  • Chapter 4 the Right-Wing Media Enablers of Anti-Islam Propaganda
Chapter 4 The right-wing media enablers of anti-Islam propaganda Spreading anti-Muslim hate in America depends on a well-developed right-wing media echo chamber to amplify a few marginal voices. The think tank misinforma- tion experts and grassroots and religious-right organizations profiled in this report boast a symbiotic relationship with a loosely aligned, ideologically-akin group of right-wing blogs, magazines, radio stations, newspapers, and television news shows to spread their anti-Islam messages and myths. The media outlets, in turn, give members of this network the exposure needed to amplify their message, reach larger audiences, drive fundraising numbers, and grow their membership base. Some well-established conservative media outlets are a key part of this echo cham- ber, mixing coverage of alarmist threats posed by the mere existence of Muslims in America with other news stories. Chief among the media partners are the Fox News empire,1 the influential conservative magazine National Review and its website,2 a host of right-wing radio hosts, The Washington Times newspaper and website,3 and the Christian Broadcasting Network and website.4 They tout Frank Gaffney, David Yerushalmi, Daniel Pipes, Robert Spencer, Steven Emerson, and others as experts, and invite supposedly moderate Muslim and Arabs to endorse bigoted views. In so doing, these media organizations amplify harm- ful, anti-Muslim views to wide audiences. (See box on page 86) In this chapter we profile some of the right-wing media enablers, beginning with the websites, then hate radio, then the television outlets. The websites A network of right-wing websites and blogs are frequently the primary movers of anti-Muslim messages and myths.

  • The Sauk Language of the Sac and Fox of Oklahoma
Language Preservation with the Help of Written Language: The Sauk Language of the Sac and Fox of Oklahoma KERSTIN MULLER REINSCHMIDT University of Tucson Ta ka we na nu ta ma. Ke ne no ta we?1 The chances of coming across a tribal member who can understand these phrases are small, because the tribe's main spoken language today is English. The Sac and Fox of Oklahoma2 have not been spared by history and share the fate of native language loss along with the majority of Indian communities across North America. Writing about the Mohawk language, Mithun and Chafe (1979:8) see the value of native languages as "the clearest symbols of their Indianness", and they ask: "Is such a loss inevitable, or, given the desire, can a community do something to retard or reverse it?" In this paper, I focus on Sauk orthography. Brandt (1988:328), who shows how linguists have served as consultants for North American tribes in various contexts, notes that "A central [context] is in orthography development and in teaching people to read and write their own languages."3 Within the contemporary context of literacy, Sauk needs to be visible as well as audible. Unfortunately, there has never been any agreement about the orthography to be used. While linguistic transcriptions vary from very detailed phonetic ones to more simplified phonemic representa tions, the Sac and Fox themselves have adopted what they call a "syllabic spelling" for their language. 1 "I speak a little Sauk. Do you understand?" The spelling is adopted from the Sac and Fox Primer Book (1977).

IN THE SUPERIOR COURT OF THE STATE OF DELAWARE ) US DOMINION, INC., DOMINION ) VOTING SYSTEMS, INC., and ) DOMINION VOTING SYSTEMS ) CORPORATION, ) ) Plaintiffs, ) ) Case No. v. ) ) JURY TRIAL DEMANDED FOX NEWS NETWORK, LLC, ) ) Defendant. ) ) COMPLAINT 1. Fox, one of the most powerful media companies in the United States, gave life to a manufactured storyline about election fraud that cast a then-little- known voting machine company called Dominion as the villain. After the November 3, 2020 Presidential Election, viewers began fleeing Fox in favor of media outlets endorsing the lie that massive fraud caused President Trump to lose the election. They saw Fox as insufficiently supportive of President Trump, including because Fox was the first network to declare that President Trump lost Arizona. So Fox set out to lure viewers back—including President Trump himself— by intentionally and falsely blaming Dominion for President Trump’s loss by rigging the election. 1 2. Fox endorsed, repeated, and broadcast a series of verifiably false yet devastating lies about Dominion. These outlandish, defamatory, and far-fetched fictions included Fox falsely claiming that: (1) Dominion committed election fraud by rigging the 2020 Presidential Election; (2) Dominion’s software and algorithms manipulated vote counts in the 2020 Presidential Election; (3) Dominion is owned by a company founded in Venezuela to rig elections for the dictator Hugo Chávez; and (4) Dominion paid kickbacks to government officials who used its machines in the 2020 Presidential Election. 3. Fox recklessly disregarded the truth. Indeed, Fox knew these statements about Dominion were lies. Specifically, Fox knew the vote tallies from Dominion machines could easily be confirmed by independent audits and hand recounts of paper ballots, as has been done repeatedly since the election.

The distributor lost 105K residential video customers in 4Q19, nearly triple the 36K it lost in the quarter a year ago. CFO Chris Winfrey isn’t worried, stating during the company’s Q4 earnings call Friday that lower gross video adds are “more a function of the marketplace than anything else.” He added that Charter still believes in video as an attractive piece to its connectiv- ity play, and “we continue to invest in it, both in a traditional set-top box sense as well as all our IP platforms.” Charter already offers services like Netflix on its platform, and CEO Tom Rutledge said the company is looking into working with upcoming streaming video services like WarnerMedia’s HBO Max and NBCU’s Peacock. “There’s an opportunity in us marketing direct-to-consumer products in our relationships with programmers,” Rutledge said. Don’t expect the traditional cable bundle model to go anywhere, however. “We can hold both thoughts in our head at the same time,” he said, explain- ing that Charter will sell bundled products for years to come, but also offer DTC options. Rutledge pointed to Comcast’s Flex as a model for packaging DTC products. “We have an opportunity to create and help programmers sell their con- tent and do that in a way that’s mutually beneficial to both of us,” he said.
