Upon arriving in Banshee, Pa., Sheriff Lucas Hood immediately has a chance run-in with an Amish gangster, while keeping a watchful eye out for the New York mob czar he once double- crossed. A man leaves prison with nothing but the shirt on his back. He makes his way into town, has sex with a local bartender and steals a car. He arrives in Manhattan to see an old acquaintance, a cross-dressing hair stylist named Job, and proceeds to destroy the computers in the office until Job agrees to give up an address. Leaving Job’s, the man is chased by a Ukrainian mobster who shoots at him through the New York City streets. He escapes and steals a motorcycle, riding into the town of Banshee, PA. In Banshee, he sits at a local bar and shares a drink with the bartender, a for- mer prizefighter named Sugar Bates. Two men walk into the bar looking to rob it, but Lucas Hood, the newly-arrived sheriff-to-be, has other ideas. In the ensuing altercation, the thieves and the sheriff are killed. While disposing the bodies with Sugar, the man takes a call on Lucas’s phone and decides to his assume his identity. 3 Banshee Episode Guide The new Lucas visits the home of Carrie Hopewell, the wife of the town’s district attorney, Gordon. Lucas and Carrie, whom he calls Ana, share a past from the life she had before arriving in Banshee. Lucas asks for his cut of the diamonds they stole from ”Rabbit.” She pleads with him to just leave her and her two children alone. ”I don’t get the girl, I don’t get the money,” he tells her. ”I spent 15 years thinking about this day; this is not how I pictured it.” Lucas has Job hack into law enforcement databases to verify his cover. He meets with Dan Kendall, the town’s young mayor, and is introduced to the sheriff’s deputies: Brock Lotus, who resents Lucas for getting the job he wanted; Emmett Yawners and Siobhan Kelly. While making rounds with Brock, Lucas springs to action when he sees a group of local thugs, the Moody boys, beating up a group of Amish men. Kai Proctor, the man who controls all of Banshee’s criminal enterprises and most of its legal ones, arrives and puts a halt to the fight. He forces Cole Moody to apologize to one of the Amish men, who happens to be Kai’s estranged father. Later, in Proctor’s slaughterhouse, he savagely beats Cole. Lucas robs a local pawn shop, stealing its safe and the championship belt that used to belong to Sugar. Soon after, he is sworn in as sheriff and invited to a party in his honor at Proctor’s home. Away from the gathering, he invites Carrie to open the safe he stole, but she shuts him down. After Carrie walks away, Cole Moody arrives and knocks Lucas out from behind. He drunkenly shoots through the party and takes dead aim at Kai. But before he can fire, he’s taken out by a single shot, fired by Lucas. 4 Banshee Episode Guide The Rave Season 1 Episode Number: 2 Season Episode: 2 Originally aired: Friday January 18, 2013 Writer: Jonathan Tropper, David Schickler Director: S. Lucas’ dreams are haunted by his mem- ory of Ana. He recalls their secret love affair and the last night they spent together–when they were caught stealing $10 million worth of diamonds from Mr. Rabbit. Lucas led the cops away so she could escape, landing himself in prison for 15 years. In the morning, Lucas crashes an open house that ”Carrie” is hosting as a realtor. He pulls her into a room, kisses her and tells her he loves her. She fights him off, kisses him back, punches him in the face, and tells him if he really loves her, ”You’ll leave here and never come back.” Hanson, a drug dealer who works for Kai, prepares to throw a rave in an Amish farmhouse. Deva’s friend Reed, the son of a state senator, drives her and a friend to Hanson’s where he sells them drugs and invites them to the party. Lucas returns to the sheriff’s office to find an angry Brock waiting for him. Proctor arrives and warns Lucas that the Moody boys will be after him for killing their brother Cole. Kai offers to take care of the problem, but Lucas shuts him down. That night, the mourning Moody clan holds a wake for their brother at The Forge. Kat, Cole’s widow, spots Hood eating their food and confronts him. Two of Cole’s brothers come after Lucas with their guns, but Sugar is able to defuse the situation. 5 Banshee Episode Guide An Amish elder finds out about the rave and informs the local police. Lucas recognizes the elder’s daughter, Rebecca Bowman, is the young woman he had sex with the night before, only now dressed in Amish garb.

15 Generation Kill and the New Screen Combat Magdalena Yüksel and Colleen Kennedy-Karpat No one could accuse the American cultural industries of giving the Iraq War the silent treatment. Between the 24-hour news cycle and fictionalized enter- tainment, war narratives have played a significant and evolving role in the media landscape since the declaration of war in 2003. Iraq War films, on the whole, have failed to impress audiences and critics, with notable exceptions like Kathryn Bigelow’s The Hurt Locker (2008), which won the Oscar for Best Picture, and her follow-up Zero Dark Thirty (2012), which tripled its budget in worldwide box office intake.1 Television, however, has fared better as a vehicle for profitable, war-inspired entertainment, which is perhaps best exemplified by the nine seasons of Fox’s 24 (2001–2010). Situated squarely between these two formats lies the television miniseries, combining seriality with the closed narrative of feature filmmaking to bring to the small screen— and, probably more significantly, to the DVD market—a time-limited story that cultivates a broader and deeper narrative development than a single film, yet maintains a coherent thematic and creative agenda. As a pioneer in both the miniseries format and the more nebulous category of quality television, HBO has taken fresh approaches to representing combat as it unfolds in the twenty-first century.2 These innovations build on yet also depart from the precedent set by Band of Brothers (2001), Steven Spielberg’s WWII project that established HBO’s interest in war-themed miniseries, and the subsequent companion project, The Pacific (2010).3 Stylistically, both Band of Brothers and The Pacific depict WWII combat in ways that recall Spielberg’s blockbuster Saving Private Ryan (1998).

  • A Streetcar Named Desire Opening
PRESS CONTACT: Claudie Fisher 503.445.3765 [email protected] MEDIA RELEASE A Streetcar Named Desire, Tennessee Williams’ Pulitzer Prize-winning Masterpiece, Completes Portland Center Stage’s 2015-2016 Season Previews Begin May 14 | Opening Night is May 20 | Must Close June 19 TICKETS STARTING AT $25 — ON SALE NOW April 28, 2016 – PORTLAND, OR. Tennessee Williams’ Pulitzer Prize-winning masterpiece, A Streetcar Named Desire, will begin preview performances at Portland Center Stage on May 14; open on May 20; and run through June 19 on the U.S. Bank Main Stage. PCS Artistic Director Chris Coleman will direct a cast that includes two actors from NBC’s gripping new drama Game of Silence – Demetrius Grosse and Deidrie Henry – in the roles of Stanley and Blanche. Kristen Adele and Keith Eric Chappelle will join them as Stella and Mitch; along with seven Portland actors: Bobby Bermea, Dana Millican, Gilberto Martin del Campo, Anya Pearson, David Bodin, Sofia May-Cuxim and Blake Stone. Speaking about the production after a recent rehearsal, Chris Coleman said, “I saw the movie eons ago, and of course it’s one of the most famous plays in the English language. But I had never studied it. I find the story and emotional complexity of the writing thrilling. It’s a dangerous, sexual, painful, layered dance between these fascinating characters. And the language is astounding. Hearing this story in the mouths of a group of primarily African American actors sounds at once like it was written for them, and as if you’ve never heard the story before.” Regular tickets start at $25.

  • ERS-Envisat Symposium “Looking Down to Earth in the New Millennium” FOREWORD
ERS-Envisat Symposium “Looking down to Earth in the New Millennium” FOREWORD The ESA ERS-ENVISAT Symposium entitled “Looking down to Earth in the New Millennium” was organized jointly by ESA and Chalmers University of Technology and was held at Svenska Mässan, the Swedish Exhibition & Congress Centre, in Gothenburg, Sweden from 16th to 20th October 2000. This was the fourth ERS Earth Observation symposium, following those in Cannes (1992), Hamburg (1993) and Florence (1997) and was the first ENVISAT symposium. This symposium was open to all interested parties, from scientists to operational commercial users and service providers and was attended by 540 participants from 34 different countries. Some 451 abstracts were submitted to the symposium and a Scientific Committee of 70 members composed of scientists and ESA experts supported the programme preparation. Following the themes of the ENVISAT Announcement of Opportunity the 296 oral presentations were grouped into 42 sessions. Each session was chaired by leading scientists and co-chaired by an ESA expert. In the conference exhibit area some 150 posters were displayed and 5 demonstrations were organized. The conference stands allowed some 25 companies involved in earth observation to present their work. The symposium gave participants the opportunity to review the current status of ERS science and application developments after nearly ten years of ERS data exploitation and to present the launch preparations for ENVISAT, as well as the plans for calibration and validation of the different data products that will be supplied. The ERS-ENVISAT symposium demonstrated the ERS-1 and 2 missions’ contribution to the monitoring of our environment, and the continuous development of Earth Observation (E.O.) applications.
