As many of you know, John Schilling (Ed1tor of this Newsletter amongst other things) was stricken with a major heart attack on July 1. His condition is serious , but he is showing improvement. Cards and notes would be appreciated (c/o Martha's Vineyard Hospital) but he is still too weak for visitors. All of us (particularly today' s Editor) wish him a speedy and healthy recovery. VICE PRESIDENT'S VISIT

Vi ce President Humphrey may visit Woods Hole and the Institution late this month. The present plans (which have already been revised five or six times) call for the Vice President to spend about a day at sea aboard ATLANTIS II and to visit all the scientific Institutions in Woods Hole.

REVISED PARKING ARRANGEMENTS

Construction activities for the new pier together with the loading and off loading of Institution vessels has created extremely congested traffic conditions in the dock area. It has therefore become necessary to change the parking arrangements behind the Main Building and LO. Your cooperation in observing the following will be appreciated:

1. No Institution Cars or trucks, except the mail truck, and no personal vehicles shall be parked in the dock area at any time.

2. Institution cars and trucks will be parked in designated areas in the LO lot. Employee vehicles may be parked in the LO lot if space is available.

PIER PROGRESS

Pile driving has been completed in section A and piles filled with concrete. Work is progressing in section B and approaching the point where pipe size will increase from 14" diameter to 16" diameter.

For better efficiency I another barge has been towed to the job site to accomodate the smaller P&H crane'; that had been working from shoreside. It will work alongside the other rig handling material so that the larger crane can concentrate on driving.

Pile caps are being formed and poured in section A; forms for the deck and utility trench are in the process of erection. Before the deck forms are set, rip rap must be completed and this is being done as soon as the pile cap forms are stripped. The cOntractor is working on the basis of having A and B sections of the pier available for use by the 26th of July.

In the small boat area the sheet pile bulkhead has been driven except for the breakwater. Work is in progress of driving battered H beams to form anchors for the seawall. Once the bulkhead is completed, construction of the timber piers for small boats will start.

A few days have been lost because of northeast storms, but the tempo of the project is picking up and it is hoped that a certain amount of lost time can be regained.

NSIA MEETING

The Executive Committee, staff, and other members of the National Security Industrial Association will hold their Seventh Joint Meeting at the Institution on July 13 and 14. Dr. Fye will welcome the group at their first session in the LMS Auditorium. A tour of the InstitUtion has been scheduled for Friday afternoon.

GOVERNOR CURTIS' VISIT

Governor Curtis of Maine and Dr. James S. Coles, President of Bowdoin College and one of our Trustees, plan to visit the Institution on July 20. Governor Curtis wishes to become better aquainted wfth our research activities and facilities.

STAFF AND STUDENT LOUNGE

A temporary staff and student lounge has been established in the front half of the LO Conference room. It is open to all hands, and it is hoped that it will be a useful room for'itlfortna'I crtse;g:g;S'iot}S of hl}cfividua~I:s or 's~ttral:1 grdupi'h c The entrance is in the passageway from the lobby of the LO, just beyond the stereo bottom photos.
