The Waterboys – out of All This Blue (3LP The Waterboys – Out Of All This Blue (3LP Deluxe Edition) (2:17:00, 3LP, BMG, 2017) The Waterboys sind Mike Scott – Mike Scott ist The Waterboys. Das sollte man über den musikalischen Weltenbummler wissen. Er fühlt sich sowohl in Folk und Country, als auch in Wave, Indie, Soul und Blues zu Hause. Kategorien waren nie Scotts Ding, und so hat er sich über fast 40 Jahre immer seine Relevanz bewahrt. Vergangenes Jahr hat der inzwischen 59-jährige Schotte zum zweiten Mal geheiratet. Vermutlich war es dann auch seine neue Liebe, die japanische Künstlerin Megumi Igarashi, die Scott maßgeblich zu diesem Doppel- bzw. Dreifach-Album inspiriert hat. 24 neue Songs und zusätzlich 10 Variationen eben dieser zeugen von Scotts emotionalen Kreativitäts-Hoch. Selten hat man so viel positive Energie aus seiner Musik heraus gehört. Stilistisch bedient er quasi die komplette Bandbreite seines musikalischen Schaffens, was „Out Of All This Blue“ zu einem ausgesprochen abwechslungsreichen Vergnügen macht. Musikalische Höhepunkte sind das an die wavigen Anfänge der Waterboys erinnernde Epos ‚Morning Came To soon‘, ‚Didn’t We Walk On Water‘ mit leichten Seventies-Disco Reminiszenzen, oder auch das kantige ‚Elegant Companion‘. Zwar gehen dem frisch verliebten Mike Scott bei zwei bis drei Nummern auch Mal die Pferde durch, was bei der Fülle der Songs aber verzeihlich ist. Einziger kleiner Wermutstropen ist die Abwesenheit eines Drummers aus Fleisch und Blut. Zwar passen die Drum-Loops durchweg gut zu den Songs und unterstreichen die workshop-artige und spontane Attitüde des Albums, doch ein Schlagzeuger hätte dem einen oder anderen Song eventuell noch einen extra Kick gegeben. Die dritte LP mit dem Untertitel „Blue Variations“ ist eine nette Dreingabe, bietet jedoch nichts wirklich essentielles mehr. In Deutschland macht der Schotte auf der anstehenden Tour mit Duisburg und Hamburg leider nur zwei mal Station. So werden sich viele Fans wohl mit dem auch optisch und haptisch sehr ansprechenden Album begnügen müssen. Nachdem das Vorgänger- Abum von 2014 ein wenig bieder ausgefallen war, ist Scott seinem aktuellen Output wieder „back on track“. „Out Of All This Blue“ kann sich locker mit Karriere-Highlights wie „Fisherman’s Blues“ oder „This is The Sea“ messen. Da auch Klang- und Pressqualität absolut im grünen Bereich sind, gibt es eine Kaufempfehlung mit Ausrufezeichen. Consequentially, while the role of album art has evolved to meet the changes in music technology, it is hard to measure the effect of digital streaming on modern album art. This research seeks to determine whether or not graphic design still plays a role in marketing information about the music, such as its genre, to the consumer. It does so through two studies: 1. A computer visual analysis that measures color dominance of an image, and 2. A mixed-design lab experiment with volunteer participants who attempt to assess the genre of a given album. Findings from the first study show that color scheme models created from album samples cannot be used to predict the genre of an album. Further findings from the second theory show that consumers pay a significant amount of attention to album covers, enough to be able to correctly assess the genre of an album most of the time.
