(1896-1987) George Thalben-Ball Voor de Hagenees spreekt het voor zich dat je als Charles Villiers Stanford (1852-1924) organist keihard werkt en naar perfectie streeft. Al meer dan 25 jaar is Van Oosten bezig met de Franse Percy Whitlock (1903-1946) muziek. Het ene na het andere cd-project werkte hij William Thomas Best (1826-1897) af. Eerst alle orgelwerken van Louis Vierne. Vervolgens alle acht orgelsonates van Alexandre Edwin Henry Lemare (1865-1934) Guilmant. Toen Charles-Marie Widor compleet. En Edward Elgar (1857-1934) tien jaar was hij bezig met het hele orgeloeuvre van A Festival of English Organ Music Vol.1 Marcel Dupré. Vorig jaar verscheen als drie-cd set het programma met Saint-Saëns. Met deze tweede cd completeert het Utrecht String eerder verscheen: Quartet de integrale opnamen van de Complete String Quartets Vol.1 strijkkwartetten van Tsjaikovski. De cd MDG 9031575-6 (1SACD-Hybride) € 22,95 werd vorig jaar nog in de Utrechtse Dom aangeboden aan Maarten van Rossem. De bewerking voor strijkkwartet van Tsjaikovski’s Kinderalbum is van de hand van Rostislav Dubinsky, bekend van het Borodin Kwartet. De cd wordt aangevuld met het Derde Strijkkwartet, waarmee Utrecht String Quartet dan meteen haar cyclus met het volledige strijkkwartet- oeuvre van Tsjaikovski afsluit. Het eerste volume met de eerste twee strijkkwartetten werd zeer positief ontvangen in de vakpers: The Strand schreef dat “the long-established Utrecht players are in every way outstanding" en Gramophone sprak van "a top-class modern recording." Naast een uitgebreide concertpraktijk Op pedagogisch vlak is het kwartet houdt het USQ zich ook bezig met verantwoordelijk voor de kamermuziek- opnamen voor radio, televisie en cd. Na de zevenjarige oorlog wilde Carl Philip Emanuel Bach weg uit Berlijn, mede omdat de koning zijn belangstelling voor muziek begon te verliezen. In 1768 werd hij muziekleider aan de Hamburgse kerken (dit ambt was vrijgekomen door de dood van Georg Philipp Telemann), en vanaf toen wijdde hij zich volledig aan het schrijven van kamermuziek en optredens als klaviersolist. In Hamburg ontstonden ook zijn andere symfonieën, waaronder 6 symfonieën voor strijkers en basso continuo.     BEN VAN OOSTEN DUDELANGE MARDI 15.10 Ben van Oosten beschäftigte sich eingehend mit der symphonischen französischen Orgel- ÉGLISE SAINT-MARTIN 20H15 musik. Seine Gesamteinspielungen der Orgelwerke von César Franck, Camille Saint-Saëns, Alexandre Guilmant, Louis Vierne, Charles-Marie Widor und Marcel Dupré wurden mit mehreren internationalen Schallplattenpreisen ausgezeichnet (u.a. Echo Klassik, Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik, Choc du Monde de la Musique und Diapason d’Or). Wegen Récital d’orgue par seiner Verdienste um die französische Orgelkultur erhielt Ben van Oosten 1980, 1987 und 1998 ehrenvolle Auszeichnungen durch die Société Académique Arts, Sciences, Lettres in Paris. Die französische Regierung erhob ihn in den Rang des Chevalier (1998) und Officier Ben van Oosten (2011) dans l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. This year's edition has a distinct RASL*) -flavor, as the theme is ‘Social engagement and the Arts.’ As the ‘traditional’ jobs in the arts are under increased pressure, and our society is faced by seemingly insurmountable problems, like climate change and pollution, but also social disintegration and loneliness, many artists feel the need to reposition themselves and look for ways to contribute.     Pearls and rarities of the Welte organ roll collection by David Rumsey Hofner, Diebold, Philipp and the world’s earliest recorded organists The earliest-born of all Welte’s organists seem to have been Carl Hofner and Johann Diebold. Judging by the catalogue numbers Franz Philipp, born half a century later, was possibly the first organist ever to record while still a student (see later). The honour of being first might also have been bestowed on one or two other now-obscure identities, e.g. A. Maenner or “Frey”. However, Hofner and Diebold had at least 5 known rolls rolls released by 1912, Philipp only one (Salvator Rosa’s Canzonetta:Nah und fern on W474). Maenner’s only known dated release is 1922 which is also about when Philipp’s main output of rolls started to appear. Some of these early rolls might have been played in Turin at the 1911 exhibition which ran from April to October, since the advertizing expressly stated: “Philharmonie- Orgel mit Künstlerrollen” (Philharmonic Organ with artist-recorded rolls)1.     Cultivating the Arts Page 263 CHAPTER 6 - THE MUSICAL MINISTRY OF LILIAN FROST, PITT STREET CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH ORGANIST, 1895-1949 Lilian Frost, Pitt Street Congregational Church organist from 1895 to 1949, died on 22 December 1953. Just over a year later, the Congregational Union of New South Wales pointed to the difficulty in acquiring quality organists to conduct 'public worship'. It discussed the importance of the role of the organist describing, in non-conformist manner, such instrumentalists as 'Ministers] of the Gospel'. During the latter half of Lilian Frost's outstanding musical service to the Church repeated references were made to her musical ministry. Both within and without the walls of the church she attracted a following. Conversely, she devoted much time and energy to the respective causes of both the secular and religious musical communities. Simultaneously seeking recognition as both a performer and minister, moving between the sacred and secular, from quiet Edwardian 'lady' to determined professional Lilian Frost's actions reveal a responsiveness to the forces of change that tie her story to those of other female cultural agents. The work of a variety of writers concerned with religious history, music history, cultural history and general Australian history reveal that a connection existed between women, music and conservative values. An Australian tendency to cling to nineteenth century British views of '[mjusic's social role', implied that through the promotion of 'high-art music' Australian women could act as guardians of both cultural values and national morality. Alternately, because music was linked to notions of cultivation and civilisation, religious observance, and conservative values, it was respectable and consequently suitable as a womanly occupation.
