Thoroughfare 5.qxp 11/20/2006 11:17 AM Page 78 Thoroughfare 6.qxp 11/20/2006 11:17 AM Page 79 Chapter 6 The Saints Flee from Ohio to Missouri 1838 he year 1837 was a time of tragedy for the Church in Kirtland. “The spirit of speculation in lands and property of all kinds, which was so prevalent throughout the whole nation, was taking deep root in the Church,” wrote Joseph Smith. “As the fruits of this spirit, evil surmisings, fault-finding, disunion, dissension, and apostasy followed in quick succession, andT it seemed as though all the powers of earth and hell were combining their influence in an especial manner to overthrow the Church at once, and make a final end.”1 One sorrowful result of this disunity was that many members left the Church at this time. Some of them even joined forces with Mormon haters to harass the faithful Saints. The apostates were so mean-spirited that they forced the steadfast members of the Church in Ohio to flee to Missouri in order to escape persecution. This chapter will discuss the events that led to this apostasy. It will also give an account of the members’ mass exodus to Missouri, with special emphasis on their travels along the Mormon thoroughfare of Illinois. The Road to Apostasy The historic background to the “Great Apostasy” in Ohio began soon after the Saints completed construction of the Kirtland Temple in the spring of 1836. 1 DOCTRINE & COVENANTS 131-132 CHRONOLOGY September 28, 1843 – Emma Smith temporarily accepts polygamy. The temple quorum receives Emma as the first woman of the quorum and the highest ordinances of the gospel are for the first time delivered to JS and Emma together. JS voted President of the temple quorum. October 8, 1843 – JS moves to remove Sidney Rigdon from the FP, however the General Conference, refuses to allow it. November 29, 1843 – JS preaches against State's rights. December 23, 1843 – Emma Smith's last meeting with the Temple quorum. January 7, 1844 – Temple Quorum votes to expel William Law, second counselor in the FP. January 29, 1844 – Quorum of the Twelve nominate JS as an independent candidate for the US Presidency. February 21, 1844 – JS instructs the Q12 to select men to explore the West outside of the US for potential new headquarters. February 25, 1844 – Temple quorum approves distribution of JS's Presidential Platform (including provision to free the slaves). March 11, 1844 – Council of Fifty organized. March 23, 1844 – JS delivers "Last Charge" to the Q12 at a meeting of the Council of Fifty. April 7, 1844 – JS delivers Famous King Follett Sermon at General Conference. April 8, 1844 – JS delivers sermon, shift in gathering. April 11, 1844 – JS anointed King, Priest and Ruler by the Council of Fifty. April 18, 1844 – William Law excommunicated. Ecclesiastical Officers and Church Appointees Th e following charts show the general leadership of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as well as local ecclesiastical offi cers in Nauvoo, Illinois, between 1839 and April 1843. Th e charts also identify the temple recorder and members of the Nauvoo temple committee and Nauvoo House Association. Readers wishing to conduct further research may consult the documented organizational charts posted on the Joseph Smith Papers website. FIRST PRESIDENCY, QUORUM OF THE TWELVE, AND PATRIARCH Th e following chart shows the members of the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, as well as the church patriarch, with their dates of service. By 1839 the titles and offi ces of the First Presidency, which had varied in earlier years, were relatively stable, consisting of a president and two counselors; fl exibility in its organization is evident, however, in positions held by Hyrum Smith, Amasa Lyman, and John C. Bennett. Th e responsibilities of the members of the Quorum of the Twelve, whose duties had been prose- lytizing and overseeing scattered branches of the church, expanded in Nauvoo as they took on signifi cant administrative tasks. After the deaths of JS and Hyrum Smith on 27 June 1844, the First Presidency dissolved and the Quorum of the Twelve presided over the church until Brigham Young was sustained as church president in December 1847. Most maps are not indexed; map coordinates for specific locations are given in the Geographical Directory. Spelling, punctuation, and capitalization of quotations have been standardized. Personal names are listed by their correct spellings, not by variant spellings that may be found in the journals, unless correct spelling is unknown. Entries for women are generally listed under their final married names, with appropriate cross-references under maiden names or earlier married names. Unidentified individuals, such as “Mr. Brown,” are included in the index. In subentry text, Joseph Smith (JS) and Emma Smith (ES) are referred to by their initials. McClellan and Maurine Carr Ward The Latter-day Saint movement grew quickly in Kirtland, brought about in no small part because of the fevered pace of its missionary efforts, first regionally and then abroad. This growth required the institution of many administrative functions and mechanisms most importantly to develop, dis- seminate, and control doctrine but also to create order and synergies in the frontier community, where government played only a fraction of the role apportioned to it today. It was during the Kirtland years that the fledgling Church first took aim at developing the range of policies and procedures necessary to govern a large group of people—both secular and spiritual. Although the more secu- lar interests gained prominence in Nauvoo and peaked in nineteenth-cen- tury Utah before phasing out during the twentieth century, the spiritual practices—or remnants thereof—developed in Kirtland proved foundational for the LDS faith and are still embedded in Church governance today. One administrative practice that became formalized during the Kirtland years concerned the regulation of Church doctrine through its emissaries— the establishment of a standard ordination and licensing system for autho- RICHARD D. Jessee The diary of Wilford Woodruff, fourth president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, is one of the significant documents of Mormon history. Covering the years from his acceptance of the faith in 1833 until his death in 1898, President Woodruff’s diary offers a keenly perceptive view of life in the early Church from the perspective of a leading official. Joining the Church during the Kirtland era, Woodruff’s rise to leadership was almost immediate. He was appointed to the seventies quo- rum in Kirtland in 1836 and two years later was called to the Council of Twelve Apostles—a calling that culminated with his appointment as Presi- dent of the Church in 1889. He also served as Church Historian for thirty- three years and was president of the Young Men’s Mutual Improvement Association. Among his civic assignments, Wilford Woodruff sat with the Nauvoo City Council, the Utah Territorial Legislature, and was president of the Utah Horticultural Society. Revealing a sensitive spirit and an intense feeling of destiny, Wood- ruff’s diary is a masterful chronicle. Explaining his motivation to keep a diary, Elder Woodruff wrote in 1857: “I have been inspired & moved upon to keep a Journal & write the affairs of this Church as far as I can... you may say that this is a great deal of trouble very well it has been . it has occupied nearly every liesure moment of my time.. -

Mormonism and the Radical Religious Movement in Early Colonial New England Val D. Rust INTRODUCTION MORMONS BELIEVE THAT forerunners prepared the way for the restoration of the Church of Jesus Christ in the latter days. This paper examines a special set of those forerunners, namely, the progenitors of the early converts to the LDS church, whose religious experiences took them through a refiner's fire so significant and revolutionary that it helped provide their descendants with the disposition to embrace a new, radical faith. Religious scholars often ask why a person converts from one religion to another. In Mormon circles, several theories are proffered to explain why people join the LDS church. Most theories assume that a person must be "touched by the Spirit" and that "my sheep hear my voice," but they also include social factors. A popular missionary theory is that converts come more often from personal referrals than from cold calls. Mormon re- searchers have attempted to demonstrate the validity of this theory by claiming it takes about 1,000 contacts through door-to-door tracting to find one convert, while a personal referral of a friend or relative results in con- version about half the time.1 Certain scholars have turned this common- sense insight into a formal theory of conversion. Rodney Stark, for exam- ple, claims converts to a religion such as the LDS church come mainly through a "huge, interlocking, kinship network" consisting of extended families, friendship circles, and neighborhoods.2 1.
