Thoroughfare 5.qxp 11/20/2006 11:17 AM Page 78 Thoroughfare 6.qxp 11/20/2006 11:17 AM Page 79 Chapter 6 The Saints Flee from Ohio to Missouri 1838 he year 1837 was a time of tragedy for the Church in Kirtland. “The spirit of speculation in lands and property of all kinds, which was so prevalent throughout the whole nation, was taking deep root in the Church,” wrote Joseph Smith. “As the fruits of this spirit, evil surmisings, fault-finding, disunion, dissension, and apostasy followed in quick succession, andT it seemed as though all the powers of earth and hell were combining their influence in an especial manner to overthrow the Church at once, and make a final end.”1 One sorrowful result of this disunity was that many members left the Church at this time. Some of them even joined forces with Mormon haters to harass the faithful Saints. The apostates were so mean-spirited that they forced the steadfast members of the Church in Ohio to flee to Missouri in order to escape persecution. This chapter will discuss the events that led to this apostasy. It will also give an account of the members’ mass exodus to Missouri, with special emphasis on their travels along the Mormon thoroughfare of Illinois. The Road to Apostasy The historic background to the “Great Apostasy” in Ohio began soon after the Saints completed construction of the Kirtland Temple in the spring of 1836. NAUVOO’S TEMPLE Dean E. Garner—Institute Director, Denton, Texas t was announced August 31, 1840, that a temple would be built, and Iarchitectural plans began to come in. Joseph Smith “advertised for plans for the temple,” William Weeks said, “and several architects presented their plans. But none seemed to suit Smith. When [William] presented his plans, Joseph Smith grabbed him, hugged him and said, ‘You are the man I want.’”1 Thus William was made superintendent of temple construction. All his work was cleared by the temple building committee. Those on the committee were Reynolds Cahoon, Elias Higbee, and Alpheus Cutler.2 Joseph Smith had the final say pertaining to the details of the temple, for he had seen the temple in vision, which enabled him to make decisions on the temple’s appearance.3 During the October Conference of 1840, the building of the Nauvoo During the temple was voted on and accepted by the saints. Manscill The Savior answers his own question when he says, “What manner of men ought ye to be? Even as I am.” In a similar way I say, “What manner of man ought we to be? Even as Richard Cowan.” My association with Richard and Dawn Cowan over these many years has demonstrated not only that they are followers of Christ in word and deed but that the Savior’s light emanates from their countenance. Indeed, Richard’s collective body of works—books, articles, teaching, and citizenship—leaves us with a lasting legacy to read and study for many years to come. It is with this sentiment that I write and dedicate this article to the Cowans’ love of temples. ver the years, the scholarly community has written exten- sively about the structure and construction of the Kirtland Temple in Ohio.1 Together, these formative works con- Ostitute our collective knowledge of the structure and construction of the Kirtland Temple. However, these authors, for the most part, have overlooked the involvement and contributions of Hyrum Smith. Smith, the older brother of the Prophet Joseph Smith, was assigned to supervise construction, raise funds, and promote unity and spiritual- ity among the Kirtland Saints in preparation for the solemn assembly to be held at the dedication of the temple. Consulting Smith’s personal diaries, letters, daybook, and account book adds important details to the collective history of the Kirtland Temple.2 Including the Smith 48 P An Eye of Faith papers in the temple narrative from conception to the dedication will provide new information and collaborate established facts about the structure and construction of this house. -

Prospectus William Weeks and the Ephemeral Temple at Nauvoo Central to the early Mormon concept of the City of Zion was the temple. Confronting violent opposition in Ohio and Missouri, in 1839 the Mormons fled to their new Zion at Nauvoo, Illinois situated along a horseshoe bend on the eastern bank of the Mississippi River. In 1840, work on a new temple commenced which would define and establish the permanency of Mormonism. The primitive theology and ritual surrounding the first Mormon temple in Ohio, developed and evolved for the more grandiose temple planned at Nauvoo. However, as Joseph Smith introduced new and controversial doctrines violent opposition increased from both inside and outside the Church. The temple rituals adapted with the expanding doctrine and necessitated an increasingly complex architectural program both on the temple’s interior and exterior. The larger Nauvoo Temple, while generally following the established prototype at Kirtland, assumed new functions and forms not anticipated during its initial planning and construction. The thesis will reexamine William Weeks’s involvement as architect in the design and construction of the Nauvoo temple, in collaboration with Joseph Smith. In particular, as architect, William Weeks materialized a definitive moment in Mormonism’s evolving cultural identity by reshaping ritual space, establishing Mormon material identity and introducing mystery and complexity in the ephemeral Nauvoo temple (1841-1846). The Nauvoo temple became the iconic symbol of Mormonism’s revolutionary doctrinal teachings during the Nauvoo period. Foundations of Faith at Adam-ondi-Ahman Elder Ken Wilcock – 11 October 2020 Grateful to be here with you, Grateful to be here as a Senior Missionary at this Sacred Location for the past 19 months and to be associated with the other Missionaries who have consecrated 20 months of their lives to serve the Lord here. Grateful for the acquaintances that we have made with so many of you gathered here this beautiful Sunday Afternoon. Previous to our call here, we met with a business acquaintance of mine who had served here as Director in 2016. He suggested that we should purchase the book “Sacred Places in Missouri” by Lamar Berrett. As a novice student of history, I had already bought one, but had no idea at the time that this book would launch me on to the path of adventure that it did. Soon after my wife and I arrived here in March of last year, I went out exploring and started finding these Orange 1” steel pipe post in various locations. Looking into the book, “Sacred Places in Missouri” it mentions these markers placed at certain locations and by that I was able to learn what these markers identified. The book mentioned that 15 of these posts had been placed and it soon became a quest of mine to find all 15. Brigham Young University sent Archeological Research Crews out here during the summers between 1979 and 1984 to excavate and locate as many as the foundations of buildings and structures that had been established by the Saints who lived in in 1838 as they could.
