Die jüngste Produktion dieser Reihe "The Early RIAS-Recordings" enthält bisher unveröffentlichte Aufnahmen von Friedrich Gulda, die zwischen 1950 und 1959 entstanden. Die Einspielungen von Beethoven, Debussy, Ravel und Chopin zeigen den jungen Pianisten an der Schwelle zu internationalem Ruhm. Varsity Jazz Jazz at Reading University 1951 - 1984 By Trevor Bannister 1 VARSITY JAZZ Jazz at Reading University 1951 represented an important year for Reading University and for Reading’s local jazz scene. The appearance of Humphrey Lyttelton’s Band at the University Rag Ball, held at the Town Hall on 28th February, marked the first time a true product of the Revivalist jazz movement had played in the town. That it should be the Lyttelton band, Britain’s pre-eminent group of the time, led by the ex-Etonian and Grenadier Guardsman, Humphrey Lyttelton, made the event doubly important. Barely three days later, on 3rd March, the University Rag Committee presented a second event at the Town Hall. The Jazz Jamboree featured the Magnolia Jazz Band led by another trumpeter fast making a name for himself, the colourful Mick Mulligan. It would be the first of his many visits to Reading. Denny Dyson provided the vocals and the Yew Tree Jazz Band were on hand for interval support. There is no further mention of jazz activity at the university in the pages of the Reading Standard until 1956, when the clarinettist Sid Phillips led his acclaimed touring and broadcasting band on stage at the Town Hall for the Rag Ball on 25th February, supported by Len Lacy and His Sweet Band. Considering the intense animosity between the respective followers of traditional and modern jazz, which sometimes reached venomous extremes, the Rag Committee took a brave decision in 1958 to book exponents of the opposing schools. The Rag Ball at the Olympia Ballroom on 20th February, saw Ken Colyer’s Jazz Band, which followed the zealous path of its leader in keeping rigidly to the disciplines of New Orleans jazz, sharing the stage with the much cooler and sophisticated sounds of a quartet led by Tommy Whittle, a tenor saxophonist noted for his work with the Ted Heath Orchestra. -

An exhibition curated by History of Art MA students 4 May to Autumn 2018 In Character: Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh, 1937 - 1973 Introduction Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh were amongst the biggest names in British theatre and film in the twentieth century. After meeting in 1937, the couple began a passionate love affair which resulted in a marriage that spanned two decades. During and after marriage they continued to have successful careers on stage and screen collaborating together on many productions, including A Streetcar Named Desire (1949), The School for Scandal (1949) and Macbeth (1955). While their acting made the duo’s roles iconic, the costumes designed for them to wear on stage further consolidated their illustrious theatrical stature. The University of Bristol Theatre Collection holds a fascinating array of objects related to Olivier and Leigh, which reveal the relationship between actor, character, and costume, as well as the close relationships they shared with costume designers. Through a display of photographs, illustrations, and costume pieces, we see the inventiveness and skill behind the illuminating designs which bridge the gap between actor and character. With the help of designers such as Oliver Messel, Cecil Beaton, Doris Zinkeisen and Julia Trevelyan Oman, Olivier and Leigh completed their transformations to become ‘in character’. 2 Biographies Laurence Olivier (1907 - 1989) is perhaps the best-known stage actor of the twentieth century. He began his West End acting career in the 1930s and by the end of the decade he had established himself as a star of both stage and screen. He had tremendous range and was celebrated for his portrayals of classic roles such as Hamlet and Richard III, and for his less conventional roles, such as sleazy vaudeville comedian, Archie Rice, in The Entertainer (1957). -

THE HISTORY OF PHOTOGRAPHY The Research Library of the Mack Lee Gallery 2,633 titles in circa 3,140 volumes Lee Gallery Photography Research Library Comprising over 3,100 volumes of monographs, exhibition catalogues and periodicals, the Lee Gallery Photography Research Library provides an overview of the history of photography, with a focus on the nineteenth century, in particular on the first three decades after the invention photography. Strengths of the Lee Library include American, British, and French photography and photographers. The publications on French 19th- century material (numbering well over 100), include many uncommon specialized catalogues from French regional museums and galleries, on the major photographers of the time, such as Eugène Atget, Daguerre, Gustave Le Gray, Charles Marville, Félix Nadar, Charles Nègre, and others. In addition, it is noteworthy that the library includes many small exhibition catalogues, which are often the only publication on specific photographers’ work, providing invaluable research material. The major developments and evolutions in the history of photography are covered, including numerous titles on the pioneers of photography and photographic processes such as daguerreotypes, calotypes, and the invention of negative-positive photography. The Lee Gallery Library has great depth in the Pictorialist Photography aesthetic movement, the Photo- Secession and the circle of Alfred Stieglitz, as evidenced by the numerous titles on American photography of the early 20th-century. This is supplemented by concentrations of books on the photography of the American Civil War and the exploration of the American West. Photojournalism is also well represented, from war documentary to Farm Security Administration and LIFE photography. -

FIFTY ONE TOO is pleased to announce the first solo show by the renowned photographer Arnold Newman (USA, 1918-2006). He’s legendary for his ‘environmental portraiture’: a new approach that he established by capturing his subjects in their surroundings in order to reveal the essence of the sitter’s personality and/or profession. World’s most eminent people took place before his lens: from post-war American and European artists to cultural figures and intellectuals to even American Presidents. Aside his narrative portraits, he is also known for his abstract and documentary photography, his ‘early work’. ! Although he began to study painting Arnold Newman switched quickly to photography. His photographic career started at chain portrait studios in Philadelphia in the late 1930s. There he learned the importance of interacting with the people in front of the lens. In his spare time he wondered around with his camera and mingled with art students who were trained at that time by Alexey Brodovitch (1898-1971), the influential art director of Harper’s Bazaar. Through them Brodovitch’s innovative perspective encouraged to develop Newman’s gaze by photographing his surroundings in a graphical, abstract way. His early work shows views of city walls, porches, chairs, doorways, etc… which affirm a graphic simplicity. Also inspired by Walker Evans and Dorothea Lange’s he captured social-documentary images of subordinated neighborhoods. In 1941 he was discovered by Alfred Stieglitz (1864-1946) and had his first exhibition in Manhattan. -

Arnold Newman The Early Works: 1938-1942 Sitters and Signatures Autographed Portraits by Arnold Newman 18 January – 17 March, 2007 Reception with the Artist’s Family Wednesday, 17 January, 2007, 6-8pm New York - Howard Greenberg Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of photographs by Arnold Newman. Conceived with the artist prior to his death on June 6, 2006, this exhibition will feature a remarkable group of virtually unknown photographs that pre-date Newman’s celebrated career as a portraitist. The south gallery will feature classic portraits by Newman that have the particular virtue of having been signed and inscribed by the sitters. The early work is revelatory, the portraiture a powerful reminder of the artist’s legacy as one of the most accomplished and revered photographers of his generation. Of these early photographs Newman said, “I had worked very deliberately on my paintings and the direction in my photography followed the same concept. I was building a photograph. I wasn’t taking one.” This precept is made manifest in all of Newman’s photographs but particularly so in the work he produced in Florida in the late 1930’s. With the money he made in the studio he was able to purchase a Speed Graphic camera with a high-quality lens and with his new equipment began to “build” photographs of a highly experimental nature. Incorporating many of the aesthetic principles of Cubism, Newman produced straight images that border on abstraction. By isolating shapes and objects, emphasizing linearity, and maximizing the visual effects of light and shadow, he created images of remarkable beauty and compositional rigor. -
