Abstract In this paper, we present a thematic analysis of broadcast and print media representations of YouTube celebrity. Youth-oriented media have capitalised on the phenomenon, placing vloggers alongside actors and pop stars. However, in much adult-oriented mainstream media, YouTubers are presented as fraudulent, inauthentic, opportunist and talentless, making money from doing nothing. Key themes recur in coverage, including YouTubers’ presumed lack of talent and expertise, the alleged dangers they present and the argument that they are not ‘really famous’. YouTubers’ claims to fame are thus simultaneously legitimised by giving them coverage and delegitimised within said coverage, echoing media treatment of other ‘amateur’ celebrities such as reality stars and citizen journalists.

  • Social Media Celebrity and the Institutionalization of Youtube
Article Convergence: The International Journal of Research into Social media celebrity and the New Media Technologies 2019, Vol. 25(3) 534–553 institutionalization of YouTube ª The Author(s) 2018 Article reuse guidelines: sagepub.com/journals-permissions DOI: 10.1177/1354856517750368 Mingyi Hou journals.sagepub.com/home/con Tilburg University, The Netherlands Abstract This study explores the industrial underpinning and the cultural logic of social media celebrity. Social media visibility may be considered as an alternative way to fame as it bypasses the gatekeeper role played by the entertainment and mass media industries. However, the institutionalization of social media platforms like YouTube and the professionalization of amateur content creation may lead to social media becoming a new locale for industrialized celebrity manufacturing. Taking YouTube beauty vloggers as an example, this study shows that being a celebrity on social media is economically embedded in an industrial structure constituted by the platform’s business model, technical affordances, the advertising market, and commercial cultural intermediaries. Social media celebrity’s status is achieved not only through a set of affiliative, representational, and celeb- rification techniques, but also by engaging in meticulous entrepreneurial calculation considering the abovementioned industrial factors. This emerging industrial structure is associated with a new cultural logic of celebrity that distinguishes the fame native to social media from that on the silver screen and

  • Baudrillard Discussion Points
Online Media Read and make notes on the following discussion: How can the ideas of Baudrillard be used in an exam response? Baudrillard proclaims modern society has become so media saturated it is impossible for audiences to experience the natural or real world. The media instead constructs an imaginary space that celebrates stardom and celebrity. Baudrillard calls this the ‘simulacrum’ – a simulated world, a hyperreality in which constructed imagery replaces realism – in which the abundance of images the media subjects us to are deliberately manicured to produce an escape from reality. To what extent do online media products contribute towards Baudrillard’s notion of hyperreality? Online media can be seen to escalate the celebrity culture. When we go online, we become inundated with media content. The World Wide Web is the ultimate simulacrum – the ultimate distraction from the real world. A great deal of online media content also reinforces the cult of celebrity, presenting celebrity gossip as news and co-opting us into consuming and distributing the ideal imagery of the simulacrum. We might perceive that online vlogs, with their drive for authenticity – their deliberate amateurism – are constructed in a manner that punctures Baudrillard’s notion of the simulacrum. Are we not being presented with real people doing real things when we tune in to online vlogs? Zoella and Pointless Blog are positioned as the authentic voice of their audiences; their everyday personas are arguably constructed as antidotes to contemporary celebrity culture. Really? Zoella and Alfie are two of the biggest stars of youth culture today? The fame and wealth of Zoe Sugg and Alfie Deyes has most certainly elevated them to celebrity status – despite their insistence to the contrary and their self-deprecating presentation style.

  • An Automedia Analysis of Social Media Influencers
Stream: Inspiring Critical Thought 2019, Vol 11(1), 3–20 © The Author(s), 2019 http://journals.sfu.ca/stream “Celebrate your bloom story”: An Automedia Analysis of Social Media Influencers Alora Paulsen Mulvey Department of Communication, Media and Film University of Calgary Abstract Using 27-year-old Canadian beauty blogger Estée Lalonde as a site of automedia analysis (Maguire 2015), this paper argues that through the enactment of domestic femininity in the public sphere, social media influencers embody postfeminist ideals of individual empowerment while selling their branded selves through networked intimacy (Abidin 2015; Gill, 2016). Methodologically, I approach the case study with an understanding of the intersection between online platforms of the intersection between online platforms, life writing, and constructions of the self. Using cross-promotion, scheduled posts, and self-branding, influencers create a cohesive branded self, emphasizing perceived authenticity and a sense of community among followers. The exercise of self-branding is used to gain cultural and material capital (Hearn, 2008). Understanding postfeminism as an analytical lens through which we can problematize media texts (Gill, 2016), I argue that influencer marketing privileges a one-dimensional, postfeminist representation of an empowered young woman following her life’s passion (Duffy & Hund, 2015). Keywords: postfeminism, influencer marketing, self-branding, femininity. Paulsen Mulvey 4 Estée Lalonde is a 27-year-old Canadian living in London, UK. At 19, she packed her bags and moved across the world to be with her boyfriend at the time. After spending a year in university but being unsure of what she wanted to do with her life, she started a beauty blog and later a YouTube channel, as a way to socialize and share her love of beauty products – a passion which had previously taken roots while working retail part-time (Lalonde, 2016a).
