  • Do Mormon “Scriptures” Pass the Tests for Divine Inspiration?1
Do Mormon “Scriptures” Pass the Tests for Divine Inspiration?1 Let us examine the Mormon “scriptures” to determine if they past the tests of divine inspiration. In order to qualify as inspired, a text must pass all the tests for inspiration: 1. Be spoken from, and in the name of, the Lord (Jeremiah 30:2, 1 Peter 1:21). 2. Exalt and glorify God (John 5:39 &; 17:4-10; Ephesians 1:13-14). 3. Directs the love of men toward God (Colossians 3:16; Revelation 19:10). 4. Draw men to repent of their rebellion against God and to submit fully to Him (Psalms 19:17; 2 Timothy 3:16). 5. Prophecies come to fulfillment with 100 percent accuracy (Deuteronomy 18:20-222). 6. Support the laws, precepts, and principles set forth in the rest of Scripture-without contradiction (Isaiah 8:20; Matthew 5:17; John 10:353). 7. Communicate only truth, in all disciplines of knowledge (Psalms 119:160; Hebrews 6:18 4). Upon examination, one finds all the Mormon “scriptures” fail one or more of the last three tests. 5. Prophecies come to fulfillment with 100 percent accuracy. The Bible warns us regarding false prophecy: “Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world” (1 John 4:1). In addition, we are told to “examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good;” (1 Thessalonians 5:21). Contrary to Mormon teachings, which encourage prayer to receive a “burning in the bosom,” the Bible tells us to test truthfulness of prophecy by seeing if the prophecy comes to pass.

Woods: Cemetery Record of William D. Huntington 131 The Cemetery Record of William D. Huntington, Nauvoo Sexton Fred E. Woods When John Butler first visited Commerce (later known as Nauvoo) he recalled, “I asked Brother Joseph what kind of a place it was. He said it was a low, marshy, wet, damp and nasty place, but that if we went to work and improved it, it would become more healthy and the Lord would bless it for our sakes.”1 The Prophet Joseph Smith also stated, “The name of our city (Nauvoo) is of Hebrew origin, and signifies a beautiful situation, or place, carrying with it, also, the idea of rest; and is truly descriptive of the most delightful situation. This place has been objected to by some, on account of the sickness which has prevailed in the summer months.” Yet Joseph expressed his hope that such sickness could be “remedied by draining the sloughs on the adjacent islands in the Mississippi.”2 The Saints did drain the swampy terrain of Nauvoo, but the call of death continued.

  • Heavenly Mother Handout
Heavenly Mother Handout By Missy McConkie “I am a daughter of Heavenly Parents, who love me and I love them.” Myth #1: Church leaders do not speak of Her, so we should not. Reality: This is cultural, not doctrinal. Myth #2: She exists, but we know nothing else about her Reality: Leaders of our church have spoken about her roles since the days of Joseph Smith. Myth #3: Our silence protects her against being blasphemed and slandered as the Father and Son are. Reality: evidence from David Paulsen’s article makes it clear: there is no authorized mandate of silence from church leaders. Family Proclamation: “Each is a beloved spirit son or daughter of heavenly parents” In 1909, the First Presidency of the Church wrote: “All men and women are in the similitude of the universal Father and Mother and are literally the sons and daughters of Deity.” Paulsen, 73. From “The Origin and Destiny of Man,” Improvement Era 12 (Nov. 1909):78. President Gordon B. Hinckley said, “Logic and reason would certainly suggest that if we have a Father in Heaven, we have a Mother in Heaven. That doctrine rests well with me.” Paulsen, 73 (Gordon B. Hinckley, “Daughters of God” Ensign, 31 (Nov. 1991) “The Church is bold enough to go so far as to declare that man has an Eternal Mother in the Heavens as well as an Eternal Father.” James E. • Historical Overview
1 Historical Overview Early History of the Papyri In the early part of the nineteenth century, Antonio Lebolo, an antiquities dealer working under the consul general of Egypt, plundered several tombs in Thebes in southern Egypt. Some of the antiquities he sold; others he kept. Among those he kept were eleven mummies that he brought home to Italy. After Lebolo’s death, his family sent the mummies through the shipping company of Albano Oblasser to sell in America to the high- est bidder. The highest bidder was Michael Chandler, who, having failed to find valuables inside the mummies other than some papyri, took them around as part of a traveling curios- ity show. After two years on the road, Chandler’s mummy show reached Kirtland, Ohio, then Owners of the Papyri Antonio Lebolo Albano Oblasser Michael Chandler Joseph Simeon Joseph Coe Smith Jr. Andrews Lucy Mack Smith Lewis Emma Smith Joseph Bidamon Bidamon Smith III Abel Combs St. Louis Charlotte Weaver Museum Huntsman Wood Edward Alice Combs Museum Heusser Weaver Heusser Chicago Fire Metropolitan Museum of Art The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Historical Overview 3 the headquarters of the fledgling Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.1 Joseph Smith, prophet of the church, examined the several papyrus rolls and, after commencing “the translation of some of the characters or hieroglyphics,” said that “one of the rolls contained the writings of Abraham, another the writings of Joseph of Egypt, etc.”2 In early July of 1835, Joseph Coe, Simeon Andrews, Joseph Smith, and others paid Chandler $2400 for four mummies and at least five papyrus documents, including two or more rolls3 (see charts on pages 10–13).
