Jones ……………………………………. i Abstract This study explores the concept of identity construction through food as exhibited by Zimbabwean inbetweener migrants in the UK. Literature was explored in relation to national identity, migration, consumer culture theory, consumer acculturation, diaspora theory, memory and nostalgia and food consumption and identity. The study used a qualitative research approach to address the issues under investigation. Interviews were used to collect data based on the understanding that food patterns and identity construction are context driven. The findings indicate that the food experiences of the Zimbabwean inbetweeners were specific to this group.

The significance and importance of music is applied to all practitioners of svikwembu. SviJcwembu includes trance (spirit possession), divination, consultation (leu pahla), exorcism (kufemba) and healing practices. Music activity has different functions in each of the above-mentioned practices. Specific instruments (gocha, ngoma, ntxomana, and whistle) and styles of music (Ndau, Nguni, mahlonga and Monhe) are used and performed in these set ritual practices.

Adapula alasan penulis terkait pengambilan rentang waktu 1980-2008 karena pada masa tersebut Robert Mugabe terpilih menjadi seorang pemimpin di Zimbabwe. Namun, alasan yang paling mendasar adalah pada masa kepemimpinan Mugabe tersebut banyak terjadi peristiwa yang mempengaruhi keadaan Zimbabwe pada masa kini. Sebelum pembahasan mengenai keadaan sosial-politik di Zimbabwe pada awal kemerdekaan, penulis terlebih dahulu akan menguraikan mengenai gambaran umum keadaan geografi dan demografi di Zimbabwe itu sendiri, Karena ketika berbicara mengenai suatu kawasan, maka pemahaman aspek geografi dan demografi wilayah tersebut merupakan kebutuhan yang sangat mendasar. Aspek geografi dan demografi ini termasuk yang memiliki pengaruh yang besar pada perkembangan sejarah kawasan tersebut. 4.1.1 Kondisi geografis dan demografi Zimbabwe Zimbabwe merupakan negara yang berada di wilayah benua Afrika bagian selatan. Happyson Chauke was one of those in my life. Born and reared in a humble home near Lundi Mission in Zimbabwe, he never flaunted his royal ancestry. My wife and I spent thirty-five years as missionaries in Zimbabwe with our first assignment at Lundi Mission. Our two sons played with Happyson while learning his language. Happyson attended the local primary school and secondary school managed by the missionaries. Later on he returned to teach in 1976 at Lundi Mission. Missionaries were evacuated from the mission because of the danger in the area of the guerilla-type warfare when the Africans struggled to gain their independence. In the 1990s, while staying with Happyson’s family at their home in Harare, he told me that he had documented the events that had occurred at Lundi Mission in the four years until independence in 1980. I asked him to send me the account as well as other papers he had written. I immediately saw their high quality and sensed the importance of preserving them. Certainly they should be published for readers worldwide. That is the reason I have compiled the documents into the following book format. Which leads me to the observation I have often made of the distinctive qualities I have seen in those of royal blood. There was displayed a characteristic fineness in the life of Happyson. I saw pride accompanied by a natural humility in his relationships toward others.

  • Ndau Identity in Mozambique-Zimbabwe Borderland
    NDAU IDENTITY IN MOZAMBIQUE-ZIMBABWE BORDERLAND Marta Patrício Centro de Estudos Africanos (CEA) ISCTE-IUL – Lisbon University Institute1 [email protected] Introduction The Ndau are one of many African groups that show the division provoked by the establishment of colonial borders. The effects caused by this territorial demarcation to the definition of a transnational Ndau identity, as well as the evolutions around this identitarian feeling, specially affected by sociopolitical transformations in both countries (specially colonial wars and civil wars) are fundamental analysis elements to the update of knowledge about this ethnic group. The academic debates about ethnicity have been largely discussed in the past decades, specially the ethnicity historicity, i.e., if ethnic groups are deep-rooted in ancestral identities or if they were invented by colonialism. Jean-Loup Amselle, for instance, sustains that ethnic identities are colonial creations, that there wasn’t such thing as an ethnic group during pre-colonial ages and that ethnic identities were sculpted only by the colonizers’ will of territorialize the African continent; after that, the local populations have reappropriated these identities2. However, nowadays there is an emerging consensus about the importance of looking to ethnic identities as a process of constant transformations, adaptations and negotiations previous to colonialism (although only known in this period), more than looking for exact moments of crucial construction or rupture3. Ndau identity is deep-rooted in Monomotapa Empire, previous to the Mozambique-Zimbabwe border establishment and prior to colonialism. So the Ndau are an example of shared common social and cultural traits over several centuries, which contributed to the emergence of a sense of Ndauness.
