The major areas of analytical technology development involve small volume peptidomics and metabolomics. Such measurements involve enhancements to capillary electrophoresis separation methods, laser-based detection methods, MALDI sampling techniques, nanoliter volume NMR and micro/nanofluidic sampling. The second group theme relates to cell-cell signaling. This includes neuroscience (the discovery of novel neurochemical pathways, new signaling molecules, their distribution, and function in a range of animal models) as well as quorum sensing and other aspects of cell-cell signaling in microbial communities. Sweedler Page 2 PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS AT URBANA-CHAMPAIGN DIRECTOR, SCHOOL OF CHEMICAL SCIENCES (SCS) August 2012–present The School of Chemical Sciences consists of the Departments of Chemistry and Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, and has a long tradition of excellence as one of the largest and highest ranked chemical research enterprises in the world. It has a combined annual budget in excess of 25 million dollars and has more than 200 employees. Duties of the Director include direct supervision and administration of the Departments of Chemistry and Chemical and Biomolecular Chemistry, reporting to the Dean of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and oversight of the school's space, safety, human resources, and its cluster of facilities. CARVER BIOTECHNOLOGY CENTER (CBC) August 2002–August 2012 The CBC provides measurement services to the UIUC and outside communities in genomics, proteomics, metabolomics and a variety of other areas. Consisting of about 40 full-time staff, the CBC supports the research efforts of more than 280 research groups on the UIUC campus annually. Significant effort involved quadrupling the annual external funding; at the end of my tenure as director, the CBCs operating budget was >$10M/year, of which 56% derived from service revenue, 24% from campus subsidy, and 20% from off-campus sponsored funding. In 2011/2, $2M of new equipment was secured. As director, major duties also included strategic positioning of the center, the creation of new facilities, raising external funding, and a range of additional administrative duties. DIRECTOR, UIUC NEUROPROTEOMICS & NEUROMETABOLOMICS CENTER ON CELL-CELL SIGNALING August 2004–present The UIUC Neuroproteomics & Neurometabolomics Center on Cell-Cell Signaling, a NIDA-funded P30 Center, both provides new proteomics and bioinformatics measurement capabilities to the UIUC and regional neuroscience community, and advances the performance of state-of-the-art proteomics technologies to new levels. The Center employs 10+ individuals working with multiple national and international research groups, and is involved in research, training and outreach activities. December 2011–present Serving as the seventh Editor-in-Chief of Analytical Chemistry in its >90-year history; Analytical Chemistry, the highest impact and most cited journal in its field, has twenty associate editors, received ~6000 articles (published ~1800), and has a 6.3 impact factor in 2018. Responsibilities include an initial triage of manuscripts, assigning manuscripts to associate editors, writing editorials, making policy decisions, reviewing articles and promoting the journal. The editorials have been downloaded more than 200,000 times. EIC appointment renewed in 2016 for a second five-year term. October 2015–March 2016 Served as the second and interim editor of the Journal of Proteome Research (JPR) during the search for the next full time editor. Hopkins Marine Station, Stanford University Winter/Spring 1998 Worked with Prof. William Gilly to identify and study neuropeptides in cephalopods, as well as isolate and characterize several novel marine toxins and study their effects on ion channels. Manzo, WPI Humanities and Arts Department Jianyu Liang, WPI Mechanical Engineering Department Noel Hatch, London Borough of Lambeth Business Intelligence Abstract Lambeth, a central borough of London, is undergoing large population growth and a shrinking budget. This strains the Lambeth Council’s services, so they have chosen to integrate a Business Intelligence [BI] system to improve efficiency. Our project encouraged the staff who gather and use data to incorporate this BI system. After gathering information through interviews and surveys, we developed an integration plan through workshops and a poster. However, many staff members do not use the BI system due to lack of knowledge or perceived uselessness. More workshops, surveys, and interviews will aid the use of this system amongst the council. Executive Summary Business Intelligence BI is a technology-driven process for analyzing data and converting it into useful information. It has helped businesses, corporate executives, governments, councils, and the health industry among other organizations make informed decisions. Several case studies further demonstrated the usefulness of BI. A suburb in Sweden, called Jä rfä lla Kommun, implemented BI in the contact center of the municipality that improved decision making and the quality of life of its citizens. In addition, a hospital in Southern Taiwan incorporated a BI-based SQL system to streamline information and meet quality standards.

Alexandra Witze 05 June 2014 NASA Most researchers believe the Moon formed after a protoplanet struck Earth 4.5 billion years ago. A minor chemical difference between Earth and Moon rocks could have big implications for theories about how the Moon was born. Moon rocks contain a tiny bit more of the rare isotope oxygen-17 than do the rocks on Earth, say geochemists who measured oxygen using very precise methods. “It changes the nature of the debate,” says Robin Canup, a planetary scientist at the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colorado, who was not involved in the study. “If the difference between Earth and the Moon is a small amount as opposed to zero, we need to know that.” Most researchers think that the Moon formed in the very early days of the Solar System, 4.5 billion years ago, when a large protoplanet smashed into the embryonic Earth. Debris from the collision mingled together and then settled into orbit around Earth, where it coalesced into the Moon. If that were the case, however, scientists would expect to see more of the remains of the original impactor in the Moon. The chemistry of Moon rocks would be different from that of Earth rocks. “The big question was always, why do we not see this difference, why are Earth and the Moon so similar?” says Daniel Herwartz, an isotope geochemist at the University of Cologne in Germany and a member of the study team.
