalized for following orders from senior officer.” As relief, he requests, “Public apology from all who slandered and settlement for troubled times.”1 On January 19, 2020, Grievant Smarr filed his grievance (Docket No. 2020-0822-MAPS) stating the same. 1“The remedy of a public apology is not available as relief from this Grievance Board.” Lawrence v. Bluefield State Coll., Docket No. 2008-0666-BSC (June 19, 2008); Emrick v. Wood County Bd. of Educ., Docket No. 03-54-300 (Mar. 9, 2004); Hall v. W. Va. Div. of Corr., Docket No. 89-CORR-687 (Oct. 19, 1990). The undersigned will not further address Grievants’ request for an apology. 1 Grievants filed directly to level three of the grievance process.2 The two grievances were consolidated into the current action on June 5, 2020. A level three hearing was held on July 8, 2020, before the undersigned at the Grievance Board’s Westover, West Virginia office. -
