Government is cognizant of the SMMTA’s endeavors to help promote St. Maarten as the leading yachting destination. St. Maarten has been at the forefront of developing world class facilities and services in the Caribbean geared to the growing demand of the marine industry. Causeway :LW AREA GUIDE There are many reefs around this and most other islands in the Caribbean. It is strongly recommended that yachtsmen consult proper charts at all times when navigating local waters as entrances to anchorages and marinas can be extremely deceptive. Check in the classified section of this directory for local chart suppli- ers. Excellent cruising guides to the waters of this and nearby islands have been CAUSEWAY published by the likes of Chris Doyle, Cruising Guide Publications and Donald Street. These guides are very informative but should be used in conjunction with a BRIDGE local chart.

MARINE EMERGENCY NUMBERS In the event of an emergency while at sea, yachtsmen that are in the vicinity of St. Maarten should use the emergency Ch.16. If your VHF is not working and you have a cellular tele- phone, you may call the St. Maarten Sea Rescue Service by dialing 199 or the Police by dial- ing 911. On the French side, the SNSM (National Society for Rescue at Sea) has two rescue boats. The SNSM can be reached by telephone at 06 90 76 75 00.

SEA RESCUE SERVICES The St. Maarten Sea Rescue Foun- dation (SSRF), established in 1982 assists mariners in distress with the help from their volunteers. The SSRF, members of both the International Maritime Rescue Organization and the Caribbean Search and Rescue Foundation operates two vessels in its rescue operations. Rescue 01 is an inflatable 30ft rigid mark Lacom- ble, equipped with 2 x 200 hp engines and with a search range of 80 miles. The Rescue 02 is a former Police/Coast Guard ship measures 58ft with a speed of 22 knots and a search range of 300 miles. This vessel is also used in emergency.

Established on November 25th 1982, the St. Maarten Sea Rescue Foundation (SRF) has saved many people from life-threatening situations. This has been made possible not only through the hard work of our voluntary organization but also as a direct result of the generosity of various organizations and individuals who have provided us with the funds necessary to carry out our valuable task.

Today, the SRF comprises 14 active members who are operating our two rescue vessels under just about any sea and weather conditions. The SRF also has many members from the island who have contributed to the organization over the last 25 years.

INSPECTIONS The St Maarten Sea Rescue Foundation is now also responsible for the inspections of private and small commercial vessels for the St Maarten ship registry. This means that inspections of private ves- sels and commercial vessels with a maximum of 12 passengers need to be inspected by SSRF before registration/re-registration can occur.

A little snack bar cooks up hamburgers and hotdogs and serves cold beers and soft drinks. Make sure you take a little waterproof bag with you. Le Galion is also a popular hangout for surfing, kite-boarding, and windsurfing enthusiasts. In front of the former “Le Galion Hotel” surfing is perhaps best because of the trade winds coming along the Atlantic coast.

MTD2017 valx.indd 36 10/30/16 3:43 PM Happy Bay With its paradise setting, this is the quintes- sential tropical beach. Accessible only by a 10-minute hike through the hills, Happy Bay is one of the island’s most beautiful beaches and has managed to preserve its authentic and untouched charm. Lined with coconut trees, Happy Bay’s white sands are ideal for picnicking.

Friar’s Bay Beach Since this beautiful bay is well protected from the wind and heavy surf, it is ideal for the whole family. There are three beach bar res- taurants on Friar´s Bay, and they all organize theme nights, Barbecues, and private parties. Their “Full Moon Parties” are legendary and are not to be missed! Case Beach is perfect for sunning or stroll- ing. The northern edge fringes Creole Rock, the island’s premier snorkeling spot.

Pinel Island This small paradise island lies just off the east coast of Saint Martin, at the heart of the Nature Reserve. Legend has it that in his attempt to capture the island of Saba, the buccaneer Pinel was driven back by the island’s inhabitants who hurled great rocks down on the pirates from their mountain refuge. As they fled, the invaders ran aground on Pinel Island, which has since borne the name of the defeated captain.

Two breathtaking beaches await visitors here: the first, facing Saint Martin, is a very sheltered sandy strip with shallow waters. Ideal for children, the beach here is postcard perfect, with clear waters and white sand.

There are two beachside restaurants here and the area is a superb shallow-water dive spot. The second beach, which is stony and exposed to the forces of nature, is a 10-minute walk away on the other side of the island. To get to Pinel Island, take a traditional boat known as a Saintoise from the pontoon at Cul-de-Sac. The 10-minute boat ride costs around $6. .37 SMMTA

HEINEKEN REGATTA

The St. Maarten Heineken Regatta will celebrate its 37th edition this year from March 2 - 5, 2017. This world renowned sailing event offers four days of World Class Racing, with trade winds coming from the North East, an average temperature of 25°C and crystal clear waters. In 2016 a staggering 37 different countries repre- sented during the Regatta. Courses will take participants along coastal races, as well as around the island, presenting the beautiful beaches, rock formations and other scenery. On shore participants and visitors will be able to enjoy the culture, cuisine and music from both the Dutch and French side.

Anyone can participate in the St. Maarten Heineken Regatta and the level of racing has reached great heights and has met the levels of international racing standards in both monohull, as well as multihull racing. The competitive cruising class is also well represented, with participants who enjoy a more leisurely race. Furthermore, approximately 70 participating boats are chartered by individuals or companies and sail in our bareboat division.

Part of the Regatta since the inception, main sponsor Heineken also makes the on shore events something exciting that everyone eagerly awaits and joyously participates in. With party locations on both Frenh and Dutch side, it is a great opportunity to see the fantastic nightlife the island has to offer and put a lot of emphasis on the local talented singers and bands. The St. Maarten Heineken Regatta has a history in providing great artists and an atmosphere to die for every night of the regatta. The closing party is the high- light of the event, with artists such as Wyclef Jean, Shaggy, The Commodores and The Black Eyed Peas closing off the event in

For seaside vacation experiences, the beach options are seemingly end- less: Rendezvous Bay, Cove Bay and Mead’s Bay beckon with long curved strands of sand. Smaller pocket beaches include Limestone Bay, known for its snorkeling, and Little Bay, reached only by boat. Captain’s Bay and Junk’s Hole Bay are more remote. Shoal Bay East is undoubtedly the island’s most popular beach while Scrub Island, Prickly Pear and Dog Island are excellent snorkeling destinations.

The water, filled with Crayola-colored tropical fish, is often so transparent it’s like floating in air. The resorts range from clean, simple and on the sand to some of the world’s best. As for the restaurants, you’d have to be a shark to get fresher seafood. And the beaches? Merely the finest collection you’ll find on any single island in the Caribbean.

SABA Saba is ideal for the traveler looking for a secluded haven, in peaceful and friendly surroundings. Rising steeply from the azure sea, the tiny island in the Caribbean is a magical experience far away from the cares and worries of today’s hurried world.

Four small villages are as quaint and charming as the gentle, friendly manner of the Saban people, descended from hardy 17th century pioneers. Visitors feel they have stepped back in history, yet many modern luxuries are here to be enjoyed. Saba is a monument to nature’s best above and below the ocean’s surface. The famous Saba Marine Park is second to none. Saba is a magical place for scuba diving, hiking, admiring the nature or honeymooning!

ST BARTHS This arid, volcanic rock of just eight square miles is home to an eclectic mix of iguanas, night-blooming cactus, and fabulous beaches as well as luxury yachts, designer boutiques, and celebrities. Peopled primarily by descen- dents of the original French settlers and transplanted Europeans, this is an island with a strong, independent personality. Through the vagaries of its history it became a duty-free port and more recently liberated itself from the administrative yoke of . It is certainly the most unusual of the French West Indies islands.

The island of Saint Barth is the host of many cultural and sports activities as well as local fetes. Featured are nautical events such as the St Barth Bucket, The Cata-Cup, Les Voiles de Saint Barth and the St Barth theatre, music, and film festivals.

If you think little St. Maarten is only good for peaceful retreats, think again. Don’t let the size of the island fool you. St. Maarteners are notorious for partying hard. Some of the most famous clubs on the island have been compared to clubs in Vegas and Miami with international DJs and well known celebrities making regular appear- ances.

If you’re looking for something more low-key head to one of the many bars with great happy hour prices or step into one of the stylish piano bars for an evening of fun and great entertainment.

The boardwalk in Philipsburg has become a hot spot with live music on Fridays. Sip on a Pina Colada while watching the sun set in the ocean at one of the restaurants along this popular beach boule- vard. Open air night clubs and trendy lounge bars in a VIP setting can also be found here on the Friendly Island. Or go Plane Spotting at the Sunset Beach Bar.

Although a few bars and restaurants begin to wind down between 11:00pm and midnight, many of the clubs are just getting going while the adult entertainment clubs guarantee a party until the sun comes up. Crews can unwind at the different crew bars. The infamous Soggy Dollar Bar borders on crazy with its wild and live en- tertainment—voted number one crew bar in the World, by Dockwalk Magazine.

Casinos offer a different sort of entertainment. There are over 10 casinos to choose from on the Dutch side alone. But whatever your choice, St. Maarten has it: Fun, Glamour and Magic! .66 SMMTA
