Many of the prints are engravings, some are lithographs, and a small selection are reproductions printed during a later period. The collection also includes personal correspondence, medical certificates and photographs of members of LACMA. The materials date from 1644 to 1946, although the bulk of the material dates from the late 18th to early 19th centuries. The collection covers topics including medicine, health, pharmaceuticals, patent medicines, quacks and quackery spanning over five centuries, as well as social perspectives on both the practices and practitioners in these fields. Language of Material: Materials are predominantly in English, but also French and Latin. Immediate Source of Acquisition On long-term loan from the Los Angeles County Medical Association, 1992. Biographical / Historical The Los Angeles County Medical Association was founded on January 31, 1871 by a group of 7 physicians, including Dr. Levi Dorr, Dr. William Edgar, Dr. John Griffin, Dr. Henry Orme, Dr. T. H. Rose, and Dr. Joseph Widney. Over the remainder of the 19th century the group contributed to the founding of several medical institutions in Southern California, including the first hospitals and clinics in Los Angeles, and in 1885 the medical school at the University of Southern California, with Joseph Widney serving as dean. In 1891, Joseph Widney would become president of USC while remaining dean of the medical school. In addition to curing disease and caring for patients, the organization today emphasizes its commitment to social advocacy for physicians by battling escalating healthcare costs, intervening in malpractice lawsuits, and defending the autonomy of physicians. Scope and Contents The Los Angeles County Medical Association (LACMA) collection of prints and ephemera is a collection of prints and ephemera collected by LACMA. It contains over 200 printed items related to the medical profession, including satirical prints, medical curiosities, significant figures in the history of medicine, architectural views of hospitals, and the early years of LACMA itself. Many of the prints are engravings, some are lithographs, and a small selection are reproductions printed during a later period. The collection also includes personal correspondence, medical certificates and photographs of members of LACMA. The materials date from 1644 to 1946, although the bulk of the material dates from the late 18th to early 19th centuries. Noted artists from the collection include British caricaturists Isaac Cruikshank and Thomas Rowlandson, French engraver Pierre Roch Vigneron, German portrait artist Adolf Eckstein, and French anatomist, painter, and printmaker Jacques Fabian Gautier d'Agoty. Materials are arranged by genre or item type, and prints are loosely grouped topically: British caricatures, medical curiosities, portraits, architectural prints, and general medical prints. Prints are described at the item-level, with artists, printers, and publishers indexed by name when available. Manuscripts, photographs, and ephemera are described at the folder level and include a variety of materials, including trade cards, medical advertisements, booklets, leaflets, periodicals, and printed billheads and letterheads (with and without manuscript text). Notable items include a series of obituaries (from approximately 1938) concerning the death of Dr. Joseph Pomeroy Widney, co-founder and second president of the Los Angeles County Medical priLACMA 2 Association Collection of Prints and Ephemera priLACMA University of Southern California (Box 4 (3)); a 1789 manuscript import certificate regarding surgical instruments imported from London for the Pennsylvania Hospital (Box 4(4)); and an 1880 photo business card (printed in both English and Spanish) for physician and surgeon Dr. Tom She Ben, a Chinese doctor who practiced medicine in late 19th-century Los Angeles (Box 4(6)). A scrapbook assembled in approximately 1920 by members of LACMA contains print and manuscript material related to "Doctors and Specialists," as well as a specimen of human hair. The collection offers information regarding medicine, health, pharmaceuticals, patent medicines, quacks and quackery spanning over five centuries, as well as social perspectives on both the practices and practitioners in these fields. Also of particular interest are the medical curiosities prints. The images document the history of medical practitioners, methods, and materials in Britain and the United States as well as ailments and illnesses common during this period. Several items also help document the professionalization of medicine in Southern California. As graphic materials, the collection highlights developing techniques and trends in printmaking while documenting the artists, engravers, lithographers, printers, and publishers involved in the creative process. Appraisal During processing, a small amount of widely published mid- to late-20th century booklets and clippings were deemed out of scope and deaccessioned by the Curator for the History of Medicine and Allied Sciences. • Jay T. Processing Information In August 2019, Erin Severson, an intern through the Getty Marrow Undergraduate Internship program, identified and described the prints in Series I as well as sorted materials in Series II under the supervision of Charla DelaCuadra. Il eut une carrière exceptionnelle tant par son parcours professionnel, que par les travaux qu’il mena sur la chirurgie de la surdité. Fait extraordinaire, il réalisa la majeure partie de ses travaux dans le cadre d’une clientèle privée d’O.R.L. installé en ville à Nantes alors qu’il était en même temps professeur de chirurgie générale à l’école de médecine. Il fit ainsi des découvertes qui constituent une des bases de la spécialité actuelle. Il fut aussi l’un des premiers en France à intervenir sur l’hypophyse. Ses innovations furent mal comprises par ses confrères français. Cet accueil changea lorsqu’au lendemain de la guerre ils réalisèrent que les confrères américains les avaient adoptées. Cet homme d’exception reste peu connu en France, alors qu’il eut une réputation internationale, fit partie de l’Académie de Médecine et fut fortement pressenti pour obtenir le Prix Nobel. The databases were searched using various keywords such as phytotherapy, otorhinolaryngology, and herbs such as: echinacea, eucalyptus, garlic, ginkgo, ginseng, kava, pelargonium sidoides, rosemary, spirulina, St John’s wort, and thyme. Conclusions. Due to the beneficial impact of meicinal plants in medicine there is a growing interest in analytical identification and quantification for clinical medicine and forensic toxicology. A membrana timpânica (MT) constitui a única janela que nos dá acesso ao ouvido médio (OM) e, como tal, a sua aparência e comportamento fornecem-nos informações importantes acerca de eventuais alterações patológicas. A otoscopia é uma técnica fundamental que permite o acesso rápido e direto ao canal auditivo externo (CAE) e à MT, com um papel importante no diagnóstico de patologias do OM. As técnicas de observação do CAE e da MT sofreram uma extensa evolução ao longo de vários séculos. No Passado, a avaliação da MT, localizada no fundo de um canal escuro e estreito (CAE), era limitada não só pela escassez de luz como também pela reduzida acessibilidade imposta pela anatomia do canal que, por não ser retilíneo (orientação ântero-inferior) comprometia a sua observação. Os progressos na área da iluminação foram notórios com o desenvolvimento de sistemas de iluminação artificial, passando-se da utilização dos raios solares até à luz fria transportada por cabos de fibras óticas. Os espéculos auriculares, ao distenderem e horizontalizarem o CAE, contornaram o obstáculo imposto pela sua anatomia, facilitando o acesso à MT. Várias outras técnicas de observação surgiram ao longo de vários anos como a otomicroscopia e a otoendoscopia.

    Hereditary Hearing Loss Ivan Keogh I would like to discuss something that you will find interesting and stimulating about a topic that sometimes people shy away from, particularly ENT surgeons. I’m going to introduce you to hereditary hearing loss (HHL), but looking at it from the context of the history of DNA, looking at the DNA timeline, have a look at the human genome project and at the future of genetics. Human beings as we know are complex organisms with feelings and emotions, but ultimately when we look at us under the microscope you can break us down into a four letter code. You may not believe it, but up to 36% of our DNA is shared with the humble fruit fly. 84% of our DNA we share with the Zebrafish. You may not realize that 98% of our DNA is in common with our closest ancestor, the chimpanzee. Humans haven’t been around very much in the history of the earth. We only account for 0.13% of the earth’s history. Although you would think that we were around for a very long time when you look at the impact we have had on the earth over the last millennium. When things go wrong with genetics, they vary from very simple, very minor, sometimes silly things, but many people when thinking about genetics worry about things going really wrong, they worry about Orwellian-type scenarios. So where does that leave us in the world of genetics and particularly in the world of hearing loss? Well, I am going to take you on a little journey that starts back in 1815 in Ireland.

It is more than ten years since the former English translation of Pro¬ fessor Politzer’s text-book; and while that work comprised some of the improvements of the following German edition, its excellences have been far surpassed by the new presentation of the teachings of the Vienna master. He must always impress his students with the broad catho¬ licity of his views and his combination of unceasing aggressive advance with sane conservatism of judgment. So it is to be expected that this work, largely re-written, should be a safe and elaborate guide into every part of otology. The scheme of the work has been recast, with transposition of some chapters and sections into more systematic sequence; and the use of smaller type for the legs important sections gives considerable economy of space and renders less conspicuous the large additions made. The series of illustrations, previously rich and notable, has been increased by seventy-five, with substitution of new and better for not a few of those before acceptable.
