5 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Hello all

Hope everyone is doing well and your four legged friends are too. The show season is in full swing and I've seen many brags and nice wins by many of our members as well as performance titles being gained. Congrats to all and keep up the hard work. Way to represent our breed. Also I want to encourage everyone to get out with your Manchesters and show them off to the public. We need to get more people interested in our wonderful breed.

The board has been working on the directory and getting the membership renewals finalized. We have had a lot of interest in the new website and several people have taking advantage of the online membership application process. Special thanks to Diane Texter and Kathy Nissen for helping work though the hiccups getting it working correctly. The online bill pay is also going over very well. All of these changes should help our club appeal to newer members.

Plans for the next couple of Nationals are in the works and should be great fun. Also I would like to encourage any one that would like to do more for the club please volunteer for a committee. Contact Kathy for info on what we need.

Thanks again and see you guys around the ring.

Good luck everyone.

Jeremy McClister President AMTC

6 NOTES FROM THE NEWSLETTER EDITOR

Hi everyone – editing this newsletter is a lot like baking a cake. I make the cake four times a year – the same time each quarter every single year – so really you can put it on your calendar, set a timer and count on it. There are a lot of different ingredients that go into it each time: some sweet, some sour, some nutty and also some basics. If I have four of the ten ingredients – and I am waiting on six of them – I can’t make the “cake” when I should, and it’s not really fair to the folks that are waiting and hungry for their cake (or those folks that get me their ingredients on time - bless you!). If I have the same old ingredients every time, the cake will be boring, so it’s super nice when I get spices from all over the country from lots of different people.

We have THE very best breed of – and their human companions are pretty awesome too - and I always want our newsletter to reflect that. Please contribute! So here’s to happy baking… or should I say barking? Hope you enjoy this quarter’s “slice”… =)

AMTC WEBMASTER COMMENTS

President Jeremy McClister is the Webmaster for our website. Please send any suggestions & / or additions to him at [email protected]. There is a members’ only section where AMTC documents can be accessed. The site is: https://americanmanchesterterrierclub.wildapricot.org/

Contact your District Governor if you do not have log in information. The online Newsletters are only accessible through this login.

REPORT OF THE SECRETARY

It's hard to believe it's May already. Where has the time gone!

The club website is up and running and we have received very positive feedback. As with any new venture, we had some glitches that were taken care of so please utilize this venue not only for breed information but for directing those you may come in contact with that are interested in our wonderful breed. There is also a downloadable membership application for those of you that may know of anyone wishing to join the AMTC so feel free to print them and take them with you to shows or classes or give to your 'puppy people' - great to have on hand when potential members ask about the club and joining. If you haven't taken the time to browse through the website, please do so: https://americanmanchesterterrierclub.wildapricot.org/

7 REPORT OF THE SECRETARY, Cont.

If you have any questions, concerns or ideas for something you'd like to see on the website, please feel free to contact the board.

Marla Gangler has graciously agreed to fill out the term of District 2's Governor vacancy. The board would also like to thank Sherrie Brock for stepping in to fill the vacancy when the previous Governor moved out of the district and also for all of her hard work and dedication to the position. Marla is also chairing the 2017 National Specialty which will be held (tentaviely) the Friday before the AKC/Royal Canin Shows in December in Florida. More information will be forthcoming in future newsletters.

The Good Sportsmanship Award goes to Susan Thrasher.

It was brought to the Board's attention that those receiving awards for placements at our National and other AKC Invitationals be recognized for these accomplishments. It was agreed that those dogs attaining placement awards will receive an Honorable Mention in our newsletter so please be sure to provide that information, along with the win photo if you have one, to to me ([email protected]). This includes all venues of exhibition.

It was also discussed and agreed that for Judges' Education Seminars, winning dogs of the past and present, be utilized when possible. This would provide a broader visualization of our breed.

We have approved four memberships the first quarter of 2016 and there are currently seven pending approval.

The Agility Trial held in Auburn, Washington in April and chaired by Elaine Sperry raised approximately $1000.00. Well done! There will be another Agility Trial the end of July in Livermore, California.

Please remember, this is your club so any ideas, concerns, committee volunteers, etc. are welcome.

Respectfully,

Kathy Nissen Am. Manchester Terrier Club Secretary

NEW MEMBERSHIP APPLICATIONS

PLEASE NOTE: New AMTC members are approved by the AMTC Board. As the Board is seldom familiar with applicants, they rely on current members for input into their decision. Applicant information is printed in the Newsletter to solicit comments, positive and negative, regarding each applicant. Please help by sending all comments in writing (email is fine) to the Secretary Kathy Nissen to be received within 30 days of the postmark on this newsletter.

Please spread the word about our beautiful breed and our club. One idea is to give a newsletter subscription to each new puppy buyer.

Sabrina and Bette Peterson:

My name is Sabrina Peterson. I am 20 years old and have been involved with Manchester for almost 3 years now and showing just as long.

I got my first Manchester from Dianna Texter. His name is Prince and he is a Champion working on his Grand Championship. My niece, who is 10 years old, almost 11, has been showing him since she was 9. She is involved in Juniors and was the one to completed Prince's championship.

Along with Prince, I also have 3 other Manchester's. Lynx is a Grand Champion working towards her Bronze, Diamond is a Champion working towards her Grand Championship, and Bambi will be attending her first show in May.

I love the Manchester breed and am very excited to see what I can do to help make them an even better breed.

HEALTH REPORT

Dystocia in the Bitch Regina R. Allen DVM

Dystocia is defined as abnormal or difficult parturition (giving birth). Certain dog breeds, such as the bulldog, , , Pomeranian, and , are predisposed. Diagnosis is made based on the following criteria: the bitch is in Stage I labor for more than 12 hours, strong Stage II labor for more than 30 minutes, weak Stage II labor for more than 4 hours before the first puppy is born, more than 2 hours pass between births, and/or vulvar discharge is present for 2 hours without delivery of the first puppy. Green-black discharge is normal; however it indicates at least partial separation of at least one placenta, and the puppy or puppies need to be born shortly or oxygen deprivation will result. Additionally, if the bitch is compromised by

22

HEALTH REPORT, Cont. metritis, pregnancy toxemia, uterine torsion, uterine rupture, uterine horn herniation, sepsis, etc., she will show signs of abdominal pain, weakness, collapse, and shock. All of these are emergency situations!

Both maternal and fetal factors are involved in causing dystocia. Maternal factors include: uterine inertia, inadequate birth canal size, obstruction of a normal birth canal, and lack of normal abdominal muscular function. Fetal factors include: fetal oversize and abnormal positioning.

Uterine inertia is the most common cause of dystocia, and is defined as the lack of normal, sequential uterine contractions and subsequent failure to express the puppies through the birth canal. There are many potential causes of primary uterine inertia, including inherited breed disposition in some large/giant breeds along with those mentioned previously. Other causes are overstretching of the uterine musculature in large litters, insufficient oxytocin release in bitches with very small litters, uterine torsion, hypocalcemia, hypoglycemia, obesity, age-related changes, and exhaustion.

Dystocia may be treated either medically or surgically. The goal of medical treatment is to augment labor by increasing uterine contractions. This is indicated when the bitch is in good health and condition, the cervix is relaxed and dilated, fetal size is appropriate, and labor has not been prolonged. Oxytocin is the most common drug used to increase uterine contractions. However, it is absolutely contraindicated when there is possibility of an obstruction! Additionally, overusing oxytocin can reduce placental blood supply, causing hypoxia and compromise of the puppies. Calcium needs to be administered in conjunction with oxytocin because it increases the strength of uterine contractions. Bitches may be suffering from hypocalcemia even when blood calcium levels are normal, because it is the ionized form that is needed for uterine contraction. Additionally, fluid replacement to combat dehydration and glucose for hypoglycemic bitches are indicated. The goal of any treatment is to deliver live, vigorous puppies without compromising the heath of the dam. If the breeder has any doubt if their bitch is in trouble, it is better to take her in for a veterinary visit rather than potentially risk her life by waiting too long or administering inappropriate treatments.

Surgical treatment is via a C-section under general anesthesia. This procedure is done as rapidly as feasible to minimize anesthetic depression of the puppies. As the puppies are removed from the uterus, they need to be rubbed vigorously to both stimulate and dry them, and have their mouths suctioned to remove fluid. After they are breathing normally, the umbilical cords need to be tied off about 2-3 cm from the body, and then the umbilical stump disinfected with an iodine solution. Before placing each puppy in a warm box, it should be checked for congenital defects such as a cleft palate or deformed limbs. Neonatal puppies have poor thermoregulation, so it is essential to keep them warm and away from drafts. The bitch should be fully awake from surgery and monitored when she is introduced to her puppies. She may be tired and need to rest, but should be interested in eating and drinking and attentive to her babies. It is important that the puppies nurse, both to ingest colostrum and stimulate the release of oxytocin. “Clean-out” shots are not indicated unless there are no live puppies to nurse.

Definitions: Stage I labor: Begins with the onset of uterine contractions and ends when cervix is fully dilated. It is not easily recognized in the bitch because uterine contractions are not visible externally. The duration is normally 6 – 12 hours, but may last as long as 24 hours. Behavior changes are a more reliable way to determine the beginning of labor. She may be restless, nervous, refuse food, shiver, and pant.

Stage II labor: Begins with full dilation of the cervix and ends with delivery of the puppies. The onset of this stage is obvious, with abdominal muscle contractions and visible effort to expel puppies. On average, puppies are

23

HEALTH REPORT, Cont. delivered every 30 – 60 minutes, although the bitch may deliver a few puppies then rest before completing delivery.

HEALTH CHAIR REPORT By Michelle Barlak, AMTC Health Chair

If you have a Manchester die suddenly that is under 1 year of age, please consider donating the body for necropsy for the Juvenile Cardiomyopathy study. Contact Michelle Barlak at 585-329-4317 or [email protected] All information will be kept confidential

I'm so pleased to report that we reached our $15,000 goal for the Juvenile Cardiomyopathy genetic study! Thank you so much to all of you who generously donated. The first samples have been shipped off for genotyping. I will continue to report on the study progress as I receive updates from the research team.

24 HEALTH CHAIR REPORT, Cont.

I am currently working on recommendations for screening breeding stock for Legge-Calve-Perthes disease, which will be available in a future newsletter.

th, 2016 May 16 - Important Update: Update for Manchester Terrier/English Toy Terrier Juvenile Cardiomyopathy Study: The results from the samples that were sent for SNP genotyping are very promising. Dr. Eva Furrow from the University of Minnesota reports that based on the results, they will narrow their focus to a small region of chromosomes that contains roughly 20 genes. There, they hope they will find the mutation for JCM. They will keep us updated on their progress. Nothing is guaranteed but this is the outcome we were hoping to get from this important first step in the process. We're on the right path and we have high hopes that this research will result in a test for breeding stock that will help us prevent more deaths from this terrible disease.

Did You Paint That Dog's Nails?!?

I got asked that question a lot while we were around other “dog people” at this year's past Eukanuba. My answer was always "Yes. And here's why I did. People were going to meet most of the breeds recognized by the AKC, but at the end of the day, they'll remember the cute little dog with her silver toes”.

Now while you can't paint your dogs' toes silver if you're going to be showing, you can do other things to call attention to your dog and our wonderful breed.

Let your dog wear their sparkly collar, or their fuzzy coat, or spin in circles, or jump up and down; talk about how they sleep upside down in the shape of a pretzel! Just let them be positively memorable. As much as we can expound for hours on the elegance and history of our breed at a public event, we are just one of a number of dogs they will meet on that day.

However if you can make your dog memorable or tell a cute story about your dog, then when the 'Smith' family starts looking for a pet they'll remember that cute little dog with their boundless personality (and their adorable silver nails).

Our Trip to the Rally National 2016 By Sandy Svendsen

Our trip to the Rally National was so much fun!!!

I’ve never flown my dog (Taser, a Manchester Terrier) as “carry on,” so I purchased a Sherpa carrier with wheels and trained Taser to go in the Sherpa just for a few seconds to him spending the night in the Sherpa. Wednesday our flight departed Sacramento at 6 am.

I checked my luggage, and got both mine & Taser’s boarding passes, and up to TSA we went. At TSA they had me remove him from his Sherpa and hold him in my arms with no leash or collar and go to a separate area where they swabbed the front and back of each of my hands and then released me to get my belongings. I kept Taser out of his Sherpa and we walked through the terminal to our gate, and he got a lot of looks as he walked with his tail wagging through the airport as if he owned it.

At the gate I checked in and put Taser in his Sherpa. I even put a stuffed dog in there that he likes to curl up against so he’d be comfy. I flew first class so we were in the first group to board. I put him under the seat in front of me and he slept quietly the entire flight to Denver, while I drank OJ, coffee, and ate a veggie omelet.

When we disembarked the plane in Denver, Taser barked a few times and everyone looked at the Sherpa. I took him out of it and let him walk on leash with me through the terminal to our next gate, where I put him back in his Sherpa and boarded the plane to Tulsa, where he again was under the seat and quiet as a mouse.

At Tulsa, after disembarking I took him out of his Sherpa and we headed to baggage claim, got our rental car, and drove to the host hotel, The Double Tree at the Hilton in Tulsa. The grounds were beautiful, park like, well-groomed and huge, acres of lawn. I checked in and they gave me a bottle of water and a warm chocolate chip cookie, and said anytime you want a warm cookie just come and get one. Our second story room had a wall of windows that faced the lawn with no buildings in sight, so I could leave the curtains open, which was fantastic.

We drove to the fairgrounds, so I’d know where it is for the next morning, which was a straight shot 5 miles down the road. Then went to Tulsa Dog Training School and rented a ring for 40 minutes to train. We did some directed jumping, heeling, and rally. We headed back to the hotel and ordered a delicious dinner; Taser played with his toys, and we went for a walk on the beautiful hotel grounds so Taser would potty and get some more exercise.

Thursday morning I ordered an omelet, OJ, and coffee from room service, took Taser for a long walk on the hotel grounds, and drove to Tulsa Dog Training School to meet friends from California to practice a rally course. We then went to the fairgrounds to check in, pick our 3 X 5 spot to set up at, and get our armbands, novice course maps, pre purchased products (shirts, jackets, etc.), catalog, and AKC gift bag.

44 Rally News, Cont.

We returned to our hotel to relax and review course maps, and then I went to dinner at a fabulous restaurant owned by one of the local kennel club members. I ordered salmon topped with asparagus topped with crab meat, polka dot Riesling, and coconut cream pie (delicious) and the ambiance was wonderful. Little Taser napped on the front seat of the car under his fleece blanket while I dined.

Friday, the day of the Rally National, I began the day with a vegie omelet, coffee, and OJ and headed to the fairgrounds and parked nice and close. The huge hall was packed with dogs, crates, rings, and people. We walked around, chatted with other people, made some new friends, met people in person that I met on Facebook that live in Tulsa that helped me with restaurant choices and where the unsafe areas were to stay away from.

There were 8 rings and a warm up ring with a person monitoring that exhibitors followed AKC warm up ring rules. The rings ran smoothly and quickly with no down time. A few dogs before our turn, I walked Taser around to wake him up and do our warm up, and then it was our turn to go in the ring.

In we went, executed each exercise correctly, and the judge gave us a perfect score of 100. It was several hours for our next ring because of the lunch break. We warmed up, went into the ring, and had a forge on the fast which caused him to bump into me on the 270 Left, so we got a score of 99. Novice cumulative final results were: both first and second place scores of 200; both third and fourth place scores of 199. Taser and I came in fourth out of 80 dogs in our class!

We took part in the award presentation for the top ten placements of the novice class, where Doug Ljungren VP of Sports & Events gave us our 4th place ribbon and a congratulatory handshake, Pam Manaton Director of Obedience, Rally, & Tracking gave us a plaque and a congratulatory handshake, and we passed by all the judges seated in the ring, on our way out. We then went to have our group class award photos with the judges. Also, I was one of 3 Dee Dee Anderson students of DD’s Dog Training in Lodi that exhibited in the Rally National and all 3 of us placed in the top 4 of our respective classes, so we took a group photo to give her in appreciation.

That night I ordered some skewered shrimp wrapped in bacon and basil pesto on angel hair pasta in mango butter sauce topped with julienned sautéed veggies, cheese cake, and a glass of polka dot Riesling and relaxed in our room. Later Taser and I went for another nice walk on the hotel grounds.

Saturday we awoke at 3:30 am to check out of the hotel, drive to the airport, turn in the rental car, get through TSA and this time I left Taser out of his Sherpa which made the TSA line enjoyable because everyone wanted to pet Taser and people asked lots of questions. The flights home were uneventful except a female flight attendant stopped us on the way to our gate and asked to take a picture of Taser, and on one of the flights the person sitting next to me said “your luggage sneezed.” I explained “my dog’s in there.” She said “You have a dog in there?”

Overall the rally national experience was wonderful. So happy Taser and I flew instead of drove, I picked a nice hotel, we placed in the top 4 in novice, and we represented for Manchester Terriers and Dee Dee Anderson’s DD’s Dog Training.

Editor’s Note: I loved this story – I could almost taste the food! Thanks Sandy for sharing it!

Specialty Shows Staybridge Dr. Carol Beuchat PhD is a vertebrate biologist with broad expertise and research experience that encompasses physiology, Hotel - ecology, behavior, and evolution of every vertebrate group except fishes Fairfield, (mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians). She has over 30 years of experience California working in both the field and the laboratory, asking questions about the .com interactions of animals with their environment and the mechanisms they use to cope with particular physiological challenges. Her background in comparative biology and an interest in the biology of dogs motivated the formation of the Institute of Canine Biology as a means of bringing scientists studying various aspects of canine biology together with the dog breeders and owners who have vast collective experience and knowledge of dogs.

The increasing number of genetic disorders in dogs are a huge concern for breeders, who lack the tools and resources to address these problems. At the same time, there is a revolution in genetic research fueled by the discovery of the dog as a model animal in which to study genetic disease in humans. The possibilities for fruitful interaction between the scientists and the dog breeders and owners are potentially endless.

Carol sits on the Board of the Mongolian Bankhar Dog Project, and she is a member of the Species Survival Commission of the Conservation Breeding Specialist Group (CBSG) at the International Union for Conservation of Nature. Have you heard about “Barn Hunt”??

When I set off in March 2013 to attend the AKC National Agility trials held in Tulsa, Oklahoma, I had no idea what an adventure I was getting ready to take. My main intention of that trip was to walk around and watch some wonderful agility dogs competing, to hopefully see some great collies from other parts of the country, and to do a little research gathering about some small dog breeds that I had been considering as an addition to my fur kids. I had no idea the fun that I was about to learn about. I spent several hours that day just walking around and casually talking to people whose dogs caught my eye. I spent quite a bit of time talking with a woman who had a cute border collie and mix. I explained to her that I was thinking about getting a Toy Manchester Terrier as my next dog. She then took a few minutes to clue me in about a brand new sport that had just been officially created and that AKC had blessed by allowing its titles to be added to AKC registered names.

86 NEWS AND NOTES, Cont.

I, of course, had heard of Earth Dog events, but I was all ears when she started describing this new sport called Barn Hunt that any dog (purebred or mix) could participate in. She encouraged me to go to the Barn Hunt website and look to see registration information as well as information about groups that were forming and locations of upcoming trials.

Being a canine performance enthusiast for many years, I could barely wait to get home and check it all out. I found the website and jumped into reading everything I could find on the subject. I discovered that the first Inaugural Trial to be held for this new sport was going to be held in Columbia, MO on April 13th & 14th, 2013. I decided to register one of my collies, who I knew liked to hunt lizards in the backyard, to just see what it was all about. I completed her registration and filled out my entry form for the trial. About that time, I decided that if I was going to drive that far for a trial I might as well enter both collies, so I completed the same for the second dog. Once I sent my entries, I found out that the trial had already completely filled for the first day and had a waiting list. I decided that even entries on Sunday only would be fun, so I went on with my plans.

There was so much excitement in the air when we arrived at the location for the Barn Hunt. Since they had actually started the previous day, there were plenty of folks that were willing to provide advice. I listened carefully to the judges briefing and then positioned myself near the ring to watch a few runs. This is a sport that is both fun and exciting for both the handler and the dog. It has elements of instinct, skill, and athleticism. I would like to tell you a little bit about this wonderful new sport.

So what exactly is Barn Hunt? It is a performance event which allows any breed of dog (purebred or mixed breed) to participate. It was developed by Robin Nuttall as a way to provide a sport similar to Earth Dog but which would allow larger dogs to participate. The dogs are hunting for live rats in an atmosphere that simulates hunting in a barn. Rats are contained in a PVC tube designed according to Barn Hunt specifications to provide maximum security and comfort for the rat. For those that are worried…. no rats are harmed or killed. Barn Hunt rules have been designed to protect the rats, much like the AKC rules that protect livestock at herding trials. In this case, I believe that the rats are actually much safer than herding livestock.

The sport offers an Instinct test to help determine if a dog is interested and/or capable of the skills required in an official trial class. Titles are earned similar to other performance events with the first being a Novice title and then Open, Senior, Masters…etc . up to RATCH which then goes to numbers. Each run is judged and scored based on the required elements for that class level but the individual elements may be accomplished in any order. Novice requires that the dog (1) find the rat (2) climb (or jump) onto at least one hay/straw bale and (3) go through one hay/straw tunnel (which is 18” tall). Each class has a time limit and runs are timed for that purpose. It is a pass or fail competition. Times are used to determine the fastest dog in each class, but not by each height. There are three height groups which include small, medium and large. There is no restriction on how small or large a dog can be to compete, but they must be able to complete the climb and tunnel. Each level gets increasingly more difficult. Novice has three tubes on the course which include 1 tube with a rat and litter, 1 tube with litter only, and 1 tube that is empty. The dog must correctly locate the tube with the rat and demonstrate that to his handler so that the handler can “Call” the location to the judge. If the handler “calls” the incorrect tube the run is finished and the dog does not qualify. It becomes very important for the handler to understand and read how his dog alerts on the rat. Each dog can have a different style of hunting and a different manner of alerting. Some can be very subtle, while others may be very enthusiastic and direct.

87 NEWS AND NOTES, Cont.

Because the rats are hidden in the same location for five dogs in a row, the dogs and handlers that are waiting for their turn must be sequestered from seeing where the rats are hidden. This is accomplished by using what is called a “Blind”. It usually consists of a pop-up tent with sides or some other method of blocking the view to the hunt area. Because that “blind” can be close quarters for five dogs and five handlers, dogs should be able to sit quietly for a period of time in close proximity to other dogs. Generally the dogs in a specific blind will be of similar height.

Just like agility competition, dogs are not allowed to poop or pee in the ring. This is cause for being disqualified from that class/trial. Often, that is the biggest problem with novice dogs in Barn Hunt. One other interesting fact about Barn Hunt is that they allow bitches in season (BIS) to compete. They must wear their panties in the competition ring and at all times except when being exercised. My collies have competed in two trials while in season and my toy Manchester terrier has competed in one trial while in season. Barn Hunt rules state that you must notify the show committee prior to the start of the trial, that the BIS must be crated/housed away from other exhibitors, and that their crates must be marked with signage to warn other exhibitors. They are also to be exercised in an area designated by the show committee which is away from where others will be walking dogs. All “BIS” are moved to the last blind for their class and are in a blind with only other “BIS” to prevent any issues.

This is a sport that all dogs can excel at and a sport that handlers truly enjoy. It allows the dogs to use their instincts and noses to do the work that many were bred to do. Clearing a barn of vermin that would destroy the grain stored for human or animal consumption was a very important job in earlier days and work that many farm dogs still provide today. Many expect the terrier breeds to excel at Barn Hunt, but as the records show there are lots of other breeds that are quite capable of reaching the highest levels of this sport.

The has accepted this sport into the AKC title recognition program. This means that if you earn a Barn Hunt organization title, you may submit a copy of your title certificate along with the proper fees and your Barn Hunt title will be added to your official AKC record and will be listed on your dog’s title records. The United Kennel Club (UKC) is also recognizing Barn Hunt titles for a fee. Many new groups and clubs are forming around the country to hold Barn Hunt Fun Tests and Barn Hunt Trials. Some groups also offer regular training classes or seminars to help handlers learn what is required and provide a place for practice. However, as with my story above, training may not be necessary to get started in this sport. This sport is growing by leaps and bounds and they held their 2nd Annual Barn Hunt Nationals at Purina Farms in September 2015.

If you have an interest in learning more about Barn Hunt, go to the main website www.barnhunt.com where you will find registration information as well as rules and upcoming events listings. You may also want to join the Facebook page called “Barn Hunt Association, LLC” where you will find lots of photos and frequent updates from the club founder, Robin Nuttall. There are also many local and regional groups that have their own Facebook pages and websites.

I have had a blast learning about this sport and competing in it. Each of my dogs has their own style of hunting and alerting, which keeps me on my toes. I am most proud that my collies qualified at their very first trial with no specific barn hunt training beforehand . I encourage anyone that has an interest to take the time to check out a Barn Hunt event. I think you will be pleasantly surprised about how much fun you and your collie will have.

NEWS AND NOTES, Cont.

My collie girls and I are honored to have been the first dogs in Oklahoma to attain a Barn Hunt title and the first Collies anywhere to achieve the Barn Hunt Instinct, Barn Hunt Novice, and Barn Hunt Open titles. Before we took a break to focus on conformation again, we also obtained the first Collie qualifying run in Barn Hunt Senior. My collies are now: “Danica” – Group Winning – Int’l CH, U-CH, GCH Wild Wind’s Promise A Fast Finish, RN, PT, CA, RATO, CGC A and “Ryleigh” – U-CH U-ACH Wild Wind’s Promise Ewe Keep, HSAs, RA, OA, AXJ, NF, RATO, CGCA. My Toy Manchester is now: “Sabra” – UCH CH Kismet’s Barn Dance at Riverwind, NAJ, RATN. She is working to catch up with the older collies.

Special Thanks to Cheryl Roach, AMTC Newsletter Editor, for giving me the opportunity to share about this great new sport of Barn Hunt with our Manchester community. I hope to see more Manchesters in the Barn Hunt rings soon! Perhaps, we will even see Barn Hunt included for AMTC Versatility – Hall of Fame recognition sometime in the near future. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. Sincerely,

Tonya Sims Promise Collies & Riverwind Manchesters - Tulsa, OK

Member Profile - Jeannie Dalesky

Editor’s note – It occurred to me, that largely because of geography, many of our members have not ever met each other. Or they may have heard a name, but have no idea what that person looks like or anything about them. I’d like to prolife at least one member each time – and would especially like to feature those of you that have been with the club or our breed for a long time. Please feel free to submit a story and pictures please if there is someone you’d like to feature. Things to ask: Where did you get your first Manchester from? Why and how old were you? Why did you start showing or competing if you do? Why do you do keep doing what you do?

This quarter’s featured member is Jeannie Dalesky. Editor’s Note:On a personal note – My husband Rick and I have a HUGE special spot in our hearts for Jeannie – as Sweeps Judge, she gave our first toy Manchester Cricket her first (and our first) ribbon ever at the puppy sweeps at the Hampton, VA National. She then took us “newbies” under her wing for the remainder of the event – and is still teaching and encouraging us (and everyone she encounters) today – usually while we howl with laughter at her stories. Jeannie has been ill recently and I know she would appreciate hearing from everyone - her mailing address is 4225 Seaside Drive, Conway, SC 29526-4663.

Back in 1944 we were living on a farm in rural Cincinatti, Ohio and Daddy accepted a transfer to the Pittsburgh, PA area. My parents were both from that area and we had family residing there so we moved. Unfortunately mother’s father, our dear grandfather, passed away just before our move was complete. It was not so easy of a move considering we took with us pets in full. We had a pony, a goat, chickens, rabbits, fish tanks, ducks, dogs, cats, and birds so Dad got a trailer. We loaded up and it took two days to arrive at our new home. Mayflower moving was on strike, so we had no furniture for two weeks.

Dad bought a farm and so he took them there and turned them loose in their new home. We bunked with our aunt in her city home. Soon it was time for school – new school, new state, and many differences. Dad wanted to get my sister and I to feel more settled so we got new dogs. Kay got into great Danes, mom continued in Scotties. We had a yard sheltie mix, but I had no dog of my own. Pop had raised toy fox terriers and so he decided that was the type of dog for me. So he got me a toy Manchester terrier. Pete, as he was called was a great dog, but in true Manchester fashion he chose mom as his “special” person so I still had no dog. Dad tried – he bought a bitch – and she chose my sister Kay – and he got a second bitch – and she loved my Dad. When we lost Pete in an accident, we got Repete and Rip also liked mom. In 1948 we had our first litter of toy Manchesters, and since that time I have always had a Manchester with me.

I also had other many other breeds and in the 1970’s I had a Utility titled German Sheppard. I was proud of that dog and that title. The people I trained with said it was that dog and not my training, so I decided to prove it was me. I wrote to AKC to see what rare breed had not been titled in recent years, and the second on the list was the “toy” Manchester. Mom said she needed a stud dog, so I went shopping and found Tracey to add to the family. He was Pete Tres of Hidden Hill. Tracey was an oversized toy (15 pounds) and he earned his C.D., his C.D.X, and 1 leg in Utility before I gave up. He was one of the fastest participants on our scent relay team. He was used on the team to race at various competitions and shows in PA, Ohio, W VA, and Michigan.

Ruth Turner, Chattam Farms Manchesters, came to Pittsburgh to see Trace run. I had never seen a Manchester that was not a toy, and believed any toy over 12 pounds was a standard. Ruth had two true standards with her, Ch. Chatham’s Mitzie and Ch. Chatham’s Rebel and I fell in love – WOW – they were gorgeous! We talked, I was educated, and I was in complete awe of that magnificent pair of standards. Ruth

92 NEWS AND NOTES, Cont. and I talked and talked and she said she would give me a standard for co-owned obedience title. As a young housewife with two small children, I was not in a position to purchase a dog and could not believe the offer! My husband said it would never happen and a few months went by. One morning at 6 am Ruth called to say she was leaving shortly and was bringing me several pups to choose from. Late that evening, down my driveway she came! She indeed had several pups to choose from and I was so excited. I chose an older, cropped male who turned out to be 7 months old, and the son of my dream dogs Mitzie and Rebel. Thus American, Canadian, Mexican, Bermuda Champion Classy Chip of Chatham CD came into my life. Chip was first of many standards I loved, owned, and showed for some 20 years.

Ruth and I became close friends and often travelled together, planned litters together visited each other’s homes befriended families, etc. Ruth however did not care for Chip – she told me after he earned his obedience title he would not be a good breed dog (he became #1). She took him to Mexico, went with me to Canada and Bermuda – and still she did not like him. Chip brought new people into the Manchester world and will always hold a special piece of my heart.

I also kept toys in my life and showed my toys. My mother and I had many nice toys and many, many friends were made because of those dogs. I feel very fortunate to have had so many Manchesters in my life. My husband loved the “little” ones; so we owned and showed at least 10 under 7 pound animals. We did not cross breed the standards to the toys – yes we did have undersized standards and oversized toys and they became someone’s bed warmers.

My fellow Manchester breeders and friends have always been a treasure to me. The most terrible time in my life came shortly after I lost my mother. My husband was also in a rehab facility from a stroke when I failed a kennel inspection. I went to court and was finally charged with dirty papers, food and water dishes at 8:30 am before I got home from work. I was fined less than $100 including court costs and felt vindicated – imagine my shock when I received a notice from the AKC that I was convicted of abuse and neglect of my dogs and was subject to a large fine and a ten year suspension! I almost lost my mind! Then the wonderful world of Manchesters came to my rescue and in the month from the date of the notification to the date of suspension the letters and phone calls came into the AKC. Their inspectors finally came to my kennel and it all was expunged from my records – my name was cleared, no fines, and no suspensions because of the wonderful world of the Manchester people. I will always be grateful for them.

One of my toy girls was the first World Champion of the breed – she spent two years in France and later her daughter was sent over. There are still decedents of hers today. The AKC chose not to acknowledge her because they did not recognize titles from foreign countries – and there she was a 15 point champion. For 17 ½ years she was my beloved bed partners. She is buried here with many others.

Over the years I have inherited many Manchesters from older people including 12 from Ruth Turner. I have made fast friends through these delightful dogs. I have gone from being a younger member to an old one. I try and support the breed by having a supportive entry at the Myrtle Beach Kennel Club show (held this past weekend) and we have had many good times over the years. I am a mentor for the breed and work with new judges.

I no longer show Manchesters but boy the memories!!! I have shown braces, and teams and carting and obedience and therapy. I have two champion toys still living with me. I know people from all over the country because I AM a Manchester person – praise the lord! Hidden Hills is now leaving the pedigrees but it is, and will always be, the foundation of many dogs.

Thoughts we don't want to think of or talk about - but should: Speaking of Jeannie Dalesky, she brought up a good point a while back - no matter how old you are, have you thoroughly planned where your Manchesters would go if something happened to you? Who would take care of them? Do the new owners know that they will be responsible for these babies until the end of their lives?

Are their names on the Manchester's papers - or do you have transfer papers pre-signed and undated so they could assume ownership without delay? Will they have the funds to take care of your babies and know who their vet was?
