Supplementing the key to adults is a checklist of all species, their synonyms, and all literature citations associated with the nomenclatural epithets. Two new genera, Gymnephoria Ratcliffe and Madiana Ratcliffe and Rom´e,with one new species each, are described from Mexico and Martinique, respectively. Key words: Coleoptera, Hydroscaphidae, Hydroscapha, China Introduction The family Hydroscaphidae belongs to the suborder Myxophagidac. Superficially, Hydro- scaphidae resemble the genus Linmebius LEACH (Hydracnidac). However, they are easily distinguished from Limnebius by their shorter palpi and the filiform antennae. Adults of Hydroscaphidae can be recognized by the combination of the following characters: small size (0.6 - 1.9 mm long); antennae inserted vcntrally, consisting of 5 or 8 segments; maxillary palpi short; elytra apically truncate, thus abdomen partly exposed; tarsi 3-scgmcnted. The morphology of Hydroscaphidae was described in detail by REICHARDT & HlNTON (1976), RlCHOUX & DOLEDEC (1987) and LAWRENCE & REICHARDT (1991). The plastron respiration of the adults of Hydroscapha granulum MOTSCHULSKY was described by MESSNER & JOOST (1984). Hydroscaphidae arc normally found in streams or in seepage water on rocks (hygropetric habitats), where they feed on algae, but they have also been collected in pools and hot springs. The family Hydroscaphidae contains 3 genera. Yara REICHARDT & HlNTON and Scaphydra REICHARDT arc restricted to the New World, whereas Hydroscapha LECONTE occurs in the Nearctic, Palcarctic and Oriental Realms. -

Annotation of the mitochondrial genomes of the Hydroscapha granulum Motschulsky, 1855 (Myxophaga, Hydroscaphidae) and Aspidytes niobe Ribera et al., 2002 (Adephaga, Aspidytidae). Material and methods Total DNA was extracted from single beetles using the Qiagen DNeasy tissue kit (Qiagen, Hilden, Germany) and nondestructive methods to preserve specimens. Gene fragments at opposing ends of the mitochondrial genome were amplified using standard protocols outlined elsewhere (Balke et al., 2005). We used universal primers (Suppl. Table 1). Based on the sequence information thus obtained, we designed species-specific longer primers of about 26–38 base pairs (bp; Suppl. Table 1) to amplify the following longer fragments: cox1–rrnS (c. 13 kb) on the mtDNA plus strand and nad2–cox1 (c. 1 kb) on the minus strand for A. niobe; and cox1–cob (c. 9 kb) on the plus strand and cob–cox 1 (c. 7 kb) on the minus strand for H. granulum. Long-range polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplifications were performed using TaKaRa LA TaqTM polymerase (Takara Bio Inc., Tokyo, Japan) according to the manufacturer’s specifications. The general reaction mixture for 50 μl samples was: 10 × LA PCR buffer 5 μl, 25 mM MgCl2 5 μl, dNTP mixture (2.5 mM each) 8 μl, primer A (10 μM) 2.5 μl, primer B (10 μM) 2.5 TM μl, TaKaRa LA Taq (5 U/μl), 0.5 μl, double-distilled H2O 24.5 μl and 2 μl genomic DNA as template. PCR followed this protocol: after an initial denaturation step at 94 °C for 90 s, 14 cycles were performed at 95 °C for 15 s, annealing for 15 s and 68 °C for 15 min. -

Lepiceridae, head morphology, systematic position, function Abstract. Adult head structures of Lepicerus inaequalis were examined in detail and interpreted functionally and phylogenetically. The monogeneric family clearly belongs to Myxophaga. A moveable process on the left mandible is an autapomorphy of the subor- der. Even though Lepiceridae is the “basal” sistergroup of the remaining three myxophagan families, it is likely the group which has accumulated most autapomorphic features, e.g. tuberculate surface structure, internalised antennal insertion, and a specific entogna- thous condition. Adults of Lepiceridae and other myxophagan groups possess several features which are also present in larvae (e.g., premental papillae, semimembranous mandibular lobe). This is probably related to a very similar life style and has nothing to do with “desembryonisation”. Lepiceridae and other myxophagans share a complex and, likely, derived character of the feeding appa- ratus with many polyphagan groups (e.g., Staphyliniformia). The mandibles are equipped with large molae and setal brushes. The latter interact with hairy processes or lobes of the epi- and hypopharynx. This supports a sistergroup relationship between both sub- orders. This paper reports the collecting of adult beetles and third-instar larvae of Coelocorynus desfontainei Antoine, 1999 in Cameroon and provides new data on the biology of this high-altitude Afromontane genus. It also presents the first diagnosis of this genus based on larval characters and examination of its systematic position in a phylogenetic context using 78 parsimony informa- tive larval and adult characters. Based on the results of our analysis we (1) support the hypothesis that the tribe Trichiini is paraphy- letic with respect to both Valgini and the rest of the Cetoniinae, and (2) propose that the Trichiini subtribe Cryptodontina, represented by Coelocorynus, is a sister group of the Valgini: Valgina, represented by Valgus. The larvae-only analyses were about twofold better than the adults-only analyses in providing a phylogenetic resolution consistent with the larvae + adults analyses. -

E-mail: [email protected]. 3Corresponding author Abstract During the course of recent fieldwork on Venezuelan aquatic insects, a new species of Hydroscaphidae, Hydroscapha perijaensis Hall & Short sp. n., was discovered and is herein described, representing the first known South American species of the genus. The new species was found in association with rock seepages in both the wet and dry seasons. Locality data is provided, plus dorsal and ventral habitus images of both sexes, along with key characters separating the new taxon from other species within the genus. In this study, a new species of moss-eating flea beetles—Cangshanaltica fuanensis sp. nov. is described; the morphology of the adult and immature stages is described and illustrated. The life history and remarkable biological features of this species are revealed. Females deposit one large egg at a time; egg length equals 0.4–0.5 times the female body length. Females lay and hide each egg under a spoon-shaped moss leaf. There are only two ovarioles on each side of the ovary in the female reproductive system, which has not been reported before in Chrysomelidae. Besides, a modified fan-driven Berlese funnel is designed for faster extraction of moss inhabiting flea beetles. We suggest this improved device could also be useful for collecting other ground-dwelling arthropods.
