As was the case with the preceding SILSE conferences, there was no prescribed theme of the contributions. Scholars were invited to present their latest research in the fields of Linguistics and Literature without being limited to a specific topic. The present volume thus reflects the current research trends in Central Europe, namely Germany, Poland, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic. Following the structure of the conference, the current volume has been divided into two sections with 8 papers in the Linguistics section and 13 in the Literature section. The Chicago Manual of Style was chosen as the reference style for the proceedings; papers on linguistics use the author-date system, whilst the literary papers use footnotes. When it comes to electronic sources, the access dates are not provided, as all the links were checked by the editors to be fully functional at the time of publishing. To provide fast and easy aceess to the volume, it will be produced not only in print but also in PDF form on the Institute of Foreign Languages webpage. Similarly to previous years, the volume does not include all papers presented at the conference. While some participants did not meet the deadlines for submitting their contributions, others did not reach the required quality standard and their contributions were not accepted for publishing. All the papers published are full-length research articles. We would like to express our thanks to the Institute of Foreign Languages the reviewers, the organizers, and the participants, who created an excellent atmosphere and made the conference a memorable and successful event. I. LINGUISTICS A CASE STUDY IN VERBS OPERATING IN THE PRESENTATION AND/OR QUALITY SCALE RESPECTIVELY: BUZZ AND SEIZE Martin Adam ABSTRACT: The present, corpus-based paper sets out to explore the cardinal role of the English transitional verb within the sentence perspective. In the framework of Firbasian theory of FSP, sentences implement either Presentation or Quality Scale; many transitional verbs generally appear to be capable of acting within both the scales. The paper, being a pilot study of intended research, strives to examine the syntactic and semantic qualities of the verbs buzz and seize, and to show under what conditions they tend to operate in one of the dynamic semantic scales. Model sentences, extracted from the British National Corpus through Sketch Engine concordance, will be contrasted and discussed in terms of their presentational/qualitative features. KEYWORDS: FSP, scale, presentation, quality, verb, Sketch Engine, BNC 1. INTRODUCTION Recent research into FSP (viz. Dušková 2015, 256-68; Chamonikolasová et al. 2015; Adam 2013; 2014) has indicated that the syntactic-semantic characteristics of the English transitional verb plays a crucial role within the overall sentence perspective. In the framework of Firbasian theory of FSP, sentences implement either Presentation or Quality Scale (Firbas 1992, 66-9); it follows that – under favourable conditions – most verbs generally appear to be capable of acting within both the dynamic semantic scales. It has become clear, however, that certain verbs tend to operate in one of the scales, mainly thanks to their syntactic and semantic properties – e.g., the verb qualities related to (in)transitivity, complementation etc. (e.g., Adam 2011; 2013). The current research findings have shown that the most promising step at this point will be a case analysis of individual verbs that appeared in both the scales within the corpora that were under discussion in previous studies (see esp. Adam 2013). It is believed that examining their syntactic-semantic properties one by one may shed light not only on potential common denominators but also functional differences. 2. RESEARCH QUESTIONS The present corpus-based paper offers a pilot case study of intended large-scale research that sets off to examine the syntactic and semantic qualities of the verbs buzz and seize, and to show under what conditions they tend to operate in one of the dynamic semantic scales. Model sentences, extracted from British National 7 Corpus (henceforward BNC)1 through SKETCH ENGINE concordance, will be contrasted and discussed in terms of their presentational / qualitative features. It should be noted at this point that so far FSP studies devoted to the nature of the English transitional verb typically seem to have been preoccupied with the investigation of verbs operating within Presentation and Quality Scales separately; if the FSP tendencies of the verbs were studied in a common context, it happened in connection to borderline cases and the questions of interpretative potentiality (Adam 2013, 105-109; 2014). Therefore, the verbs selected for the sake of this study represent such items that appeared in both the scales in the previously investigated corpora, and, at the same time, each of them manifested a traceable inclination to occur predominantly

Worth and Furman University, U.S. Sean McBratnie Abstract: Readers often only care about one distinction when it comes to things they read. Is it fiction or nonfiction? Did it happen or didn’t it? Presumably, we make sense of events we believe happened in a different way than we make sense of the ones that we don’t believe. Deconstructionists often warn us about the hazards that occur with the strict binary thinking we tend to orient ourselves with. When this binary is blurred, which it often is in many contemporary works of literature, readers become unsettled. It is our position that genre, and even the more broad categories of fiction and nonfiction, should not be found exclusively as properties internal to the text itself, but rather, the way we make sense of genre is an active process of narrative comprehension. We will question how the particular binary concerning fiction and nonfiction has sold us short concerning the ways in which we make sense of literary texts, and how much more fluid our notions of genre really could and should be. We also want to argue that the reduction of the binary of genre merely into fiction and nonfiction is a gross oversimplification of the ways in which we understand both genres themselves, as well as the ways in which we understand both truth and reference. Readers seem to care an awful lot about the apparent truth content of the books they choose. Is it fiction or non-fiction? Did it happen or did it not? Presumably, readers make sense of events they believe happened in a differ- ent way than they make sense of the ones that they don’t believe happened.

  • Florida Fandom 2011: 35Th Anniversary Issue
    Welcome to the first print issue of Florida Fandom since 1996 or a close to print issue. This will be published as a PDF e-zine, I will print at least one print issue for old time sake. I’m writing this in word 2007 and most of the graphic were done on The Print Shop or The Print Shop 3.0. A big jump from the first issue done on an electric typewriter, cut up and pasted on to graft paper that wouldn’t reproduce when printed. Over the years we have used many formats in creating FF. Most of the issues were done on typewriter, although we did try several early issues using a Commodore 64 computer and dot matrix printer. They were not very easy to read and the computer was used mostly for making graphics using The Print Shop for C-64 and The Print Shop Companion for the C-64. After we went to ink jet we did to a couple of issues – using MS Publisher – they even had some scanned pictures in them. In just 15 years computers have changed. With my laser printer I could do the entire print run from home and the scans no longer look like, well scans. But instead of printing it out we can print it as a PDF which can be read with several different e-readers or with your computer using a PDF reader. (It’s more fun with an e-reader as the pages will act more like a zines page.) After I finish writing this page I will be going to Facebook to plead with people to send something to be in this issue.

    A SOCIO-ECONOMIC STUDY OF THE CAMORRA THROUGH JOURNALISM, RELIGION AND FILM by ROBERT SHELTON BELLEW (under the direction of Thomas E. Peterson) ABSTRACT This dissertation is a socio-economic study of the Camorra as portrayed through Roberto Saviano‘s book Gomorra: Viaggio nell'impero economico e nel sogno di dominio della Camorra and Matteo Garrone‘s film, Gomorra. It is difficult to classify Saviano‘s book. Some scholars have labeled Gomorra a ―docufiction‖, suggesting that Saviano took poetic freedoms with his first-person triune accounts. He employs a prose and news reporting style to narrate the story of the Camorra exposing its territory and business connections. The crime organization is studied through Italian journalism, globalized economics, eschatology and neorealistic film. In addition to igniting a cultural debate, Saviano‘s book has fomented a scholarly consideration on the innovativeness of his narrative style. Wu Ming 1 and Alessandro Dal Lago epitomize the two opposing literary camps. Saviano was not yet a licensed reporter when he wrote the book. Unlike the tradition of news reporting in the United States, Italy does not have an established school for professional journalism instruction. In fact, the majority of Italy‘s leading journalists are writers or politicians by trade who have gravitated into the realm of news reporting. There is a heavy literary influence in Italian journalism that would be viewed as too biased for Anglo- American journalists. Yet, this style of writing has produced excellent material for a rich literary production that can be called engagé or political literature. A study of Gomorra will provide information about the impact of the book on current Italian journalism.
