SAN JOSE MUSEUM OF ART TO PRESENT MILTON ROGOVIN’S PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE WORKING CLASS AUGUST 18 ‒ MARCH 19 SAN JOSE, California (August 2016)— The San Jose Museum of Art will showcase the work of American photographer Milton Rogovin in an exhibition on view August 18, 2016 – March 19, 2017. Life and Labor: The Photographs of Milton Rogovin comprises thirty-eight black-and-white photographs by the self-proclaimed social documentary photographer. Rogovin photographed “the forgotten ones,” as he called them, including people from working class neighborhoods and multi-ethnic communities. Drawn entirely from the permanent collection of the San Jose Museum of Art, this exhibition presents photographs from three series: “Lower West Side, Buffalo” “Working People” and “Family of Miners” Life and Labor marks the public debut of these photographs, which were given to the Museum’s collection in 2011. Rogovin shed light on important social issues of the time: the plight of miners, the decline of the steel industry in upstate New York, and the everyday struggles of the poor and working class in Buffalo, New York, where he lived. While working as an optometrist in the 1930s, he was distressed by the widespread poverty caused by the Great Depression and became increasingly involved in leftist political causes. He began attending classes at the New York Workers School and reading the Communist newspaper The Daily Worker. He was influenced by the social- documentary photographs of Jacob Riis and Lewis Hine. In 1957, with the prevalence of cold war anti-Communism in the United States, Rogovin was called before the House Un-American Activities Committee, but refused to testify. -

FACT SHEET / FEBRUARY 2018 Indigenous People of Western New York Kristin Szczepaniec Territorial Acknowledgement In keeping with regional protocol, I would like to start by acknowledging the traditional territory of the Haudenosaunee and by honoring the sovereignty of the Six Nations–the Mohawk, Cayuga, Onondaga, Oneida, Seneca and Tuscarora–and their land where we are situated and where the majority of this work took place. In this acknowledgement, we hope to demonstrate respect for the treaties that were made on these territories and remorse for the harms and mistakes of the far and recent past; and we pledge to work toward partnership with a spirit of reconciliation and collaboration. The collection is active. Quantity/ Extent 1 linear foot Language of Materials English Biographical Note Milton Rogovin was born in New York City in 1909 where he graduated from Columbia University in 1931 with a degree in optometry. He soon after moved to Buffalo, New York. Rogovin purchased his first camera in 1942 and later taught documentary photography at the University of Buffalo from 1972-1974, where he also received an MA in American Studies in 1972. His photographic work focused on social activism, and in 1983 he won the prestigious W. Eugene Smith Award for Documentary photography, which allowed him to travel internationally to continue his “Family of Miners” series. Rogovin died in 2011. Scope and Content Note There are three boxes that have not yet been arranged and described at the series level. Materials include correspondence, publications, transcripts, and a wide variety of audiovisual materials, including mostly U-matic tapes and audiotapes. How Western New York Gave Wings to the World --by M.E. Sterns ON AUGUST 25, 1886, there was a report in the Buffalo Courier concerning a paper read before the American Association for the Advancement of Science, whose 35th annual meeting was held in Buffalo that summer. The paper, presented by a Mr. Lancaster, was on the subject of flight and the newspaper article noted that: "Some of the members of the association seem to be in a quandary as to whether Mr. Lancaster is a crank; or a sharp practical joker who has been giving the great association of America's savants guff. On Monday, as has been duly reported, they quite unanimously joined in reviling and laughing at him." "An early Curtiss Pusher in a mowed hay field. Some of them flew, some of them didn't." So was the subject of flight treated by some of the nation's most progressive scientific minds in 1886. Fortunately, however, there were some who disagreed with the scientists of the time on the matter of flight --- men who could already see in their mind's eye the "flying contraptions" that were soon to be a reality. A group of these early air age enthusiasts lived in Buffalo during the latter part of the last century, and beginning with them, Western New York became an area where many of aviation's great firsts were performed or developed. MOST OF THESE MEN originally belonged to one of the many cycling clubs that were formed in the Buffalo area in the late 1800's, among them the Buffalo Bicycle Club (sometimes known as the High Wheel Club), the Press Cycling Club, the Ramblers, the East Side Cyclers and the Eldredge Club, of Tonawanda. -

Recent past exhibitions from the collection have focused on specific artists (Paul T. Sargent, Herbert Fink), movements (American Scene prints), suites (Fred Jones' "A Midwest Portfolio"),· or other special collections (Folk Arts, Plucked Chicken Press prints). This exhibition draws on works which share the same supporting. medium as a means to highlight works which, in most cases, are not part of developed collection sub-divisions, but play a meaningful role in the building of a teaching collection. (EDS) conducted a Current Condition Assessment (Assessment) and Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties (Standards) review for the 1903 Forni House (house) and associated ca. 1905 converted barn (converted barn) located at 1551 Oak Avenue, St. Helena, Napa County, California within Assessor’s Parcel Number (APN) 009-222-001-000 (Project Area) (Figure 1). The property owner is currently considering proposed alterations to the 1903 house and converted barn, and construction of a new detached garage (Project). The building is listed on the Napa County Historic Resource Inventory (HRI) and is listed on the 2012 Office of Historic Preservation Historic Properties Directory (HPD) and is therefore considered a historical resource for the purposes of the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA). Therefore, due to potential impacts to historical resources, the City of St. Helena requested an Assessment and Standards review to be conducted in compliance with the CEQA and to assist in the local decision-making process regarding the proposed Project.
