The History of Photography: the Research Library of the Mack Lee
THE HISTORY OF PHOTOGRAPHY The Research Library of the Mack Lee Gallery 2,633 titles in circa 3,140 volumes Lee Gallery Photography Research Library Comprising over 3,100 volumes of monographs, exhibition catalogues and periodicals, the Lee Gallery Photography Research Library provides an overview of the history of photography, with a focus on the nineteenth century, in particular on the first three decades after the invention photography. Strengths of the Lee Library include American, British, and French photography and photographers. The publications on French 19th- century material (numbering well over 100), include many uncommon specialized catalogues from French regional museums and galleries, on the major photographers of the time, such as Eugène Atget, Daguerre, Gustave Le Gray, Charles Marville, Félix Nadar, Charles Nègre, and others. In addition, it is noteworthy that the library includes many small exhibition catalogues, which are often the only publication on specific photographers’ work, providing invaluable research material. The major developments and evolutions in the history of photography are covered, including numerous titles on the pioneers of photography and photographic processes such as daguerreotypes, calotypes, and the invention of negative-positive photography. The Lee Gallery Library has great depth in the Pictorialist Photography aesthetic movement, the Photo- Secession and the circle of Alfred Stieglitz, as evidenced by the numerous titles on American photography of the early 20th-century. This is supplemented by concentrations of books on the photography of the American Civil War and the exploration of the American West. Photojournalism is also well represented, from war documentary to Farm Security Administration and LIFE photography.

Portraits & Early Work Arnold Newman ! Opening: May 8th from 6 until 9 pm Show: May 9th until June 28th 2014 ! ____________________________ ! FIFTY ONE TOO is pleased to announce the first solo show by the renowned photographer Arnold Newman (USA, 1918-2006). He’s legendary for his ‘environmental portraiture’: a new approach that he established by capturing his subjects in their surroundings in order to reveal the essence of the sitter’s personality and/or profession. World’s most eminent people took place before his lens: from post-war American and European artists to cultural figures and intellectuals to even American Presidents. Aside his narrative portraits, he is also known for his abstract and documentary photography, his ‘early work’. ! Although he began to study painting Arnold Newman switched quickly to photography. His photographic career started at chain portrait studios in Philadelphia in the late 1930s. There he learned the importance of interacting with the people in front of the lens. In his spare time he wondered around with his camera and mingled with art students who were trained at that time by Alexey Brodovitch (1898-1971), the influential art director of Harper’s Bazaar. Through them Brodovitch’s innovative perspective encouraged to develop Newman’s gaze by photographing his surroundings in a graphical, abstract way. His early work shows views of city walls, porches, chairs, doorways, etc… which affirm a graphic simplicity. Also inspired by Walker Evans and Dorothea Lange’s he captured social-documentary images of subordinated neighborhoods. In 1941 he was discovered by Alfred Stieglitz (1864-1946) and had his first exhibition in Manhattan.

Arnold Newman The Early Works: 1938-1942 Sitters and Signatures Autographed Portraits by Arnold Newman 18 January – 17 March, 2007 Reception with the Artist’s Family Wednesday, 17 January, 2007, 6-8pm New York - Howard Greenberg Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of photographs by Arnold Newman. Conceived with the artist prior to his death on June 6, 2006, this exhibition will feature a remarkable group of virtually unknown photographs that pre-date Newman’s celebrated career as a portraitist. The south gallery will feature classic portraits by Newman that have the particular virtue of having been signed and inscribed by the sitters. The early work is revelatory, the portraiture a powerful reminder of the artist’s legacy as one of the most accomplished and revered photographers of his generation. Of these early photographs Newman said, “I had worked very deliberately on my paintings and the direction in my photography followed the same concept. I was building a photograph. I wasn’t taking one.” This precept is made manifest in all of Newman’s photographs but particularly so in the work he produced in Florida in the late 1930’s. With the money he made in the studio he was able to purchase a Speed Graphic camera with a high-quality lens and with his new equipment began to “build” photographs of a highly experimental nature. Incorporating many of the aesthetic principles of Cubism, Newman produced straight images that border on abstraction. By isolating shapes and objects, emphasizing linearity, and maximizing the visual effects of light and shadow, he created images of remarkable beauty and compositional rigor.

Press release Berlin . December 21, 2011 Arnold Newman . Masterclass Retrospective C/O Berlin, International Forum For Visual Dialogues, is pleased to present the exhibition Masterclass featuring the work of American photographer Arnold Newman from March 3 to May 20, 2012. The opening will be held on Friday, March 2, , 2012, at 7 p.m. at the Postfuhramt, Oranienburger Straße 35/36 in Berlin-Mitte. “I am interested in what motivates people, what they do with their lives. I would have made a good psychiatrist” - Arnold Newman A person’s entire life represented by a single instant - the photographic portrait as a form of visual biography. He intentionally incorporated the personal environment, the work, and signs which revealed the intellectual background of those he photographed. With great sensitivity and care, he brought these aspects so strongly into the foreground that they became symbols and clues to the person’s character. Every one of his “environmental portraits” – as they were called by critics - of artists, creative professionals, scientists, intellectuals, athletes, and statesmen is a formally and conceptually balanced composition. With their POWERFUL metaphoric quality, THEY represent a cross-section of twentieth century culture. Arnold Newman photographed numerous famous people in his empathetic visual language—Pablo Picasso, Marilyn Monroe, Marc Chagall, Igor Stravinsky, Max Ernst, Piet Mondrian, Marcel Duchamp, John F. Kennedy, David Hock- ney, Martha Graham, Andy Warhol— but hated the idea of celebrity when it was devoid of achievement. Lesson 9 CONTENT: Collaborative Portraiture Robin Schwartz Robin Schwartz (b. 1957, Passaic, New Jersey) is known for her portraits exploring interspecies relationships. People and animals appear as equals in these curious images. She has described her pictures as “evidence of the invented worlds we explore and the fables we enact.” Her book Amelia & The Animals (Aperture, 2014) features portraits of her daughter and muse, Amelia, alongside a wide variety of animals, including elephants, llamas, ponies, and cats. Her photographs are held in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Museum of Modern Art, both in New York; Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, D.C.; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Brooklyn Museum; Chrysler Museum of Art, Norfolk, Virginia; Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris; and Museum Folkwang, Essen, Germany. She is an assistant professor of photography at William Paterson. She received her MFA in photography from Pratt Institute. Dulce Pinzón Dulce Pinzón (b. 1974, Mexico City) is a documentary photographer whose work has a satirical tone to it. Her project The Real Story of the Superheroes features ordinary men and women who have immigrated to New York City in their work environments. Pinzón’s subjects wear superhero attire in order to raise questions surrounding the definition of heroism after 9/11. Her series brings to light the presence of immigrants in the workforce and the importance they hold. Pinzón has been awarded the Mexican Jóvenes Creadores (2002) and first prize at the 12th Photography Biennial of the Centro de la Imagen in Mexico City (2006), and was a fellow at the New York Foundation for the Arts (2006).

You'll usually find Newman's subject with a characteristic object, an iconic accessory or a familiar pièce of furniture. You could call this Newman's trademark, his signature that has influenced generations of photographers. Newman himself disliked being labeled an "environmental" photographer. "Forget about labelling me as one thing or another…I see myself simply as a photographer who works in portraits, abstractions, still lifes or whatever ». Newan candidly admitted. In the late thirties he showed an interest in abstract compositions and later was to become famous for his portraits. He died on June 6th, 2006 at the age of 88. Les Douches la Galerie is proud to exhibit both aspects of his work – the abstractions and the portraits – as a new complete way to read and appreciate Newman's photography. Press Release For Immediate Release Contact: [email protected] Arnold Newman, Artist Portraits May 2 through June 22, 2019 Opening Reception May 2, 7 – 9pm The Fahey/Klein Gallery is pleased to present Arnold Newman, Portraits, an exhibition of works by one of the most influential portrait photographers of the 20th century. The exhibition of works from the 1940s through the 1970s will present a selection of Newman’s finest, most nuanced prints including striking portraits of artists Marcel Duchamp, Martha Graham, David Hockney, Willem de Kooning, Louise Nevelson, Isamu Noguchi, Georgia O'Keeffe, and Diana Vreeland. Newman is generally acknowledged as the pioneer of the environmental portrait. He spent time exploring the essence of his subjects, finding the best environment to express who they were, and integrating them with their work into compositions that referenced the work. He structured his own visual language, setting up photographs with jaunty geometric grace and inventing visual elements where none existed thus adding complexity and depth to his portraits. His sense of tension, rhythm, and balance, guides the eye through his command of composition. In 2018 Radius Books celebrated the centennial of Newman’s birth, with the release of their stunning hardback book, Arnold Newman: One Hundred. Gregory Heisler, Professor of Photography, Syracuse University, writes in his introduction to the book “Arnold Newman conceived a new vocabulary for photographic portraiture. It is difficult today to truly appreciate the magnitude of his breakthrough. Before Arnold’s arrival, the photographic portrait was generally a box with somebody in the center. Arnold used what was around him to create visually complex, spatially intriguing portraits that had a psychological dimension.

What is Western New York Art? By Nancy Weekly, Head of Collections and the Charles Cary Rumsey Curator When the Charles Burchfield Center was created on December 9, 1966, its founding statement established Charles Burchfield as the sole subject of exhibitions, study and collection development, stating that it “will feature continuous exhibits of significant works by the artist, including paintings and sketches as well as his journals and writings, together with publications concerning him and comprehensive photographic records of his work.” The exhibitions presented during the first two years, following the artist’s death on January 10, 1967, were exclusively on Charles E. Burchfield. In 1968, a Burchfield family exhibition showed Three Generations of Burchfield Painters: Works by Charles E. Burchfield, Martha Burchfield Richter and Peggy Richter. Then, in February 1969, the Charles Burchfield Center presented its first solo exhibition about another Western New York artist, a retrospective “community tribute” to Harold L. Olmsted. It signaled a new era in which both Burchfield and regional artists would be presented. A two-paragraph statement published at the end of the exhibition catalogue reads virtually the same as the original mission. Edna M. Lindemann, listed as Curator at the time, always maintained that Burchfield wanted the Center to serve other Western New York artists. Although no written record of this statement has been preserved or uncovered from original documents, these sentiments seem to have come into play in presenting the Olmsted exhibition and the history of various exhibitions that have followed. PROFILESmithsonian National Portrait Gallery News Summer 2004 From the DIRECTOR I think it is fair to say that while scien- tists have been in the forefront of Amer- ican achievement from the nineteenth century on, they have not always been in the forefront of American attention. There have always been a few, of course, like Albert Einstein or Jonas Salk, who are known to a wide range of their fellow citizens. But mostly, except for moments of Nobel Prize recognition, they labor unnoticed and uncel- ebrated outside of their own fields. This is a situation the National Portrait Gallery hopes to address—and redress—in this issue of Profile, and in future programs and exhibitions. As members of the Smithsonian community, we are aware that our very institutional existence is because of the generosity of James Smithson, a gentleman scientist in the era before professionalization, who saw the pro- motion of science as at the heart of the goals of the Enlightenment. It was his conviction that America would be center stage for a democratic experi- ment that would have to include “the increase and diffusion of knowledge,” which led to his extraordinary gift to the American people. Led by our first Secretary, the physicist Joseph Henry, the Smithsonian established a strong commitment to scientific research that has continued to our own day. And the Smithsonian, too, benefited from the collecting associated with the historic Wilkes Expedition to the South Seas (1838–42), initially displayed in NPG’s own Patent Office Building and described in this issue. The Portrait Gallery’s “problem” with the proper recognition of the contribution of scientists has never been a lack of will but more a lack of vital examples of scientific portraiture.

The project includes research on the sitting subjects, an overview of the physical photographs, an annotated bibliography and the organization and housing of the collection for permanent accession into the Art Gallery of Ontario’s photography collection. The paper consists of an analytical portion which outlines the methodology of creating the finding aid.
