Today, I am drifting the seagrass flats in Estero Bay. The sun is slowly heating up the boat deck; I smile. My quarry is spotted seatrout, Cynoscion nebulosus, one of the many fish species critical to southwest Florida's estuaries. Since seatrout spend their entire lives in a single estuary, they are subjected the estuary's changing environmental factors, which makes them ideal as environmental indicators. The trout I'm hoping to catch today will be brought back to the laboratory in an attempt to relate the changes in their WHO WILL EVER growth history to the water-quality of Estero Bay over the past several years.
