Para-Table Tennis Information Sheet About the Sport Para-table tennis was included in the first Paralympic Games in 1960. Athletes compete either in standing or sitting (wheelchair) classes. Men and women compete individually and in doubles, as well as in team events. A match comprises five sets of 11 points each. The winner is the player or pair winning three of the five sets. The rules of the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) also apply to the Paralympic table tennis competitions with slight modifications regarding the serve rules for athletes who compete in a wheelchair. Who can compete? Para-Table Tennis is open to athletes with a physical or intellectual impairment. Athletes are required to submit medical reports and meet the minimum impairment criteria in order to compete. Eligible Description Minimum Impairment Criteria impairments Leg: loss of at least 1/3 of a foot Partial or complete absence of Playing arm: loss of more than 1 bones or joints due to Loss of limbs finger. amputation or deficiency from birth Non-Playing arm: loss of at least 2/3 forearm. Leg: loss of strength in a hip, knee or Muscle weakness or paralysis ankle that impacts on table tennis Muscle from conditions such as Playing Arm: weakness of the hand weakness/ muscular dystrophy, multiple that affects table tennis, such as grip Impaired muscle sclerosis, nerve damage, spinal and power. power cord injury or other spinal condition Non-Playing Arm: weakness of the arm Impairments from neurological Co-ordination conditions such as acquired brain impairments - injury, cerebral palsy and Co-ordination or movement Hypertonia, multiple sclerosis that affect co- difficulties in at least one arm or leg Ataxia, ordination and smoothness of Athetosis movement and balance. -

Hansard Questions on Notice - Joint Standing Committee on the National Capital and External Territories Question 1 Mr SNOWDON: What interaction is there between the AIS and the University of Canberra? What cooperation exists between the two organisations? What research takes place with the AIS on behalf of the University of Canberra or vice versa? Mr SNOWDON: Would you mind providing us, on notice, with a list of all those things you participate with them in? Mrs Palmer: Broadly with universities or just the University of Canberra? Mr SNOWDON: All of them would be great, so we understand what that interaction is. ANSWER: • The Australia Institute of Sport (AIS) has partnerships in place with a total of 19 Universities. • 15 of these partnerships involve supporting PhD Scholarship placements whereby students undertake research projects focusing on an identified high performance sport topic as agreed with the AIS, the University and a respective sport. The student is primarily based at the AIS Canberra campus accessing site facilities, engaging with AIS expertise and interacting with the sport involved in the research project. • The nature of some partnerships, such as with the University of Canberra, also involve joint appointments of staff to undertake a schedule of work with mutual benefits for the AIS and the university. • The AIS collaborates with universities such as LaTrobe in the field of computer/ machine vision; and University of Canberra in the field of statistics and data analytics. • In some cases the partnership also involves the AIS accessing specialised facilities such as the Environmental Chamber (University of Canberra) and the Wind Tunnel (Monash University). -

RICHARD COLBECK OUR EMERGING Welcome to the 2019 AIS Sport Performance Awards. For many of Australia’s athletes, their families and supporters, coaches and high performance ATHLETES staff, the next seven months leading into Tokyo 2020 represents the culmination of years of training, competing and dreaming. For everyday Australians, athletes in the green and gold on the international stage play a crucial role in motivating and inspiring us to get active and involved in physical activity. That’s why ‘achieving sporting excellence’ is a key priority of the Federal Government’s National Sport Plan, Sport 2030. Built around the pillars of participation, performance, integrity and industry, Sport 2030 is our clear and bold vision for sport in Australia — to ensure we are the world’s most active and healthy nation, known for our integrity and sporting success. Australia’s success on the international stage depends on a united and collaborative high performance sports system. Last month, I joined with Ministers of Sport from around the country to approve the historic National High Performance Sport Strategy 2024 (NHPSS). Approval of the NHPSS signals the first time all states and territories have agreed to an aligned high performance strategy and is recognition of a unified Australian system. With input from across sport led by the AIS, along with State and Territory Institutes and Academies of Sport, the NHPSS demonstrates the value of collaboration between the various governments of Australia to foster a shared approach to investment, responsibility and accountability.
