CHAPTER 6 / The Tragedy of the Hipp olytus: The Waters of Ocean and the Untouched Meadow IN MEMORIAM ARTHUR DARBY NOCK (1902-1963) The clash of human will and divine power is basic to the tragic sense of Greek drama. Not only may the gods serve to set the tragic action into motion, but they may themselves embody its meaning. As this meaning usually involves some of the most complex and difficultissues of human life, so the nature of the gods and their mode of acting upon the human world are, often puzzling, fu ll of real or apparent contradictions or hard, painful truths. The Hippolytus has its full share of these difficulties.1 The human motivation in the play is totally comprehensible and satisfying in itself;2 yet the gods, Aphrodite in the prologue, Artemis in the epi- l. The text used is that of Gilbert Murray (1902; Oxford 195 I). Fragments are cited after Nauck. 1 2 3 4 Richard Hunter 5 6 7 The Garland of Hippolytus 8 Abstract: This article discusses a set of remarkable scholia on the dedicatory ad- 9 dress and prayer which Hippolytus offers to Artemis as he places a garland at her 10 statue (Euripides, Hippolytus 73–87); the scholia consider a variety of allegorical 11 interpretations for the garland and for Hippolytus’ moral elitism. The article sets 12 these scholia within the context of the poetic interpretation of later criticism 13 and traces their roots in the language of classical poetry itself. Abstract The Euripidean tragedies Hippolytus., The Bacchae and The Medea present us with female characters who have sacred and profcrund interactionrs with the gods. These women havr: powerful ritualistic abilities that move the tragic a,ction. Sirrrilarly, Euripides' versions of Hecuba ancl Electra present us v,rith dynamio female characters who derive their agency from tlhe religio-judiroial need for cosmic ;,rtonement. .tt is up to these heroines to uphold the sacred laws decreed by the gods. Why does l:uripides errLpower these fernales with such direct means of divination? Arguably, Euripides felt it necessary to use these,deistic feminine connections to destroy the titular male characters. The tragedian's implicaticn is clear: divine feminine power supersedes patriarchal power. This divine power is inherent in all women and it compels them act on behalf of cosmic necessity'. The importance of Medea's, Phaedra's and Agave's respective spiritual connections shows us the crucial role that women ptayed in ancient religious worship. -

They may be useful for anybody interested in Thales. They are not an essay, though they may lead to one. I focus mainly on the ancient sources that we have, and on the mathematics of Thales. I began this work in preparation to give one of several - minute talks at the Thales Meeting (Thales Buluşması) at the ruins of Miletus, now Milet, September , . The talks were in Turkish; the audience were from the general popu- lation. I chose for my title “Thales as the originator of the concept of proof” (Kanıt kavramının öncüsü olarak Thales). An English draft is in an appendix. The Thales Meeting was arranged by the Tourism Research Society (Turizm Araştırmaları Derneği, TURAD) and the office of the mayor of Didim. Part of Aydın province, the district of Didim encompasses the ancient cities of Priene and Miletus, along with the temple of Didyma. The temple was linked to Miletus, and Herodotus refers to it under the name of the family of priests, the Branchidae. I first visited Priene, Didyma, and Miletus in , when teaching at the Nesin Mathematics Village in Şirince, Selçuk, İzmir. The district of Selçuk contains also the ruins of Eph- esus, home town of Heraclitus. In , I drafted my Miletus talk in the Math Village. Since then, I have edited and added to these notes. -

ABSTRACT A Director’s Approach to Euripides’ Hecuba Christopher F. Peck, M.F.A. Mentor: DeAnna Toten Beard, Ph.D. This thesis explores a production of Euripides’ Hecuba as it was directed by Christopher Peck. Chapter One articulates a unique Euripidean dramatic structure to demonstrate the contemporary viability of Euripides’ play. Chapter Two utilizes this dramatic structure as the basis for an aggressive analysis of themes inherent in the production. Chapter Three is devoted to the conceptualization of this particular production and the relationship between the director and the designers in pursuit of this concept. Chapter Four catalogs the rehearsal process and how the director and actors worked together to realize the dramatic needs of the production. Finally Chapter Five is a postmortem of the production emphasizing the strengths and weaknesses of the final product of Baylor University’s Hecuba. Edmonds III Bryn Mawr University The most striking aspect of the tiny gold tablets often known as the Orphic gold leaves is undoubtedly the enigmatic declaration: ʺI am the child of Earth and starry Heavenʺ. All of the tablets which, following Zuntzʹs classification, have been labelled B tablets, contain this mysterious formula, whether the scenario of the deceasedʹs journey through the underworld is described in greater or lesser detail1. The statement captures the imagination with its imagery and its simplicity, but also with its mysterious nature. -

PARRHESIA NUMBER 13 • 2011 • 14-27 THE ROLE OF FORGETTING IN OUR EXPERIENCE OF TIME: AUGUSTINE OF HIPPO AND HANNAH ARENDT Antonio Calcagno Hannah Arendt’s work is deeply marked by a rich analysis of temporality. One finds references to it from her earliest works on Augustine of Hippo1 to her last major work, The Life of the Mind. Scholars have rightly explored the significance of temporality and its constitutive centrality for Arendt’s thought.2 Her views of temporality can be divided grosso modo along three axes. First, there is time-lived or the times-experienced, which comprise or touch upon such aspects as history, biography, narrative, and a timely engagement with the issues of the day, which include, for example, various moments in American Cold-War culture and civil-rights movements.3 Second, there is a sense of time understood as spontaneity, as natality, in which a new beginning is made possible today, hodiernus. Arising spontaneously, this time marks a new promise, as in the case of forgiveness.4 Perhaps we can call this the time of the kairos, the opportune time, the now-time that emerges from a set of circumstances but is not merely a result of a series of causal events. Finally, one finds in Arendt’s work a philosophical position on the very nature of time itself, understood as the past and the future that make possible the present, that condition the very existence of the human being. Particularly striking is the account of time that Arendt gives in the concluding parts of her work on “Thinking” in The Life of the Mind. -

This sentence contains the seed idea of the series of articles, Theosophic Study, by Roy Mitchell which have been collected in this booklet. It is a book of practical guidance for working students and will be of special interest to those students of Theosophy who have passed through the stage of the first enthusiasm which results from early contact with Theosophical ideas, and are now desirous of selecting their own way across the many fascinating fields of investigation which open up before the serious student. There does come a time when desultory reading, dipping into this and that aspect of the Ancient Wisdom, no longer satisfies. The student undergoes a change in mental polarity. He no longer wishes to read in order to absorb the ideas and thoughts of other persons; he desires to pursue a particular line of study for himself, to collect data, to work over the information he gathers, and to formulate his own ideas. This, of course, is as it should be; each student is required to make his own way 'by self-induced and self-devised efforts'. Mr. Mitchell, from his wide experience as a working student, offers many practical suggestions for systematizing one's efforts and projecting the work in such a manner that ideas are consolidated and that from each consolidation, new avenues of enquiry are opened.
