EPC Exhibit 134-10 May 20, 2011 the LIBRARY of CONGRESS EPC Exhibit 134-10 May 20, 2011 THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS Dewey Section To: Caroline Kent, Chair Decimal Classification Editorial Policy Committee Cc: Members of the Decimal Classification Editorial Policy Committee Karl E. Debus-López, Chief, U.S. General Division From: Giles Martin, Assistant Editor Winton Matthews, Consulting Assistant Editor Dewey Decimal Classification OCLC Online Computer Library Center, Inc Re: 636.72-636.76 Dog breeds Magdalena Svanberg, of the Kungliga biblioteket/National Library of Sweden, pointed out that the arrangement of dog breeds in 636.72-636.76 was different from that used by the Féderation Cynologique Internationale (FCI). The FCI classification is found at http://www.fci.be/nomenclature.aspx, and at the top level is: Group 1 Sheepdogs and Cattle Dogs (except Swiss Cattle Dogs) Group 2 Pinscher and Schnauzer - Molossoid Breeds - Swiss Mountain and Cattle Dogs Group 3 Terriers Group 4 Dachshunds Group 5 Spitz and Primitive types Group 6 Scenthounds and Related Breeds Group 7 Pointing Dogs Group 8 Retrievers - Flushing Dogs - Water Dogs Group 9 Companion and Toy Dogs Group 10 Sighthounds 1 The American Kennel Club (AKC) arrangement, followed by Dewey, is very different at the top level: Sporting Group 636.752 Hound Group 636.753 Working Group 636.73 Terrier Group 636.755 Toy Group 636.76 Non-Sporting Group 636.72 Herding Group 636.737 Miscellaneous Class (breeds which have not yet been put into the other groups) (The order given here is that on the AKC’s webpage, http://www.akc.org/breeds/index.cfm?nav_area=breeds ) The situation is made more complex because 636.72-636.76 contain several references to breeds as “(United Kingdom)” as a shortcut for saying that this group is one of the groupings of the Kennel Club of the United Kingdom (KC). These groupings are listed on http://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/item/2102 as: * Hound * Working * Gundog * Terrier * Utility * Pastoral * Toy The qualifier “(United Kingdom)” does not comply with our Editorial Rules, and does not make it clear that these are KC groupings. In two cases we can just drop the qualifier, since only the KC refers to “gundogs” and “utility dogs”. However, there is a problem with “sporting dogs” in the Schedules, since that term is used in the AKC sense as the caption at 636.752, and with the qualifier “(United Kingdom)” in the class-here note at 2 636.75. The problem is that the KC does not have a “sporting” group. I propose dropping “sporting group (United Kingdom)” at 636.75, and dropping “(United Kingdom)” at the other places where it is used as a qualifier. In addition, the “pastoral group” of the KC is not currently given a place in Dewey. It closely matches 636.737 Herding dogs, so I propose putting it in a class-here note at that number. I have tried to map the FCI classification to Dewey, with the following general results: Group 1: Sheepdogs and Cattle Dogs (except Swiss Cattle Dogs) Section 1: Sheepdogs – DDC 636.737, but some breeds classed here by FCI are classed in the Working Group (DDC 636.73), and the Schipperke classed here by the FCI is classed in the Non-Sporting Group (Dewey 636.72) by the AKC. Section 2: Cattle Dogs (except Swiss Cattle Dogs) – DDC 636.737 Group 2: Pinscher and Schnauzer - Molossoid Breeds - Swiss Mountain and Cattle Dogs Section 1: Pinscher and Schnauzer type – Scattered in DDC 636.73, 636.736, 636.755 and 636.76. “Schnauzers” is indexed at 636.73. The best place for comprehensive works on Pinschers would be 636.736. It’s proposed to change the caption there from “Doberman pinscher,” and to add a see reference to 636.76. Section 2: Molossoid breeds – DDC 636.73, except that the bulldog and the Shar- Pei classed here by FCI are classed in the Non-Sporting Group (Dewey 636.72) by the AKC. I found little or no literary warrant for “molossoid” or “molosser.” Section 3: Swiss Mountain and Cattle Dogs – DDC 636.737 Group 3: Terriers Section1: Large and medium-sized Terriers & Section 2: Small-sized Terriers – DDC 636.755, with one exception, the Manchester terrier, which FCI treats as one breed, but which AKC and DDC treat as two breeds, with the toy Manchester terrier in DDC 636.76. Section 3: Bull type Terriers – DDC 636.7559. Section 4: Toy Terriers – DDC 636.76 Group 4: Dachshunds The Dachshund has its own FCI group, but in DDC is split between 636.7538 Dachshund and 636.76 Toy dogs, for the miniature Dachshund. Group 5: Spitz and Primitive types This group is widely scattered in DDC. Section 1: Nordic Sledge Dogs – DDC 636.73 3 Section 2: Nordic Hunting Dogs – The AKC seems to be missing some of these breeds, including the Laikas and the Karelian bear dog. The Norwegian elkhound is at DDC 636.753 and the Finnish Spitz is at DDC 636.72. Section 3: Nordic Watchdogs and Herders – DDC 636.737. Section 4: European Spitz – Includes the Keeshond at DDC636.72 and the Pomeranian at DDC 636.6. Section 5: Asian Spitz and related breeds – Includes the Chow Chow at DDC 636.72 and the Akita at DDC 636.73. Section 6: Primitive type – Includes the Canaan dog at DDC 636.737, the Basenji and the Pharaoh hound at DDC 636.7536, and the Mexican hairless at DDC 636.76. Section 7: Primitive type - Hunting Dogs – Generally would go in DDC 636.753 Hounds (though some are not classified by the AKC), with the Ibizan hound in DDC 636.7532. Group 6: Scenthounds and Related Breeds This group generally corresponds with DDC 636.7536 Scent hounds, with the Beagle at DDC 636.7537. The FCI includes the Dalmatian as a “related breed” here, but the AKC classed that in the Non-Sporting Group, DDC 636.72. Group 7: Pointing Dogs This group generally corresponds with DDC 636.752 Sporting dogs, and its subdivisions 636.7524-636.7526. Group 8: Retrievers - Flushing Dogs - Water Dogs Section 1: Retrievers – Matches DDC 636.7527 Retrievers. Section 2: Flushing Dogs – Generally corresponds with DDC 636.7524 Spaniels. Section 3: Water Dogs – Scattered, with the Portuguese water dog at DDC 636.73 and the American water spaniel at 636.7524. Group 9: Companion and Toy Dogs Most of the breeds in this group are in DDC 636.72 Nonsporting dogs or in DDC 636.76 Toy dogs. An exception is that the LCSH “Cavalier King Charles spaniel” has been mapped to DDC 636.7524: this might be a mistake, since the AKC puts this breed in the Toy Group. Group 10: Sighthounds This group generally corresponds with DDC 636.7532 Gazehounds (Sighthounds) and the numbers linked to that by see references 636.7533-636.7535. The exception is the Italian greyhound at 636.76. 4 Proposals for change I don’t see any way of making Dewey consistent with the FCI arrangement as long as we follow the AKC arrangement, since the two systems are so different, and some FCI groups are scattered in AKC and in Dewey. However, I think we can provide some guidance on where some of the FCI categories go, and do some tidying up. 636.08864 Animals for people with disabilities and illnesses An expansion is warranted here, based just on what is classed at 636.70886, with “companion animals, guide animals, service animals” in a class-here note here, with a see-also reference to 636.0887. Add the following index terms: “Companion animals (Working animals)”; “Guide animals”; “Service animals.” 636.0887 Pets Put “companion animals” in a class-here note here, with a see-also reference to 636.08864. Add the following index term: “Companion animals (Pets).” 636.708864 Add the following index terms: “Companion dogs (Working dogs)”; “Guide dog”; “Service dogs.” 636.70887 Add the following index term: “Companion dogs (Pets).” 636.72 Nonsporting dogs If the FCI term “Companion dogs” were mapped anywhere in 636.72-636.76, it would be here. However, companion animals probably belong in 636.0887 Pets; and companion dogs in 636.70887, since they can be any breed of dog, and would certainly include toy dogs. I suggest putting a class-elsewhere reference pointing to 636.70887. The qualifier “(United Kingdom)” will be dropped after “utility breeds.” 636.736 Doberman pinscher As I say above, this is the best place for “comprehensive works on Pinschers,” so it is proposed to change the caption to “Pinschers.” However, that means we also need to add a note here, “For affenpinscher, miniature pinscher, see 636.76.” 636.737 Herding dogs Add “Sheepdogs” as an electronic Relative Index. (At present it is given as two words.) Add “pastoral breeds” in a class-here note. 5 636.75 Sporting dogs, hounds, terriers Delete “sporting dogs (United Kingdom)” 636.752 Sporting dogs Both the AKC and the FCI talk about “pointing breeds” or “pointing dogs.” The AKC, at http://www.akc.org/events/field_trials/pointing_breeds/eligible_breeds.cfm, says that the following are “eligible to participate in Pointing Breed Field Trials”: Brittanys, Pointers, English Setters, German Shorthaired Pointers, German Wirehaired Pointers, Gordon Setters, Irish Red & White Setters, Irish Setters, Spinone Italiano, Vizslas, Weimaraners, and Wirehaired Pointing Griffons. This is a broader group of dogs than Pointers at 636.7525. It is proposed to add “pointing dogs” to the class-here note at 636.752. Delete the qualifier “(United Kingdom)” after “gundogs” 636.7524 Spaniels Add a class-here note with “flushing dogs.” 636.7524 Pointers Add a class-elsewhere reference to 636.752 for “pointing dogs.” 636.7536 Scent hounds (Tracking hounds) Add “Scenthounds” as an electronic Relative Index term.

  • History of the Pomeranian
THE HISTORY OF THE POMERANIAN by Cathy Driggers & Kelly D. Reimschiissel With more coat than body, Pomeranians have quite an interesting history behind them. The Pomeranian, as we know it today, descended originally from the Spitz family of dogs in the frozen Arctic region of Iceland. These Spitz dogs were much larger than the modern Pom as evidenced by their primary purpose of herding, pulling sleds, and guarding. In Italy they were used to watch over their owner’s items. The Pomeranians would alert their owner of someone coming or attempting to steal their valuables. Spitz breeds mean a type of dog that has several wolf- like characteristics. For instance, small ears to help reduce the risk of frostbite. The insulating undercoat that is denser than the guard hairs to trap the warmth and protect them from the heat. At some point in time, the Spitz was transported into Europe, most commonly along the southern coast of the Baltic Sea. This particular Baltic region was called Pomerania, which now includes parts of present day Poland and Germany, and is where the Pomeranian name came from. Pommore or Pommern means “on the sea.” Canine historians also believe that this is the location that the breed was first downsized to about 30-40 lbs. More specifically Pomeranians are part of the German Spitzen group, a subgroup of the Spitz type, which is comprised of five different sizes of dogs. FCI and German historians consider the German Spitz to be the oldest breed of dog in Central Europe from which other breeds have been produced.
