The Book of Mormon Keystone of my life! ¾ Keystone of Our Religion We all know the Book of Mormon is the keystone of our religion. As the Prophet Joseph Smith stated on the introduction page, “…. I told the brethren that the Book of Mormon was the most correct of any book on the earth, and the keystone of our religion, and a man (or woman) would get nearer to God by abiding by its precepts, than by any other book.” In October Conference 1986, Elder Boyd K. Packer stated, “…true doctrine understood, changes attitudes and behavior. The study of the doctrines of the Gospel will improve behavior quicker than a study of behavior will improve behavior.” ¾ A Remarkable Difference As I have grown in the gospel and also watched my children grow in the gospel I have noticed a remarkable difference as we have studied the Book of Mormon. Any study of Christ and his life will bring you closer to the Lord, but there is a power in the Book of Mormon like no other book. In 1980, when we were young parents Marion G. Romney in his April conference address said, “....I believe that if, in our homes, parents will read from the Book of Mormon prayerfully and regularly, both by themselves and with their children, the spirit of that great book will come to permeate our homes and all who dwell therein. The spirit of reverence will increase; mutual respect and consideration for each other will grow. The spirit of contention will depart. Parents will counsel their children in greater love and wisdom. -

Presented at the John Whitmer Historical Association 41st Annual Meeting, September 27, 2013, Council Bluffs, Iowa. I appreciate being able to critique Joseph Smith’s Polygamy by Brian Hales. The three volumes comprise over thirteen hundred pages. There is a lot of repetition of quotations throughout the volumes. Since plural marriage is the topic of the volumes it would be appropriate to present a brief historical overview. In Latter-day Saint practice there was a gradual development in the custom of marriage. For the first ten years of its existence the church upheld the practice of one man being married to one wife. This position was published in the first edition of the Doctrine and Covenants printed in the state of Ohio. The article indicates that a marriage should be solemnized in public and states the position clearly: "we believe, that one man should have one wife; and one woman, but one husband."1 In the volumes there are repeated references concerning a girl named Fanny Alger, as a wife of Joseph Smith. One source used is by Mosiah Hancock, who was born in 1834. According to this story his father, Levi Hancock, was to perform a marriage ceremony between Joseph Smith and Fanny Alger.2 Oliver Cowdery, assistant church president, indicated there was a problem with Smith’s association with this girl. Smith, according to Cowdery, went back on his word3 and Cowdery withdrew from the church in 1838. -

Stapley 11 “Pouring in Oil”: The Development of the Modern Mormon Healing Ritual Though many believe that ritual behavior is rigid and unchanging, ritual behavior is highly innovative and sensitive to cultural changes and norms. Certainly that holds true in Latter-day Saint practice as our rituals often change both in form and meaning in response to new cultural views. Jonathan Stapley examines this aspect of ritual by review- ing the rich history of Latter-day Saint healing rituals. While worthwhile for its historical content, the chapter also demonstrates the value of ritual innovation and the power that may come from recognizing it in order to retain our cultural heritage and move forward in the modern era. —DB But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him, and went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. A HISTORY OF 'Beaver County Martha Sonntag Bradley UTAH CENTENNIAL COUNTY HISTORY SERIES A HISTORY OF 'Beaver County Martha Sonntag Bradley The settlement of Beaver County began in February 1856 when fifteen families from Parowan moved by wagon thirty miles north to Beaver Valley. The county was created by the Utah legislature on 31 January 1856, a week before the Parowan group set out to make their new home. However, centuries before, prehistoric peoples lived in the area, obtaining obsidian for arrow and spear points from the Mineral Mountains. Later, the area became home to Paiute Indians. Franciscan Friars Dominguez and Escalante passed through the area in October 1776. The Mormon settlement of Beaver devel oped at the foot of the Tushar Mountains. In 1859 the community of Minersville was es tablished, and residents farmed, raised live stock, and mined the lead deposits there. In the last quarter of the nineteenth century the Mineral Mountains and other locations in the county saw extensive mining develop ment, particularly in the towns of Frisco and Newhouse. Mining activities were given a boost with the completion of the Utah South ern Railroad to Milford in 1880. The birth place of both famous western outlaw Butch Cassidy and inventor of television Philo T. Farnsworth, Beaver County is rich in history, historic buildings, and mineral treasures. Faulring Filed away in the David Whitmer Collection at the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (RLDS) Archives is an inconspicuous, handwritten copy of a November 1849 letter from David Whitmer to Nathan A. West.1 In this carefully worded letter, Whitmer responded to West’s inquiry about a legal title to land once owned by the late Mormon elder King Follett.2 One senses from reading the letter that although David was trying to be helpful to his friend, he wanted to distance himself legally from liability in a decade-old property question. This letter is historically significant and interesting for a variety of rea- sons. First, there are few surviving letters from David Whitmer written dur- ing the first ten to fifteen years after he separated himself from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.3 Second, this retained copy, and most probably the dispatched original, was handwritten by Oliver Cowdery—just a little more than three months before he died. As such, it is the last-known handwriting of Mormonism’s Second Elder.4 Third, the letter’s cautious, legalistic wording is not from the mind of David Whitmer but was composed by Oliver Cowdery, the lawyer. As such, it is the only example of his legal writing from his fourteen-month stay in Richmond.5 Fourth, the items dis- cussed in the letter evidence the confused state of affairs existing in Far West, Missouri, at the time the Latter-day Saints were forced to flee the state in 1839.6 SCOTT H. -

NAUVOO’S TEMPLE Dean E. Garner—Institute Director, Denton, Texas t was announced August 31, 1840, that a temple would be built, and Iarchitectural plans began to come in. Joseph Smith “advertised for plans for the temple,” William Weeks said, “and several architects presented their plans. But none seemed to suit Smith. When [William] presented his plans, Joseph Smith grabbed him, hugged him and said, ‘You are the man I want.’”1 Thus William was made superintendent of temple construction. All his work was cleared by the temple building committee. Those on the committee were Reynolds Cahoon, Elias Higbee, and Alpheus Cutler.2 Joseph Smith had the final say pertaining to the details of the temple, for he had seen the temple in vision, which enabled him to make decisions on the temple’s appearance.3 During the October Conference of 1840, the building of the Nauvoo During the temple was voted on and accepted by the saints. The temple was to be October Conference constructed of stone. Many weeks preceding the conference, a survey of Nauvoo’s main street verified that the entire route was underlain with a of 1840, the building massive layer of limestone many feet thick, particularly so in the northern of the Nauvoo part of the community. That site was selected for the quarry, where quality white-gray Illinois limestone could be extracted for the construction of temple was voted the temple. Manscill The Savior answers his own question when he says, “What manner of men ought ye to be? Even as I am.” In a similar way I say, “What manner of man ought we to be? Even as Richard Cowan.” My association with Richard and Dawn Cowan over these many years has demonstrated not only that they are followers of Christ in word and deed but that the Savior’s light emanates from their countenance. Indeed, Richard’s collective body of works—books, articles, teaching, and citizenship—leaves us with a lasting legacy to read and study for many years to come. It is with this sentiment that I write and dedicate this article to the Cowans’ love of temples. ver the years, the scholarly community has written exten- sively about the structure and construction of the Kirtland Temple in Ohio.1 Together, these formative works con- Ostitute our collective knowledge of the structure and construction of the Kirtland Temple. However, these authors, for the most part, have overlooked the involvement and contributions of Hyrum Smith. Smith, the older brother of the Prophet Joseph Smith, was assigned to supervise construction, raise funds, and promote unity and spiritual- ity among the Kirtland Saints in preparation for the solemn assembly to be held at the dedication of the temple. Consulting Smith’s personal diaries, letters, daybook, and account book adds important details to the collective history of the Kirtland Temple.2 Including the Smith 48 P An Eye of Faith papers in the temple narrative from conception to the dedication will provide new information and collaborate established facts about the structure and construction of this house. -

Changes in the West : Mormons and the ecological geography of nationalism by Willard John McArthur A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in History Montana State University © Copyright by Willard John McArthur (1999) Abstract: Environmental historians have made fruitful endeavors in exploring the ways in which human communities modify the landscapes in which they live. However, nationalism is one area that has exhibited a tremendous influence on the course of modem history, yet has been little studied in its relationship to the environment. This thesis looks at the ways in which nationalism-a sense of connection to the larger nation— has influenced those modifications, and how those modifications have influenced and affected those making changes. This thesis looks to the early Mormon migrants to the West as a case study on how nationalism has influenced environmental change. Using an interdisciplinary approach, this argument relies on the work of intellectual historians of nationalism, environmental historians, geographers, and ecologists\biologists. Using these studies as a framework, this thesis posits a method for identifying nationalized landscapes: recognizing circumscribed landscapes, simplified environments, and lands that are connected spatial and temporally to the larger nation identifies a nationalized landscape. In particular, this thesis looks at fish, trees, and riparian zones as areas of change. Using the identifying markers of circumscription, simplification, and connection has uncovered that Mormons did indeed make changes in the landscape that were influenced by nationalism. These changes made to the land, influenced by nationalism, created a redesigned nature, that in turn influenced human relationships. -

Karl Keller, who has edited the fol- lowing manuscript lecture by Sidney Rigdon's son, is a frequent contributor to DIALOGUE and a member of the Board of Editors; he has recently taken a position as Assistant Professor of English at San Diego State College, has just published an article on Emerson in AMERICAN LITERATURE, and has a book on Emerson and an anthology of Mormon literature in preparation. Not very long after the death of Sidney Rigdon, the influential preacher and compatriate to Joseph Smith in the first years of the Church, his son, J o h n Wickliffe Rigdon, wrote an apology for his father. He delivered it at Alfred University and other colleges and communities in the Central New Y o r k area around the turn of t h e century, in an attempt to revive interest in his almost entirely for- gotten famous family and in an attempt to clear his father's name once and for all of criticisms connected with the founding of Mormonism.
