And this is why gay rights are human rights, and human rights are gay rights. HILLARY CLINTON MISSION Black Tie Dinner, Inc. is a nonprofit organization that raises funds for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) supportive organizations serving North Texas through a premier event of empowerment, education and entertainment in partnership with the community. 2015 BLACK TIE DINNER 11 ABOUT Since 1982, Black Tie Dinner has been the largest fund raising dinner for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community in the nation. Each year, Black Tie Dinner selects up to 20 North Texas beneficiaries as well as the national Human Rights Campaign Foundation to receive the dinner proceeds. Black Tie Dinner is committed to provide funding for many local organizations that serve the North Texas gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community. Last year’s 33rd Black Tie Dinner distributed over $1 million dollars to beneficiaries and the Human Rights Campaign Foundation, the Dinner’s national beneficiary. The amount raised comes from corporate and individual sponsorships, sale of live and silent auction items, raffle tickets and ticket sales. This million plus distribution brings the total amount distributed by Black Tie Dinner, Inc. to nearly $20 million dollars since its first year in 1982. Seen On Social Wishing you a Happy Valentines Day, and an especially memorable one to all you newlyweds! #loveislove Follow us #BTDallas2015 SCHOLARSHIPS JOHN THOMAS SCHOLARSHIP FUND Black Tie Dinner awards scholarship funds through the John Thomas Scholarship Fund to tireless and deserving volunteers in the community. The fund provides volunteers who would not otherwise be able to attend the experience of North Texas’ premier LGBT event, an evening of education, empowerment and entertainment. The scholarship fund honors the legacy of John Thomas who was an activist in the streets as well as business suites. Thomas was the first openly gay person to address the Republican National Committee and was a founding Board member of the National Gay and Lesbian Health Association. He also served on the board of the Human Rights Campaign. Thomas gave significant amounts of his time to local efforts as the first Executive Director of the Dallas AIDS Resource Center (now the Resource Center Dallas) and as an original member of the Turtle Creek Chorale. Active in 20 organizations, Thomas was also founder of many, such as the Dallas Legal Hospice. 2015 BLACK TIE DINNER 13 Marriage equality was something we dreamed of, yet never dreamed it would happen in our lifetime. To live the dream come true has been overwhelmingly powerful, but we must be ever mindful of what it took to gain this freedom, and what we must do to keep that freedom moving forward. Upon being approached by the Human Rights Campaign Fund, Jay Hollyfield agreed to organize a dinner with the help of Gene Harrington, Monte Frost and Scott Holman. The Dinner was held in Tony's Wine Cellar with a small group of interested persons in attendance. The following year a dinner was held in the Petroleum Club with a slightly largergroup present. By 1991 the founding group grew to ten with the addition of Keith McGee, Charles Armstrong, Larry Lingle, Bill White, Nancy Molleda and Frank Campisi. The Dinner was held at the Remington Hotel with two hundred twenty attending. By 1993 two more persons were added to the hosts, Phil Lacy and [anine Brunjes. The group incorporated as The Houston Black Tie Dinner, Inc., a 501(c)3 organi- zation to raise and distribute funds to both local charities and to a national bene- ficiary. The speaker was Roberta Achtenberg, the highest ranking gay member of the Clinton administration. The over $1,400,000 dollars distributed to beneficiaries from previous dinners since 1993 is a reflection of how we in the Houston and surrounding communities have responded to the call to support our community.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE PRESS CONTACT: 972-865-2239, Ext. 29 [email protected] Interviews and photographs available. BLACK TIE DINNER ANNOUNCES STELLAR LINEUP FOR NOV. 14 EVENT MARRIAGE EQUALITY PLAINTIFF TO SPEAK; TREVOR PROJECT, MELISSA GROVE TO RECEIVE HONORS; TOP-NOTCH ENTERTAINERS WILL IGNITE THE STAGE DALLAS (Aug. 6, 2015) – The plaintiff in the historic U.S. Supreme Court marriage equality case will be one of this year’s distinguished guest speaker at the 34th annual Black Tie Dinner, organizers announced this evening. The dinner gala will be held Nov. 14 at the Sheraton Dallas. The theme for this year’s dinner is “IGNITE!” In June 2013, Jim Obergefell and John Arthur decided to get married to obtain legal federal recognition of their relationship. They married in Maryland. After learning that their state of residence, Ohio, would not recognize their marriage license, they filed a lawsuit, which eventually made its way to the U.S. Supreme Court. Decided on June 26, 2015, the case required all states to issue marriage licenses to same- sex couples and to recognize same-sex marriages validly performed in other jurisdictions. The 5-4 vote legalized same-sex marriage throughout the United States. “As plaintiff in this historic case, Jim Obergefell will forever be known for standing up to protect the marriage equality of all Americans,” said Black Tie Dinner Co-chair John Lawrimore. “Obergefell is one of so, so many people in our community who ignite passion, ignite community and ignite equality.” The Black Tie Dinner Board of Directors announced other program highlights, and promised more to come.

  • The Queer" Third Species": Tragicomedy in Contemporary
The Queer “Third Species”: Tragicomedy in Contemporary LGBTQ American Literature and Television A dissertation submitted to the Graduate School of the University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department English and Comparative Literature of the College of Arts and Sciences by Lindsey Kurz, B.A., M.A. March 2018 Committee Chair: Dr. Beth Ash Committee Members: Dr. Lisa Hogeland, Dr. Deborah Meem Abstract This dissertation focuses on the recent popularity of the tragicomedy as a genre for representing queer lives in late-twentieth and twenty-first century America. I argue that the tragicomedy allows for a nuanced portrayal of queer identity because it recognizes the systemic and personal “tragedies” faced by LGBTQ people (discrimination, inadequate legal protection, familial exile, the AIDS epidemic, et cetera), but also acknowledges that even in struggle, in real life and in art, there is humor and comedy. I contend that the contemporary tragicomedy works to depart from the dominant late-nineteenth and twentieth-century trope of queer people as either tragic figures (sick, suicidal, self-loathing) or comedic relief characters by showing complex characters that experience both tragedy and comedy and are themselves both serious and humorous. Building off Verna A. Foster’s 2004 book The Name and Nature of Tragicomedy, I argue that contemporary examples of the tragicomedy share generic characteristics with tragicomedies from previous eras (most notably the Renaissance and modern period), but have also evolved in important ways to work for queer authors. The contemporary tragicomedy, as used by queer authors, mixes comedy and tragedy throughout the text but ultimately ends in “comedy” (meaning the characters survive the tragedies in the text and are optimistic for the future).

Though trans women of color, such as Laverne Cox and Janet Mock, are more visible in mainstream media than ever before, mainstream media still largely depicts trans people through white constructs of what it means to be trans, namely medicalized binary transitions.

  • Netiquette: Miss Manners for the Web
4 Netiquette: Miss Manners for the Web Welcome to the world of the new influencers. The reason the social web is sometimes called the “wild west” is that we’re still working out the kinks of how best to communicate with one another online. The rules of conduct may not be set in stone, but the social web isn’t a total free-for-all either. You should be aware of some key, often mystifying, communi- cations protocols before striking up conversations with the locals. This chapter provides some lessons Friends with Benefits (C) 2009 by Darren Barefoot and Julie Szabo on how to communicate with new influencers—bloggers, YouTube stars, Facebook friend magnets, and Digg superstars. Think of this chapter as finishing school for Internet communication. If you understand the social innuendo, you’ve got a much better chance of breaking into the inner circle and getting mentioned or reviewed by powerful online influencers who can send thousands of visitors—and potential buyers—your way. We will run through a variety of communications techniques here, but if you take one lesson from this chapter, take this: Listen first. Thankfully, nearly all new influencer communications occur in the Internet’s public forum, so you can adopt an anthropological approach. By emulating the influencers’ behavior and learning their dialect, you can be confident when you approach them. As Jane Goodall discovered, the best way to learn about a species is to live among them. So you’re going to start being active online right now. Have your computer in front of you while you read this chapter, because we’re going to put you to work.
