acknowledgments for his patient gentle and kind directdirectionon I1 express appreciation to H donidonl Peterpetersonsont my committee chairman j I1 am also especially indebted to ellis theo rasmussen for his cooperation and assistance in explaining various parts of his initial venture of study of the first sixty four sections of the doctrine and covenants and for his permission to borrow particular sections of the general format of his data presentation and analysis and his list of code designation symbols to my family though many miles away during the completion of this study and to my roommate and friend M alberta jacobs I1 am deeply grateful for their expres- sions of encouragement and support iii TABLE OF CONTENTS page acknowledgments 9 0 0 0 0 0 0 9 0 9 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 iii rasmussenirasmussenRasmussenisens currently chairman of the department of ancient scripture at brigham young university wrote his Mastmashersmastersertserss thesis on the textual parallels to the doctrine and covenants and book of comman- dments as found in the biblebibie ll11 because of the voluminous material already compiled when he arrived at the conclusion of the book of commandments section 64 in the doctrine and Covenantcovenantscovenantspsp dredrodr rasmussen terminated his study this thesis is a continuation of his research of the textual parallels to the remainder of the doctrine and covenants sections 6513365 133 as found in the old and new testaments sections 134 to 136 were excluded as section 133 is the last revelation to joseph smith listed in the doctrine and covenants THE PROBLEM the problem entails finding the textual relationship between the doctrine and covenants of the church of jesus christ of latter day saints and the king james version of the bible dr rasmussen found in his study that there are certain phrases and clauses in the doctrine and covenants 1 2 similar in wording vocabulary and syntax and in meaning denotations connotations to some of the clauses and phrases in the bible sufficient to enable a selection of samples to be made from both scriptures that parallel each other areas to be studied relating to the problem answers to the following phases of the stated problems will be sought 1 how many textual parallels are there per verse in each section of the doctrine and covenants 2 how often are any particular phrases or clauses reusedre used 3 how closely do phrases or certain groupings of words in the two books of scripture parallel each other as to similarity in a wording and meaning b wording while differing in meaning c meaning while differing in wording d wording only e context only 4 what is the proportion of each kind of parallel as found in each section of the doctrine and covenants 5 in which books of the bible are the parallels found and what is the total number of parallels found in each book 6 how do the textual parallels in the doctrine and covenants help to a reiterate prophecies b elaborate upon and expand biblical prophecies c set forth new ideas using expressions and phrases similar to biblical phrases of different context 7 does a particular type of subject matter induce a greater ratio of parallels 3 defdefinitioninitionanition of terms textual parallel is defined as a phrase or clause in the doctrine and covenants sections 6513365 133 similar in construction and meaning or construction or meaning only to a phrase or clause in the bible with permission of dr rasmussen his code to desig- nate varying degrees of similarity of parallels shall be used in this thesis also christ of latter day saints this book of scripture is a compilation of revelations given to the prophet joseph smith sections 11331 133 from 1831 to 1843 plus three additional sections section 134 is a declaration of belief regarding government and law in general section 135 is an inspired account of the martyrdom of joseph smith and given through president brigham young section 136 is the word and will of the lord concerning the saints at the winter quarters council bluffs iowa limitationsdelimitationsDe of the problem this study seeks only the more obvious parallels in the doctrine and covenants and the bible because of the vast amount of material to be analyzed neither does it attempt 5 to explain why joseph smith used certain word groupings and phrases similar to those of ancient prophets Howehoweverversverp dr rasmussen has already suggested other studies that could be made of language and textual parallels in the doctrine and covenants as found in the book of
