These days, pilgrims use this document to have access to hostels as colleting stamps from the different stages to prove their pilgrimage. In Oviedo, you can get the accrediting document in the following locations: pilgrim’s hostel, Cathedral and Basilica San Juan el Real. We can also help to provide it. HOSTELS The usual accommodation for the way of Saint James is in hostels. They do not accept bookings, but provide accommodation on a first come, first served basis, giving priority to walkers, the disabled, horse riders and cyclists, in this order. Guests are required to respect the corresponding internal rules, opening hours, hygiene, let others rest and contribute to a spirit of peaceful coexistence. BACKPACK The choice of backpack is one of the key points. The normal weight limit for backpacks is 10% of our body weight: in any case, not more than 8 kilos for women and 10 for men. Footwear is another important choice. You should use practical and comfortable shoes. St Jame’s way is a hiking activity. It is important to break them in at home and not wear them for the first time on the pilgrimage. HEALTH ADVICE The way of Saint James requires extra effort in relation to daily life. This is the reason why you should pay attention to your diet and healthcare. 9 You are strongly recommended to have a simple medical checkup, so you can know you are in good shape and that exercise will not harm you. For this activity we recommend you to bring as foodstuffs something with high sugar content, such as nuts and dried fruits, chocolate, sweets, bread and drink in your backpack, also for snacks. You should have a light lunch. You can make good use of the ‘pilgrim’ menus served in many bars. These meals are modest but reasonably priced. The heaviest meal should be dinner, rich in proteins, after you have finished the day’s stage. It is very important to drink a large quantity of liquid, above all water. It is the only drink which really avoids dehydration. Energy drinks are a good idea too. You should also look for shade during all the time. Sun in August can be strong. Stop whenever necessary along the way.
