Everyone who has been a volunteer will know that thank you is very hard to come by but criticism is always present. I thank the CEO of TTA Peter Marriott and staff for their support and ability to achieve outcomes with very little resource. The board has seen some change this year with the appointment of Jenny Han and Claire Montgomery. Jenny fills one of the two appointed positions available and Claire was appointed by the board after the resignation of Phil Davis. I thank Phil Davis for his commitment and contribution to TTA over a number of years. While the board has had changes, I feel the mix is one which can take us forward and as it contains a mix of youth and experience as well as being gender neutral. While we always miss our members who have passed away, none was more significant than David Beaumont. David was a long serving member on the board of TTA and a huge influence in TTNSW. We will all miss him as he was a good friend and supporter to all. Over the past few years the board of TTA has worked closely with the States to deliver outcomes which benefit all. The presidents teleconferences continue to be a valuable tool to continue to communicate and discuss current items of interest. It is my observation that we currently enjoy a good relationship with the States and I hope to continue to foster this atmosphere of co-operation. Every part of the business of TTA has seen changes and continues to evolve. The veterans this year had the largest number of entries; we had the Korean team and Chinese team competing against Australia in a test match in Parliament House (the first ever sporting event held there). The men’s and ladies teams both did well in the World teams championships with the Women’s team improving from 35th to 25th in the world rankings by winning their division and qualifying for division one. The men’s team also moved up 10 positions from 50th to 35th in the world rankings. Our future high performance is now focused on the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014 and 2018 with the announcement of the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast. I am extremely pleased our membership has risen by 9.5% and currently stands at over 9000 members. There is no reason we can’t continue to grow our membership as we encapsulate groups of players previously not included. We have been active in gaining sponsorship and have formed a sponsorship committee .There are a number of deals currently being negotiated which if fruitful will improve our ability to support the players and the membership. I have left the AWD programme to the last because it continues to be supported by the Australian Paralympics committee and as so is our most highly supported programme. I thank Sue Stevenson and her team and players for their hard work and dedication and wish you success for the future. I thank the continued support by the Australian Sports Commission, the Australian Commonwealth Games Association who is without doubt supporting our non Para high performance programme more than anyone else. The Australian Olympic Committee and of course the Australian Paralympics committee who I have previously mentioned. TTA is holding the AGM in 2013 in Adelaide. I look forward to meeting the State representatives with the opportunity of healthy discussion on the current needs of our members at the development forum. 5 2012 TABLE TENNIS AUSTRALIA ANNUAL REPORT CEO Report Peter Marriott 2012 was a big year as predicted with both the Olympic and Paralympic Games being held in 2012. Australia was represented with a maximum compliment of players at the London Olympic Games and was well represented with 2 athletes at the London Paralympic Games. All of our players and coaching staff did Australia proud, at the Olympic Games all of our players won their first match and no player lost to a player ranked below them. William Henzell had a career best performance defeating players ranked 100 spots in front of him to reach the round of 32. Melissa Tapper was out standout performer at the Paralympic Games narrowly losing the bronze medal match in the women’s Class 10 bronze medal playoff. Achievements in 2012 As mentioned above Australia was represented at the Olympic Games with the maximum number of athletes possible, William Henzell, Justin Han, Robert Frank, Jian Fang Lay, Miao Miao and Vivian (Tan) Dederko qualified for the Olympic Games through an exhaustive Australian and Oceania Olympic Qualification process. Jens Lang and Paul Langley were selected as the Coach and Section Manager respectively. A special note to congratulate Jian and Miao on being selected for their 4th Olympic Games. Melissa Tapper and Rebecca McDonnell represented Australia at the Paralympic Games in Class 10 and Class 6 events respectively. Alois Rosario was selected as the Coach of the team and was assisted by Roger Massie as the Section Manager/Coach. With regards

After the first two she must have wondered if she was going to win anything at all. With partner Nathan Lowe she had been beaten in the mixed doubles final by Australian rival Miao Miao and her partner William Henzell. Then in the women’s final with Yang Sun she lost to Jian Fang Lay partnered again by Miao Miao. However Li was able to quickly put those losses aside and win the final she really wanted – beating Miao Miao in a hard fought four games to two battle for the women’s singles title.

  • The Chinese Experience in Australia
The Chinese Experience in Australia © ASIA Volume 43 Number 2 79 The Chinese Experience in Australia – A Brief Outline for Stages 3– 5 by Di Dunlop dward Hargraves returned to Australia from California in 1851 where he had experienced the Efrenzy of the Gold Rushes in California. He had previously been at Bathurst in New South Wales and believed that the local rock formations resembled what he had seen in California. He spent time panning in Bathurst, and found gold. On 15 May 1851 the discovery was announced and workers flocked to the area to make their fortunes. By August of that year the interest had shifted to Victoria, because Thomas Hiscock had discovered gold on the rich alluvial flats at Ballarat. Both Geelong and Melbourne were almost emptied of men. By the end of the same year news of the discoveries had spread around the world. Hopefuls came from Ireland, Scotland, England and America. By the end of 1853 the decline in income of the alluvial digger caused him to perceive a wider significance in the difference between the equality and mateship of the goldfields, Banner from 1860 and 1861 anti-Chinese rebellion on the Lambing Flat goldfields, now present day Young, NSW. The resignation of Bronwyn Marshall and her successor Ross Sy- monds did little for the stability of the office .We also lost the services of our administration officer Dan- nette Taylor. Since then we have been very successful in placing new staff in the vacant positions. Peter Marriott the new CEO is very qualified and brings many positives to the position with his experience with baseball and water polo. Tracey Cossi the new administration officer also has many years experience in sport management. Sue Stevenson continues to provide the long term stability to the office and I thank her for her dedication to table tennis.

  • Joint Standing Committee on the National Capital and External Territories Question 1
Hansard Questions on Notice - Joint Standing Committee on the National Capital and External Territories Question 1 Mr SNOWDON: What interaction is there between the AIS and the University of Canberra? What cooperation exists between the two organisations? What research takes place with the AIS on behalf of the University of Canberra or vice versa? Mr SNOWDON: Would you mind providing us, on notice, with a list of all those things you participate with them in? Mrs Palmer: Broadly with universities or just the University of Canberra? Mr SNOWDON: All of them would be great, so we understand what that interaction is. ANSWER: • The Australia Institute of Sport (AIS) has partnerships in place with a total of 19 Universities. • 15 of these partnerships involve supporting PhD Scholarship placements whereby students undertake research projects focusing on an identified high performance sport topic as agreed with the AIS, the University and a respective sport. The student is primarily based at the AIS Canberra campus accessing site facilities, engaging with AIS expertise and interacting with the sport involved in the research project. • The nature of some partnerships, such as with the University of Canberra, also involve joint appointments of staff to undertake a schedule of work with mutual benefits for the AIS and the university. • The AIS collaborates with universities such as LaTrobe in the field of computer/ machine vision; and University of Canberra in the field of statistics and data analytics. • In some cases the partnership also involves the AIS accessing specialised facilities such as the Environmental Chamber (University of Canberra) and the Wind Tunnel (Monash University).
