Nathaniel was also the second great-grandfather of Thomas Hancock, third cousin of President John Thomas had two brothers killed in the War of Independence. He then tried to enlist as a youth, but the officers thought three sons taken from one family was too much. A LOVER OF FREEDOM: Thomas Hancock had a son, Levi Ward Hancock. He was one of the Presidents of the First Council of Seventy, and a faithful Utah pioneer. He, too, was lover of freedom, and also suffered at the hands of the enemies. In the face of violence in Missouri, he wrote a patriotic song one Fourth of July, which his brother, Solomon Hancock, sang at the celebration. In it, there were appealing lines. Then God armed our fathers with power, They told the brave tale to their children, And Washington came to our aid, And told them the same to hand down And in wisdom conducted the battle To their children’s children forever, And soon made the Tories afraid. Until the great trumpet shall sound. Hark, hear how the great battle rages, Exalt then the standard of freedom, Behold him undauntedly stand. -

Thoroughfare 5.qxp 11/20/2006 11:17 AM Page 78 Thoroughfare 6.qxp 11/20/2006 11:17 AM Page 79 Chapter 6 The Saints Flee from Ohio to Missouri 1838 he year 1837 was a time of tragedy for the Church in Kirtland. “The spirit of speculation in lands and property of all kinds, which was so prevalent throughout the whole nation, was taking deep root in the Church,” wrote Joseph Smith. “As the fruits of this spirit, evil surmisings, fault-finding, disunion, dissension, and apostasy followed in quick succession, andT it seemed as though all the powers of earth and hell were combining their influence in an especial manner to overthrow the Church at once, and make a final end.”1 One sorrowful result of this disunity was that many members left the Church at this time. Some of them even joined forces with Mormon haters to harass the faithful Saints. The apostates were so mean-spirited that they forced the steadfast members of the Church in Ohio to flee to Missouri in order to escape persecution. This chapter will discuss the events that led to this apostasy. It will also give an account of the members’ mass exodus to Missouri, with special emphasis on their travels along the Mormon thoroughfare of Illinois. The Road to Apostasy The historic background to the “Great Apostasy” in Ohio began soon after the Saints completed construction of the Kirtland Temple in the spring of 1836. 1 DOCTRINE & COVENANTS 131-132 CHRONOLOGY September 28, 1843 – Emma Smith temporarily accepts polygamy. The temple quorum receives Emma as the first woman of the quorum and the highest ordinances of the gospel are for the first time delivered to JS and Emma together. JS voted President of the temple quorum. October 8, 1843 – JS moves to remove Sidney Rigdon from the FP, however the General Conference, refuses to allow it. November 29, 1843 – JS preaches against State's rights. December 23, 1843 – Emma Smith's last meeting with the Temple quorum. January 7, 1844 – Temple Quorum votes to expel William Law, second counselor in the FP. January 29, 1844 – Quorum of the Twelve nominate JS as an independent candidate for the US Presidency. February 21, 1844 – JS instructs the Q12 to select men to explore the West outside of the US for potential new headquarters. February 25, 1844 – Temple quorum approves distribution of JS's Presidential Platform (including provision to free the slaves). March 11, 1844 – Council of Fifty organized. REVIEWS Matthew McBride. A House for the Most High: The Story of the Original Nauvoo Temple. Salt Lake City: Greg Kofford Books, 2007, 448 pp. $34.95. Reviewed by William Shepard, who is of Strangite heritage and is president-elect of the John Whitmer Historical Association board It is a pleasure to review this excellent book which will be a standard work on the Nauvoo Temple among the Mountain Saints for many years to come. McBride, the manager of online development at Deseret Book Company and an avid researcher, has written an easy-to-read and well-doc- umented history of the Mormon temple at Nauvoo. In the opening chapter, McBride cites Joseph Smith’s public an- nouncement on July 19, 1840: “Now brethren I obligate myself to build as great a temple as ever Solomon did, if the church will back me up” (2). McBride cites portions of LDS Doctrine and Covenants 124 concerning the temple, emphasizing verses 31, 33, and 37, which state that the temple had to be built “within a sufficient time” or the church would be rejected (35–36). In Chapter 2, “Laying the Foundation: February 1841 to October 1841,” McBride discusses the initial work on the temple foundation and cornerstones and the purchase of lumber mills in Wisconsin, providing the reader with a solid understanding of this early period and explaining why the hierarchy pleaded for members to gather to Nauvoo. Chapter 3, covering November 1841 to April 1842, includes ac- counts of the dedication of the temple font and the first baptisms for the dead, also supplying an interesting essay about the temple stonecutters. -

Ecclesiastical Officers and Church Appointees Th e following charts show the general leadership of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as well as local ecclesiastical offi cers in Nauvoo, Illinois, between 1839 and April 1843. Th e charts also identify the temple recorder and members of the Nauvoo temple committee and Nauvoo House Association. Readers wishing to conduct further research may consult the documented organizational charts posted on the Joseph Smith Papers website. FIRST PRESIDENCY, QUORUM OF THE TWELVE, AND PATRIARCH Th e following chart shows the members of the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, as well as the church patriarch, with their dates of service. By 1839 the titles and offi ces of the First Presidency, which had varied in earlier years, were relatively stable, consisting of a president and two counselors; fl exibility in its organization is evident, however, in positions held by Hyrum Smith, Amasa Lyman, and John C. Bennett. Th e responsibilities of the members of the Quorum of the Twelve, whose duties had been prose- lytizing and overseeing scattered branches of the church, expanded in Nauvoo as they took on signifi cant administrative tasks. After the deaths of JS and Hyrum Smith on 27 June 1844, the First Presidency dissolved and the Quorum of the Twelve presided over the church until Brigham Young was sustained as church president in December 1847. William G. Hartley The Seventies in the 1880s: Revelations and Reorganizing These 76 quorums were all torn to pieces." That disturbing report card for seventies quorums came from Joseph Young, senior president of all seventies in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, in January 1880.1 Such a dis- rupted state could not long continue, and two "thus saith the lord" revelations to Church President John Taylor —on 13 October 1882 and 14 April 1883 — triggered major reconstructions of the work and the quorums of the seventies.- What circumstances prompted the revelations and what responses did they receive? Why was the then-current seventies quorum system malfunctioning? What did the revelations teach and mean in their 1880s context? How fully were the revelations' instructions implemented? How did the First Council of the Sev- enty interrelate with the First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles regarding seventies' work? Why was the vacant First Quorum of Seventy not recreated? What differences did the revelations and restructurings make to sev- enties' work? What does this episode teach us about the role continuous revela- tion plays in priesthood history? What seventies problems were left unresolved? This study draws heavily on seventies' records — those of the First Council and of individual quorums — and is thus biased towards those sources. The diaries of apostles Franklin D. Richards and Brigham Young, Jr., helped com- pensate for the First Presidency and Council of the Twelve minutes, unavail- able for the 1880s. THE SEVENTIES' BEGINNINGS On 28 February 1835, Joseph Smith announced an unrecorded revelation about the seventies, established a new Melchizedek Priesthood office, and cre- ated a distinctively structured quorum of seventy men.
