November 16, 2017 Allan Foremsky 221 Pierce Road Elizabeth, PA 15037-3002

Dear Manchester Terrier Club Members,

I would like to introduce myself and my wife. We are Allan and Sheryll Foremsky of Elizabeth, Pennsylvania. We are 74 and 70 years old and are retired school teachers. I taught industrial arts and English while my wife taught mathematics. We retired at the same time in 1998 after having taught 27 and 30 years respectively.

Our first Manny was literally someone’s throw away. We tried to find her owner, but no one came forth, so we named her Zippy and loved her for about 7 years. We don’t know how old she was when we got her, but we figure she was about 13 when she died of heart failure in January of 2013.

I was so broken up about her death. I found Polly Binek online and talked at great length to her about the Manny she had for sale. After meeting her and the dog, we got five-year-old Zippy II (We figured if George Foreman could name all his sons “George” then we could name all our “Zippy“). Although quite different from Zippy I, she was loved, well taken care of and thrived as an only dog instead of being part of the pack. 41/2 years after we got her she developed liver cancer and after trying many options, we reluctantly had her put down on June 24, 2017.

18 NEW MEMBER APPLICATIONS, CONT.

At my wife’s suggestion, we stayed dog less for about 2 months while we did a little traveling. It was hard for me because I have fallen hard for the breed. After checking with all the breeders within 400 miles of us listed on the AMTC WEBSITE, I found Tracey Vroman in Rock Hill SC online and developed a friendship with her, her daughter, Amanda, and her grandson Michael. Zip 11 was still with us at the time, but the VET told us that her time was short so just take her home and love her for the time she had left. We tried everything including a second opinion, special food and syringe feeding. They said we would know when it was time. They were right. She lasted 2 weeks. The pup was 12 weeks old at that time. Things changed in their family and they put her on the AKC website for sale. Tracy agreed to keep her while we took our trips, so we purchased her. We picked up 5-month-old Zippy III on August 27, 2017. This one is a puppy and she really lives up to her name.

We know nothing about puppies but got this one despite all the warnings from our friends who have had puppies. How hard could it be to outwit and out maneuver a 4-pound dog? Well she is 7 pounds now and we both wear band aids from the snake fang canines. If she doesn’t want caught with something other than her plethora of toys, we can’t catch her. She can go in reverse in a blink, and 2 feet to either side in the same amount of time.

We know that we need advice from all of you that are laughing right now! The club members who love the breed as we do may be our salvation. The reason for the puppy is that I don’t want to go thru the heartbreak again. The first two died in my arms. They were really good dogs and I would not have let them go without them being in my arms. I am a tough old MARINE with everything but my Wife and my Dogs. This one will outlive me if we can get her thru the puppy years without killing her! She is the epitome of a true terrier and she is getting the best of us at times. When she is good, she is wonderful but when she gets her TERRIER on she is tough to handle.

We will do all we can to help the club in your efforts to promote and enhance the breed. She just got my wallet and is destroying my credit cards. We don’t have to worry about credit card fraud, we need protection from terrier terror. Got to go so we hope you all enjoy our intro to life with a TOY MANCHESTER.

Please consider our application to your club favorably. Please let us know your decision.

Sincerely, Al and Sheryll

For consideration for membership in the AMTC:

After researching different breeds in 2002, I decided to purchase a Toy Manchester Terrier. I got my first bitch Velvet Firefly’s Moonshadow. She lived with me in upstate NY and endured many cold winters before I moved to South Florida; she is much happier in the warm sunshine and does not miss the winters…me too.

Last year, my partner and I decided that we wanted to show dogs. We found a breeder in California who is knowledgeable, patient and helpful with selecting the right dogs for us to show. We purchased a bitch Bayside’s Fantasy Land Girl and started showing her in February 2017. She finished in just 9 months in early November with a Best of Breed and a 5-point major.

When we wanted another show dog we again reached out to Dianna Texter and purchased Bayside’s Favorite Chipmunk as the next addition to our family. He started showing in September at 6 months old and has earned 2 majors (8 points) towards his championship.

Our three TMT’s are a huge part of our lives and have impressed upon our extended human family as well.

We are interested in joining the AMTC to further our knowledge of the breed and to make friends with others who share our interests. Having attended the MTOY and the banquet in Orlando further impressed upon us the decision to join the club.

This year we have met several wonderful people and they have provided us with advice in a true spirit of sportsmanship. We could not have done what we accomplished this year without everyone’s support. Sincerely, Doug Jordan

25 PUBLIC EDUCATION

In The Jungle, The Mighty Jungle, The Lioness Roared! Orlando's “Meet the Breeds” was a massive success for many reasons. We used the booth as a meeting spot to help the Health committee collect samples for the Genome Project, we had a fantastic showing of support from Manchester owners far and wide, and last, but not least, the booth earned a Terrier Group Two!

26 PUBLIC EDUCATION

I'd like to thank everyone that stopped by and helped no matter how briefly. Participation is one the categories the booths are judged on, so having you all there was a huge help. So, thank you all for all of your support. I hope to see you all there again this year at our “Meet the Breed” events..

AMTC FINANCIAL STATEMENTS

Letter from the Treasurer

To Recap 2017:

Began the year with 29617.72 + 26,110.08 in YTD revenue -25,776.72 in YTD Expenses Ended the Year With 29,951.08

Though I do not have the official letter in the mail from the State of California, I did receive written confirmation via the email from the Tax representative with the State Franchise Tax Board that The State of California has agreed to grant our 3500 petitions for Tax Exempt Status. I am not sure at this point if they have granted it retroactively or not, but that was my request. They did have me go back and file returns for 2013, 2014, 2015 & 2016 so I am hoping that was because I requested it retro- active to 2013. I will update the club in the next newsletter as I hope to have that confirmation long before then.

In January we received a very awesome donation from a very nice lady named Clema Damian who has been a long time Manchester enthusiast. She and her late husband knew Pauline Binek and wanted to make this donation on behalf of a breed they loved and spent a lifetime with.

I will look forward to finishing the recap of the Nationals after we have repaired a link between PayPal and our club checking; and I can move the rest of the revenues from the PayPal account into the checking account.

The club is in a very healthy state as this time ending January with $35082.72 in checking & $4415.70 in the club PayPal account.

Thank you to all for your efforts in making this possible.

Respectfully,

Dianna Texter Treasurer

54 JUDGES EDUCATION REPORT

The 2017 AMTC National is in the books and now history. I was so pleased to be able to attend and meet up with old friends; and actually meet in person and form many new friendships with people that I only knew through Face Book.

A HUGE "Thank You" goes out to all that Mentored with me at our National; Ginny Antia, Roberta Berman, Jim Burrows, Pat Hall, Jerri Hobbs, Sue Thrasher. We mentored 15 aspiring Manchester Terrier Judges ring side and had two Manchester Judges that are licensed come join us to observe the entire entry because "they just don't see enough of the breed on their assignments." We welcomed all with open arms. It was wonderful for each to take time out of their busy schedule to observe.

AMTC Judged Ed was contacted by Celeste Gonzalez, NC Triangle Area Judges Ed Group to present a Seminar at the Tar Heel Cluster at the NC State Fair Grounds in Raleigh, NC March 21 - 25, 2018. I'm very pleased to announce Mari-Beth O'Neil will be our Presenter. This will be an AKC accredited Seminar and hands on workshop.

I was also contacted by Al Ferruggiaro, Chair of the Mason - Dixon Dog Judges Association with an interest in hosting a presentation on Manchester . The presentations are held in Frederick, Maryland, on Tuesday evenings at 7:15 pm and lasting approximately 90 minutes. A list of presentation dates available were sent for May-October, 2018.

Jim Burrows will be our Presenter and will work out a date for the presentation with Al Ferruggiaro and report back to this committee.

The 2018 AMTC National will be held in Lexington, Kentucky this year in September! Our Judges Education Seminar will be on August 31, 2018, the day before our National Specialty. More information TBA.

Once again, I'm looking forward to attending this National Specialty too! ❤ My Hotel reservations have been made at the host hotel. I've got a few more details that need to be ironed out, and literally, I'll be good to go!

Best wishes for the New Year!

Canine Flu information

Zoetis has a new bivalent Vanguard vaccine to combat the H3N2 and H3N8 versions of the canine flu. The flu is still present in the Midwest and many of the southern and eastern states. If you are going to dog shows in these areas it is recommended your dogs be vaccinated. Canine flu can cause fatal pneumonia in some dogs. --- Judith Fleischaker DVM, MS - [email protected] Oakland Veterinary Referral Service, Emergency and Critical Care, 248-334-6877 ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Manchester of the Year

The Second Annual Manchester Terrier of the Year competition was exuberant and exciting for all involved. From the swinging songs to the fabulous outfits, everyone was putting their best foot and paw forward for this special event.

This year, the selected judges were from across the country: All-Breed Judge Mr. George Milutinovich of California, Handler Mr. Robert Chaffin of Texas and Breeder Mrs. Michelle Barlak of New Jersey.

There were 11 Standard Manchesters and 9 Toy Manchesters vying for Top Dog honors in this invitation only competition. In addition to an engraved medallion, each entrant also received a copy of the full color Manchester Terrier of the Year Annual. The audience enjoyed hearing each song and applauded each dog as they circled the room, stacked and posed. The judges then each examined the dogs and completed their score sheets. The ring stewards, Paul Holser and Sue Thrasher quickly tabulated and recorded the scores. A special thank you to Rachel and David Jonas who supplied their camera to capture this remarkable night.

In the end, Trina Taylor-Ghione and GCHB Noble's Random Reaction at Toria aka Riot “zoot suited” their way to Top Dog honors as the highest scoring SMT. Madonna Lee and Carolyn Horowitz sunshine of their life, GCHS Rustic Lane Sunshine Daydream aka Sunny Boo Boo was Top scoring TMT.

The Runners Up were GCHG Medley's War Hunt aka Gunner with Jenell Tonini-Zanotto and TMT GCHS Passport Sea Air with Taylor Blankenship. The judges truly enjoyed the atmosphere of the evening and the quality of dogs in both varieties.

Thank you to everyone that made the 2nd Annual MTOY as special and enjoyable as the first. Note that the 3rd Annual Manchester Terrier of the year event is scheduled during the Lexington, KY AMTC National on September 2, 2018. Also, there are still a few 2017 MTOY Annuals still available for purchase. Please email Robin Gates at [email protected] for further information.

See you all in just 7 months!! Robin Gates, MTOY Director

From the Archives, 1938 Gazette

The American Toy Manchester Terrier Club offers the following specials at all AKC licensed shows, for competition of members only. To assure a win being counted, members must notify the Secretary of the American Toy Manchester Terrier Club, in writing, of each win within thirty days of such win. The Janet Mack Challenge Cup for the "Toy Manchester Terrier of The Year.". Each Best of Breed win made by a member shall count a number of points equal to the Championship points awarded to the best of winners at such shows.

The name of the member-owned dog or bitch winning the greatest of such points in each calendar year will be engraved on such trophy annually.

The trophy may be held by the owner of such winner until Dec. 1 of the ensuing year at which time it must be returned to the Secretary. Any member winning the trophy four different years, not necessarily consecutive nor with the same dog, shall win it outright.

The 1938 American-Bred Male Award of $25 in cash, or trophy of that value, if preferred, to the member who in 1938, wins the largest number of blue ribbons in the American-Bred class with males. The same award applies for the 1938 American-Bred Bitches Award.

At a recent show, two dogs entered in the class for Toy Manchester Terriers, puppy bitches. One nice little specimen received a well merited first, later going on to reserve winners. Of course the judge had no way of knowing that the other still lacked 14 days of reaching the minimum six months of age. But; what a puppy! Not only was it sadly lacking in breed type, but from the ringside at least, it did not show a visible black or tan hair. No, it was not hairless. It had a short coat, the color of which could perhaps best be described as a light, clear even Maltese, or almost "turquoise" blue.

81 From the Archives, 1938 Gazette, Cont.

Since that show I have had three inquires for a "Blue Toy Manchester.". Try to tell these people that " there be no such animal. "

With their own eyes they saw this "blue Freak" receive a second prize as a Toy Manchester Terrier. To be sure, it may be easier to "hand out a ribbon" in such cases than risk an unpleasant argument or scene which might develop from an explanation of "want of merit." That, however does not change the fact that such an award is often misleading and certainly does not aid in breed improvement. A. F. Rolf, Secretary ATMTC.

*Hope you'll enjoy these little blasts from the past!

I was recently contacted by a magazine doing an article on GCH Cottage Lakes Our Lady of Fatima. They requested her show career so I had to order it from AKC, the printer was very busy. Shown 495 times from March 2014 until this past weekend at Royal Canin Lucia accumulated the following

BOV 475 BIS 9 RBIS 8 Group 1st = 60 Group 2nd = 82 Group 3rd = 60 Group 4th = 43

That's an almost 50% group placement record which is unheard of for a TMT in the US. Lucia truly lived up to her name sake! Thank you to my wonderful husband Marcelo Chagas for all you hard work and dedication to our special lady. Also thank you to all the judges over the years who recognized her outstanding quality. GCHS Nobles Random Reaction at Toria

I’m a little late in posting, but the 2017 stats are out. Number One All Systems. Riot has achieved the unthinkable at only two and a half years old. In 2017 he attained 45 group placements. Including 10 Group Ones, a Reserve Best in Show and a National Specialty Best in Show. He went from a champion to 100 points shy of his Gold Grand Championship. He also was voted Standard Manchester Terrier of the Year.

Riot was also the first Standard Manchester to go Best in Show at the prestigious desert empire terrier club of Southern California Show on 1/5/18. He defeated over 400 terriers. Breed judge was Dr. Andrea Bradford and group judge was Mr. Robert Hutton

I cannot give enough thanks to the judges that have recognized him, the breeders that have complimented him and my friends that have supported us. You’ve made 2017 amazing. We look forward to an even better 2018. Cheers to the future!

Born in Chicago and raised in Arlington Heights, Illinois, Jack lived for many years with his family in Palatine, Illinois, serving as mayor of the town for eight years. An avid boater, he loved sailing in Lake Michigan and later off the Carolina coast.

After retirement from business in Chicago and a few years living in coastal South Carolina, Jack and his wife, the late Susanne Moodie, moved to Lawson in the late 80s. 90 NEWS AND NOTES, Cont.

The most important information for pet owners can be summed up in four words: Pets get cold too.

“Use your common sense – if it’s negative-20 your pet doesn’t want to be out there any more than you do,” said Dir. Kimberly Helmbold, a BluePearl veterinarian who is board-certified in veterinary emergency and critical care.

“The biggest thing to realize is that our pets experience the same effects from the cold as we as humans do, Helmbold added. “So whatever you’re going to do for yourself, do for your pet.”

Here are some key tips:

• Limit time outside for your dog or cat. A dog might spend all day in a doghouse on some spring or fall days, but definitely not in the freezing cold. “Animals can experience hypothermia,” Helmbold said. They also can get frostbite. • It’s obviously fine to let your dog outside to do his business, or to go on a walk, even in the snow. But don’t make it an 8-hour hike, even if you’re up for it yourself. Also, keep your pet on a leash during walks. And don’t let a dog run off a hiking trail into the snow. “You never know how deep that snow is going to be,” Helmbold said. • When pets are outside, make sure to give them plenty water. Staying well-hydrated is important to circulation and good circulation helps keep the body warm. • If a de-icer is used on your driveway or the sidewalk outside your apartment, make sure it is a pet-friendly variety. Many types are toxic to dogs, and they will lick the salt from between their toes after getting back inside. Talk to your landlord about this if necessary. • Surprisingly, winter also creates indoor hazards for pets. Cats love to find a warm auto engine to curl up in – but things go badly when you fire up the car in the morning. Antifreeze, which sometimes pools on the garage floor, seems tasty to pets but is downright deadly. If possible, don’t leave pets unattended in the garage.

Now that you know how to keep your pets safe, don’t forget to have some wintertime fun also. Here are some suggestions. As long as you take precautions, there’s no reason you can’t have fun with your pets even when the mercury drops.

98 Health Chair Report Submitted by Michelle Barlak, [email protected]

The AMTC and CMTC recently completed the first of two breed surveys. The first survey was a survey or breeders and you may review the results at http://www.canadamt.com/2017-survey.html

The next survey is for breeders and owners to fill out on their individual dogs. This is for anyone who has owned a Manchester (pet owners included) since the last survey was completed. Please help the breed by filling out the General Health survey for each dog that is currently alive, or who died AFTER January 1, 2002. You may access it at the link above. Amanda Kelly has really conducted the bulk of the work on this project. Thank you Amanda!

Blossom Scott, Amanda Kelly, Regina Allen and I have formed a committee to work on a new project with the University of Minnesota. We will be coordinating an effort to locate the gene mutation that will hopefully lead to the development of a test for lymphangiectasia, a sudden onset and life-threatening gastrointestinal disease that has been seen in the breed. Right now we are looking to collect DNA and medical records from dogs that have a diagnosis of lymphangiectasia, Protein-losing enteropathy (PLE) or Irritable Bowel Disease (IBD). Please get in touch with me as soon as possible if you have a connection to dogs with these diseases and are willing to contribute to the study. The University of Pennsylvania has already done some research into the disease and will be assisting Dr. Eva Furrow at the U of M so the same team that brought about the Juvenile Dilated Cardiomyopathy test hopes to bring about a test for this emerging issue in the breed. Be on the lookout for a web site that we are working on, that will provide more information on this important research.

As I stated at the general membership meeting in December, I'm really pleased to see the number of breeders who are utilizing the tests for Juvenile Dilated Cardiomyopathy and Xanthinuria. I would like to remind our breeders about the importance of keeping carriers in the gene pool. They are absolutely harmless when bred to clear dogs and may carry vital genes that would be lost to the breed by their elimination from the gene pool. I know it is tempting to breed clear to clear to save money on future testing but think about all the money that would be spent on health problems that will eventually emerge as a result of the shrinking gene pool. To that end, I don’t expect everyone to be an expert on such things and I’m always happy to discuss breeding, health testing and genetics so please reach out to me if you have any questions.

Last but not least, Lisa Nonog, Tammi Meyers and Regina Allen helped to coordinate a blood draw at the AMTC National in December for the National Institutes of Health Dog Genome Project at the request of the institute. Thank you ladies and thank you to all our donors! While this project does not directly impact our breed in the immediate future, it is expected to make an impact on NIH’s research and efforts to better understand the dog genome and improve the long term health of man’s best friend. For more information about this project, visit https://research.nhgri.nih.gov/dog_genome/

99 Rescue Chair Report Submitted by Michelle Barlak, [email protected]

Jerri Gillean has adopted out Jojo the Standard Manchester, since my last report for the newsletter. We helped more than a dozen dogs in 2017, with 10 of them receiving grants from the AMTC rescue fund. Unfortunately, AMTC Rescue was not selected to receive the grant from Westminster Kennel Club. They will not be accepting new proposals before 2019. Keep up to date with our adoptable pet list here: https://www.petfinder.com/pet-search?shelter_id=NY207

So far in 2018, we have received two requests for rescue grants which the board is considering. Both of these requests were made for dogs that are with Safe Haven Rescue, who has received grants for previous rescues. One of these dogs is a senior, standard male who is currently on the west coast and looking for a home. Contact me for more information.

I’m really grateful for the help and support that AMTC rescues have received from the membership and friends of the breed. I remember a time when pleas for help felt like they were falling on deaf ears and I think we have really turned that around with the effort being spread around. We’re no longer depending on the same two or three people who quickly become burned out. I have a lot of hope for the future of our breed based on the positive attitudes of those who have been stepping up to make a difference. I’m proud to be a part of this club.
