Cumulated Bibliography of Biographies of Ocean Scientists Deborah Day, Scripps Institution of Oceanography Archives Revised December 3, 2001. Preface This bibliography attempts to list all substantial autobiographies, biographies, festschrifts and obituaries of prominent oceanographers, marine biologists, fisheries scientists, and other scientists who worked in the marine environment published in journals and books after 1922, the publication date of Herdman’s Founders of Oceanography. The bibliography does not include newspaper obituaries, government documents, or citations to brief entries in general biographical sources. Items are listed alphabetically by author, and then chronologically by date of publication under a legend that includes the full name of the individual, his/her date of birth in European style(day, month in roman numeral, year), followed by his/her place of birth, then his date of death and place of death. Entries are in author-editor style following the Chicago Manual of Style (Chicago and London: University of Chicago Press, 14th ed., 1993). Citations are annotated to list the language if it is not obvious from the text. Annotations will also indicate if the citation includes a list of the scientist’s papers, if there is a relationship between the author of the citation and the scientist, or if the citation is written for a particular audience. This bibliography of biographies of scientists of the sea is based on Jacqueline Carpine-Lancre’s bibliography of biographies first published annually beginning with issue 4 of the History of Oceanography Newsletter (September 1992). It was supplemented by a bibliography maintained by Eric L. Mills and citations in the biographical files of the Archives of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UCSD. -

Acting Jewish: Negotiating Ethnicity on the American Stage and Screen Henry Bial http://www.press.umich.edu/titleDetailDesc.do?id=147187 The University of Michigan Press chapter 4 How Jews Became Sexy, 1968–1983 “What’s a nice Jewish girl like me doing on the cover of Playboy?” This caption appears, self-referentially enough, on the cover of Playboy’s October 1977 issue,1 which features a photograph of Barbra Streisand, wearing white shorts and a T-shirt emblazoned with the Playboy logo, reclining across the bottom half of a large white circle; Streisand’s extended left leg forms a line that transforms the circle into a Q, which presumably refers to the questions she will answer in what the leading headline bills as: “THE FIRST IN-DEPTH INTERVIEW WITH BARBRA STREISAND.” The caption (“What’s a nice Jewish girl . .”) appears suspended above and to the right of Streisand’s head, evoking a cartoon-style thought bubble. The location of the caption and the use of the ‹rst person (“like me”) suggests that this is a question that Streisand is asking herself. Yet perhaps there is a more interesting ques- tion: why has Playboy, the self-appointed arbiter of feminine sexual attractiveness, chosen to feature “a nice Jewish girl” on its cover? How did Streisand become, in fact, “the ‹rst female celebrity in 24 years” to pose for the magazine’s cover?2 In March of 1962, ‹fteen years prior to her Playboy appearance, Streisand made her Broadway debut as Miss Marmelstein in Jerome Weidman and Harold Rome’s I Can Get It for You Wholesale. -

IRB protocol # 12-0485 iii Abstract Thorson, Gregory Stuart (Ph.D. Department of Theatre) The Dream Continues: American New Play Development in the Twenty-First Century Thesis directed by Associate Professor Oliver Gerland New play development is an important component of contemporary American theatre. In this dissertation, I examined current models of new play development in the United States. Looking at Lincoln Center Theater and Signature Theatre, I considered major non-profit theatres that seek to create life-long connections to legendary playwrights. I studied new play development at a major regional theatre, Denver Center Theatre Company, and showed how the use of commissions contribute to its new play development program, the Colorado New Play Summit. I also examined a new model of play development that has arisen in recent years—the use of small black box theatres housed in large non-profit theatre institutions. -

New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, Jerome Robbins Dance Division, “backstage.” With this issue, we celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Jerome Robbins History Dance Division of the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts. In 1944, an enterprising young librarian at The New York Public Library named One of New York City’s great cultural treasures, it is the largest and Genevieve Oswald was asked to manage a small collection of dance materials most diverse dance archive in the world. It offers the public free access in the Music Division. By 1947, her title had officially changed to Curator and the to dance history through its letters, manuscripts, books, periodicals, Jerome Robbins Dance Division, known simply as the Dance Collection for many prints, photographs, videos, films, oral history recordings, programs and years, has since grown to include tens of thousands of books; tens of thousands clippings. It offers a wide variety of programs and exhibitions through- of reels of moving image materials, original performance documentations, audio, out the year. Additionally, through its Dance Education Coordinator, it and oral histories; hundreds of thousands of loose photographs and negatives; reaches many in public and private schools and the branch libraries.
