Later, spend an enchanting evening at sea as a cruise ship whisks you away to Helsinki, Finland’s capital. Take full advantage of the on-board amenities such as cafes, restaurants and shops. Spend the night in one of the ship’s cabins. Attractions: Stockholm DAY 3 DAY 3: SAIL INTO HELSINKI Enjoy breakfast with a view as you sail through Finland’s beautiful Archipelago. Attractions: Helsinki DAY 5 DAY 5: BY FERRY TO ESTONIA Head to the ferry terminal in Helsinki early in the morning for a 2-hour ferry ride to Tallinn, the capital of Estonia. After checking in at your centrally-located hotel, you can explore this beautiful medieval city as you wish. Take a walk from the Upper Town (Toompea) and visit such sights as the Orthodox St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, the ancient limestone walls of the medieval Toompea Castle or the Toompea Palace, the current seat of the Estonian Parliament. For dinner, you will find many nice restaurants in the Old Town (Vanalinn). Spend the night in Tallinn.     Andres Tvauri LATE MEDIEVAL HYPO CAUSTS WITH HEAT STORAGE IN ESTONIA INTRODUCTION As often happens with archaeologists, the stimulus for writing this article was a discovery unexpectedly brought to light from under the ground. In autumn 2007, I had the opportunity to study a large medieval heat storage furnace (Figs. 1 and 2) constituting the central part of the hot air heating system, or hypo caust, of a former grooms’ building. It was unexpectedly unearthed in the course of construction work in the outer bailey of the medieval Order Castle of Viljandi.1 The furnace found in the Viljandi Castle was a nice but, in the context of Estonian medieval fi nds, rather ordinary discovery. In Old Livonia, roughly corresponding to the territory of present-day Estonia and Latvia, hot air heating systems in which the core was a furnace fi lled with large stones, making it possible to store heat and rid oneself of the need to con- stantly heat the furnace or the fi replace, was used in the 13th to the 16th centuries before the introduction of Dutch tile stoves in castles, monas- teries and in residential and public buildings in towns. Starting in the 1930s, such furnaces, or their archaeologically studied remains, have been found in numerous medieval buildings in Estonia. The furnace found in Viljandi induced me to look for literature about hypo causts with heat storage. With the assistance of my colleague Erki Russow, the most thorough paper on medieval hot air heating systems ever written soon landed on my desk – a thesis published by the Ger- man researcher Klaus Bingenheimer in 1998, Die Luftheizungen des Mittelalters.

    Lilian Hansar HELMI ÜPRUS AND THE OLD TOWN OF TALLINN The current paper focuses on the establishment of the protection zone in the old town of Tallinn. The leading researcher of the previous compre- hensive work in the 1950s and 1960s was Helmi Üprus1. The contribution of the prominent art historian in the international arena, as well as in the context of today’s local national heritage, has not received the recogni- tion it deserves. The role of Helmi Üprus, one of the most outstanding and versatile 20th century Estonian art historians, has been especially crucial in initiating several new research trends. One example is the complex study of the historical centre of Tallinn, which led to state pro- tection of the old town in 1966. Various authors have written on Üprus’s contribution to protecting the Tallinn old town,2 but the considerable volume of her research in urban construction requires a much more thorough introduction.
